  1. My soon to be 6th grader is a very advanced reader and writer. We haven't used a formal writing program beyond her Language Arts program and she is writing a new "book" every time I turn around. I'd like to give her some creative writing assignments a.s.a.p. that are challenging and more focused. I welcome any topics and assignments you might suggest. Also what writing programs and websites do you reccommend for a voracious writer? Thank you!
  2. My oldest is applying for a first Discover Card and they are asking for identity documents like social security card to be photocopied and uploaded. Are companies like Visa doing this now too? I never had to to this and it makes me uncomfy. What say the Hive? Thanks.
  3. Has anyone seen this movie? The trailer and reviews look good for kids. On Vidangel though, for items one can filter out, it mentions "needles being put in a boy" and "needles in a women's face." I imagine this is acupuncture bc the movie also takes place in Tokyo. Wondered if this scene is ok for kids in the 9-10 age range? Thanks!
  4. MerryAtHope, we want freshman to have their own card. Our local bank may be a good source as they know us. While we really didn't want a card connected to ours, I can see it might be important, say with auto repairs or some large unforeseen expense.
  5. What's a good credit card to start our freshman with? We want our freshman to have a very low limit and use it infrequently. Point accumulation would be nice. Anything else we should be considering? Thank you!
  6. Letters from Dordt admissions which were overly aggressive and a bit tone deaf.
  7. Lost in Austen looks "dandy!" Now I need to figure out how to find it.
  8. We are watching a movie that I'm enjoying so much! It's Kate and Leopold. It's so refreshing bc it's witty, funny and so far there's not much in the way of sexual objectification of women. I'd love to find more movies like this that are comedies or romantic comedies which don't insult one's intelligence. Any reccs? Also are there any websites that help you find a movie "like" one you already love? I looked up this movie on Amazon to see other reccs it suggested to buy and they weren't close at all. Thank you!
  9. Yes! It was a free sample of Hoola that made me discover bronzers. My sample is a creamy liquid. I'll see if it comes in other forms.
  10. I just discovered bronzers and I like that they are more natural looking now. What is your fav facial bronzer that is a loose powder or pressed compact so it can be dusted on? Also it has to be non-comedogenic. Thanks! 😊
  11. Butter so sorry that Ani had that experience. I'm glad things are better now for her. JanetC we have the same situation here. There are just not a lot of teen homeschoolers around here and our kids are very athletic and into their sports, where the homeschooling teens that do exist are very much into the drama productions.
  12. Going to watch Glory Road tonight. It looks perfect for us. Thank you!
  13. If you exclusively homeschooled up through middle school and then switched to have your kids enroll in public school for high school, can you share why you did so and how that experience went or how it is going? Thank you
  14. Ok we're not worried about too many outside commitments for the band and practices outside of normal class time. Sorry if I wasn't clear. H was just hoping that there was a chance at being in the band and not merely going to class and practicing with them and then the band performs with almost everyone but a couple of kids. I really think based on the size of our community and how things work here, H will have a good chance to perform with the band. They definitely do community and school performances here. And I will ask and confirm when H has practice sessions with the director over the summer. My impression is that H who is a bit behind bc of no formal training, will still get that chance provided H works hard to get up to speed. Thanks everyone.
  15. Thanks all. I don't need a definitive answer yet. Just hoping he had a shot at being in the band and not just the class. Looks like he has a definite shot at it.
  16. I have no experience with school bands, especially p.s. bands. One of our kids is hoping to take band at our local public middle school as a supplement to home education. H met with the director for an evaluation and played an instrument for a bit and talked about reading music. The director said H is good to be in the band class. My question is are all the kids IN the band class also IN the band or is this not always the case? I'm thinking probably yes, bc this is small school and only 7th grade, so it doesn't seem super competitive yet, but I don't want to assume that. Thank you!
  17. Can you recommend any clean comedy movies that center on a college theme?
  18. I'd send her along with a really good blender like a blendtec, so she can make quick veggie smoothies on the go, say with count or almond milk if that's preferable to dairy.
  19. I'm fine with the diploma part. It's the adopting J's transcript as the public school one that seems strange and disingenuous.
  20. That's what I was thinking. J's college entrance exam scores were higher than the p.s. students too and maybe that helps the school.
  21. Please don't quote this post. Oldest child J, is about to graduate in a couple of weeks. J was homeschooled for the entire education, until last year and half where J dual enrolled in local public school and took junior college classes through the h.s. as well as core and elective courses. J continued a couple homeschool courses during this time. J has aced every course there with the highest gpa in the school. J will be attending a homeschool grad ceremony commemorating all the years of homeschooling and the public school one as well. The school seems to be offering to adopt J's homeschool transcript into the public school transcript record and offer a full public school diploma at the grad ceremony. If this was offered to your child would your encourage taking this? Why or why not? Btw, J is admitted at the college of J's choice for the fall. College has seen the public school and homeschool transcripts separately, Thank you!! X posted at high school forum
