  1. Saxon 1. I've read that Saxon k-3 get bad reviews, but we are LOVING Saxon 1. My k'ner especially loves it. He keeps saying "I am LEARNING math!!" lol I love a living math approach and we incorporate some of that into our day, but he is digging that Saxon 1!! I like the script. I don't *follow* it but use it for an idea of what to say. Love the worksheets. Love it all!! Also I guess I should say my oldest son is also using Saxon and love it as well!!
  2. I started my k'ner with Saxon 1 and he is doing well. I purchased Saxon K and haven't really used it that much. Mostly I just look through it for fun math ideas but might use it more with my 3 yr old next year.
  3. Thanks for the replies!! My husband really wants to encourage both for the reasons you all listed (plus he is thinking future baseball....:tongue_smilie:). I'll just let him use whichever he chooses. I wish I could use both! I had forgotten until just now that I have a grandfather who is ambidextrous. My mom will love telling him about my k'ner. Thanks again!!
  4. I just noticed that my k'ner was using his left hand to do some handwriting practice. He did really well with it! However after he put his pencil down, I moved it to the top of his paper and then asked him to write his name on his paper. He grabbed it with his right and actually wrote neater with that hand. Should I encourage him to use whichever he prefers at the time or have him use the same hand each time? And if I have him use the same hand, which? Everyone in our family except my mil and another relative are right-handed. Just to add to my confusion, he can bat either way...it only depends on which hand reaches the bat first. I did have him bat right-handed (I was the coach) because he hit better/farther on the right. Also my 3 yr old can use both hands for different situations as well, but I think he prefers his left. So what do you think? Right, left, or both?
  5. Here are some fun printable math file folder games for kindergarten, and here are some first grade math ff games. We love them!! If you want to print some worksheets, here and here are a good places for that. If you want some living math books, here is a website with a list. If you want a complete curriculum for free, MEP is awesome but very teacher-intensive!
  6. This is probably what I would have said too. I have family who say things like that, not because they are trying to be hateful. Mostly I think they really don't know what to say so they *try* to be funny or clever and in reality it just looks mean or foolish.
  7. Thank you all so much!! =) It was a big hit!! She and her parents LOVED it!! No, I didn't get a chance to save the files before they were deleted. I plan on making it again though. I've had a request from a friend. :D
  8. We love these websites here as well. Also a couple more: http://www.filefolderfun.com http://www.walkingbytheway.com http://daniellesplace.com I have a bunch of different links and ideas on my blog too.
  9. I made a custom lapbook for my stepson's daughter!! I LOVE how it turned out!! Unfortunately I deleted the files on accident after I printed them. :tongue_smilie: Sooooo mad at myself, but at least she'll have her very own unique lapbook!!! I posted pictures of it on my blog!!! Tell me what you think!
  10. My oldest son had a journal when he was in public school for a couple grades. He loves reading it and seeing what things he thought about back then. For that reason (and because I'm a HUGE scrapbooker and into documenting the boys' lives), I have them journal. They really like it anyway. I found this website for journal prompts if they need help. Theirs are just a place to put their own thoughts and ideas. I don't require any kind of grammar or structure because I want them to be creative with it. There is no educational purpose for it...just a fun activity. My k'ner usually draws a picture and tells me what to write for him. My 11 yr old does his own. I just use regular notebooks for their journals. They can decorate it however they choose.
  11. My 6th grader is doing 5 and I have had similar issues. His grammar experience before was public school and amounts to less than nothing. :tongue_smilie: I had him start a section in his binder specifically for definitions and all those hints surrounded by stars in the book. That is the first thing he writes in his binder. It only takes a few minutes to review each day. When he has a definition down, he gets to check it off the list and we don't do daily review of that definition anymore. We go to weekly and then monthly review. This works for handwriting practice too because I don't accept it unless I can easily read it myself. :D We also had (and still have occasionally) problems with numbering a page. I put a blank sheet of paper in the front of the English section of his LA binder. When I check a lesson at night, I write the lesson number on the that front paper. If he needs to redo work or whatever, I write it next to the number. If he did it right, he gets my initial or smiley or sticker.... If he didn't number his lesson, he gets a ? next to the number. I won't go on a hunt for a page and he doesn't get credit for completing the lesson until I see it.
  12. I always insisted as a young child that I would be either a nurse or teacher, and a mom with at least three kids. During high school years, I thought about physical therapy or peds doctor but still in the medical field. I changed my major from pt to early childhood ed after working at the hospital as a nursing assistant and volunteering at a pt clinic (found out I cannot stand blood in large amounts, burns, or really any serious medical condition!). Now I homeschool four boys!!!! :D
  13. I just remembered one that we TRY to correct every.time.we.hear.it. (because usually it's in public) Ds3 says "Star Whores, the Clone Whores." My dh's oldest son is a HUGE SW fan and all of my boys LOVE talking SW with him. Anytime we are in a store now, ds3 will say "look there's....." :blushing:
  14.:lol::lol::lol: Sounds like my ds3. He is always making up names for things he doesn't know.
  15. Ds 3 asks me to "spill" him some juice, milk, etc in a cup instead of pour. I LOVE it and do not correct him! Same ds LOVES taking baths, but does not like to "take a rain." Ds 5 says "kaprise" instead of surprise. We have corrected him here but he still says "kaprise."
  16. Any current free shipping coupon codes? Thanks!
  17. This is for everyone!! I like it for the reason you stated--keep me on track, and I love reading our past weeks to see what we have accomplished. I also LOVE reading others' weeks!! Please share your week too!!
  18. I did make some and use to teach. I made a colors lapbook from various resources online and then used it with my little ones and I make holiday lapbooks ahead of time and then help them work through them.
  19. We love ETC as well!! My k'ner wants to do page after page after page!!!
