  1. Is this the Osborne one? http://www.amazon.com/Tales-Odyssey-One-Eyed-Giant-Book/dp/0786809280/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1200936314&sr=8-1 I hadn't heard of it before, but it sounds like it might be a little better text-wise. Even the cover pic is kind of scary, though. Hopefully I'll get to B&N this week to take a look. Thanks for the info!
  2. I don't think against any law, but certainly against most theatres' policies. I agree about the prices - we took the kids a week ago, and had free popcorn coupons, but for just a frozen drink and a soft drink (both small), it was $7!
  3. The girls got a "biblical garden" and "sensory garden" from grandma for Christmas, so we planted them about a week ago in their windows. They've sprouted well, we'll see how they grow. Now I have to remember to open their blinds each morning so the gardens get some light!
  4. I don't think you can - it just all goes into the original thread, but you can "quote" so someone knows exactly what you're answering. HTH!
  5. I get a lot of ideas from this site: http://www.theholidayzone.com/main.html
  6. You're right, I wasn't going to attempt the original just yet.... Most of the retellings, though, are illustrated, and it seems like the visual is going to be that much more scary for her (just her personality). Thanks, everyone, for the reassurance - I think maybe we'll just have to hit this one on the next cycle through history.
  7. We used some lessons from this unit study: http://www.easyfunschool.com/article2273.html and http://www.learningpage.com has great (free) printables. We did a month or so last summer, and K is already asking when we can study dinosaurs again!
  8. K is VERY sensitive, so I'm thinking the monsters & such will scare her. This is the child who jumped into my lap to hide when Curious George fell overboard in the movie. OTOH, this story is such a big part of Greek lit, I'd hate to skip it altogether. We did read Black Ships Before Troy about a year ago, and that didn't bother her much, but much less "supernatural" in that story. Any thoughts? Thanks!
  9. Go to your profile and you can find a link to everything you've posted here. HTH!
  10. I voted 68 because that's the usual temp, but it goes down to 64 at night.
  11. We've used projects from this book: http://www.amazon.com/Sewing-Fun-Kids-Patchwork-Gifts/dp/1571204105/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1200876549&sr=8-1 It's called Sewing Fun For Kids, and there's a machine sewing version also. It has a great introduction section and fun paper sewing projects to practice before you move into cloth.
  12. We did the subscription thing last year. It's about $20 for 2 sets ($26 for one, no idea why), and each month you get a packet with 4 "issues" - mini-magazines, 4 pages each, plus a teacher's guide and for early elementary a giant size copy. I liked it, but had so many troubles with getting the right number of copies and complete sets for the month, that I cancelled last October instead of continuing for this "schoolyear." They run Sept-May, so subscribing now isn't going to get you much when you add in the 8 week processing time. As for their workbooks/reproducibles, I haven't been impressed. You can get some printables online each month for free, from both Weekly Reader and Scholastic News, and that's been plenty for us because most of it is WAY too easy for the grade level they assign. The teachers stores around here usually have some of the workbooks, or sometimes you can find them on ebay, so I'd go that way instead of buying sight unseen.
  13. On the list of thread names, the far left between the envelopes and the name of the thread. I thought more of downward arrow or chevron, but it's kind of like a check mark too. HTH!
  14. I really like it - it's like a bouquet of books, and who wouldn't want that? I especially like the "reflection" part.
  15. That goes for talking and reading, too.... ;) Once they can talk, you get backtalk, and once they can read you have no more secrets! I have 3 & 5yo dd's, the 5yo definitely accelerated and the 3yo looks like she may be also but has speech issues so it's hard to tell what's in there just yet. This is one of the main reasons we're homeschooling - I was lucky enough to attend an elementary school with a gifted program, but it was only one day a week and I was SO bored with the other 4. I don't want to do that to dc and the outschools here (public, private or charter) don't offer much in that direction.
  16. It WAS pretty entertaining sometimes, but now I don't have to wait until the kids are out of the room before visiting! ;)
  17. There's one called "flip 4" that uses add/subtract/multiply to play like tic tac toe. It's kind of expensive (around $20 I think) so I made my own. I have a friend who sells Discovery Toys, and right now they have two on clearance for under $7. I can't remember their names (I don't have the catalog here) but I bet you could find them on the website or if you have a local consultant. One is an egyptian pyramid theme, with multiplication, so will be perfect in a couple of weeks as we progress through that part of SOTW.
  18. What a great resource! I just use a weekly grid from Donna Young's page, but it's nice to see everyone's work. Is there a way to make this a "sticky" thread so it's always at the top?
  19. I've heard that once you get past 10 posts you change titles. I don't know about the pic in your signature.
  20. I'm halfway through These Three Remain by Pamela Aidan (another P&P takeoff). It's pretty good so far - different perspective on the story I know so well.... On my Cheerios box, I noticed this morning, they say 'by the time you finish that novel you can lower your cholesterol' - it's a 6-week program - does anyone really take six weeks to finish a novel?
  21. Well, obviously I'm not the career type... but we really liked The Baby Whisperer. There's one specifically for toddlers but starts at 8 months, so that might be better than a "first year" focus. They have a great message board too, though I blame those ladies for my current internet habit. ;)
