  1. My dh and I are going to talk to her along side her dh, we aren't going to light torches and carry pitch forks to her house . I think she needs to know our boundries, she crossed over one of them. I don't see anything wrong with letting her know that. If she is a true friend, she will understand that what she did was offensive to us.
  2. She approached me during our assembly time. I was busy passing out papers and collecting money, it was basically a "hey I wanted to let you know..." I had no time to really chat with her about it. Why is it shocking that dds father (my dh) wants to talk to with her? He has a right to talk to anyone that is teaching his child let alone someone who opts to say/use the f word no matter how it was meant no? Quite frankly I am shocked that you are shocked ;)
  3. Aha, semantics. Here is Merriam Websters definition of Used 1 archaic : accustom, habituate 2 to put into action or service : avail oneself of : employ 3 to consume or take (as liquor or drugs) regularly 4 to carry out a purpose or action by means of : utilize; also : manipulate 2b <used him selfishly> #4. I believe the teacher used the f word to carry out a purpose, that purpose being to correct my child. I am of the belief that the teacher could have corrected her without using the f word.
  4. The phrase "what in the world" went to "what the world" to "what the" In our house Grammarland has a little place in it called the Grammarslums :D
  5. It's okay that you don't understand my perspective. I do not feel I need to defend something that I feel is a parental issue. On a side note the teacher never said "this could be taken by others AS the f word". She said it IS using the f word. It's a moot point to me anyway, she used a curse word. I don't think it was appropriate.
  6. Wow, there are so many replies that I don't know where to start. I will add that the teacher/friend pulled me aside in the sanctuary and told me her version of the story (and she did drop the f word in the sanctuary). She said she was telling me this so dd wouldn't get things mixed up about what really happened? Okay fine, dd and her story match up pretty well. I'm not upset that she corrected dd, if my children are offensive by all means correct them and let me know so that we can work on it. I just abhore they way she did it. It's the use of the f word that upsets me. We don't use it. I know my kids have heard the word, we have family members that use it as nouns, verbs, adverbs and sometimes pronouns ;) We don't live in a bubble, but I dont think it's too much to ask that her teacher refrain from using curse words. I Anyway, my dh and I are going to talk with her. Hopefully dd will know better to say it in front of folks and the teacher/friend will not say curse words at/to/infront of my children. I do wonder though if this were a public school teacher what the reaction would be. My sister is a public school teacher and she told me that she could be fired by saying such a thing to a student. Maybe it's just her district  I did enjoy reading everyone's perspective and had to chuckle at some and scratch my head at others. ;)
  7. Ouch, just because you believe it means wtf doesn't mean we all do. Did you read my post? I said that I realize now what it could mean and that I was going to put a stop to the use. And giving me a hug while you saying this is patronizing. My mind doesn't fly right to the gutter everytime some one says "what the..." How could I possibly know how folks are going to interpret what my children or I are going to say?
  8. We had our first day of co-op yesterday and during break a mom takes the kids outside for some leg stretching. During the course of their play my dd (11) uses the phrase "What the?" in our household it is short "what in the world?" I see now after yesterdays incident that it could be misconstrued for something vulgar. I will be stopping my children from saying it. Anyhow, the teacher who is also my friend took dd aside and asked her if she knew what that meant. Dd does not like confrontation and immediately felt threatened by this woman so she clammed up. The teacher tells her "It means, what the f---, so don't use it around me" My dd of course was embarrassed and horrified that an adult used that kind of language around her. She had no idea that it could mean that. What would you say to this woman or would you just let it slide? Not a good start for our first day of co-op.
  9. You may also want to have her looked at by an ENT (ear nose and throat) specialist. My dd had to have her tonsils and adnoids removed. This cured her apnea and everything that went with it.
  10. Dropping in this thread to say that we have used you and your mothers products since the begining of our homeschooling journery 6 years ago. My youngest will be the last to use FLL this year. It's bittersweet because I have had that book since 2003. Every year I re read TWTM and I always learn something new. You have been such and encouragement to me. Thank you for all your hard work. :-)
  11. Thanks ladies, I will tell my cousin to check with her district. I knew someone here would know :)
  12. Hi guys, My cousin lives in Ohio. Her step daughter is going into the 11 grade. She does not want to attend the local high school anymore, instead she wants to homeschool while attending the local public tech school. She wants to take the cosmotology course but not the math, english etc. at the school. I live in another state and am not familiar with their homeschool laws. I have a feeling that the public school won't allow that but I have no hard evidence. If she is not allowed could she attend the local private beauty school while homeschooling for her high school credits? I've done some googling but haven't found any answers. Hope someone can shed some light on this. Thanks for reading.
  13. Today was our first day back. We started around 9:30 had a 45 minute lunch and finished at 3:00. It was good for a first day. Now it's mommy time. Yay!
  14. I'm right there with ya, I am having a really hard time with this.
  15. Thanks for your replies ladies. I'm a tad embarrassed that I typed our instead of hour doh! :blushing: Anywhoo, I guess the consensus is that a 7 hour co-op would be an extremely long day especially for my boys who are in 3rd and 2nd grade. I am gonna talk to the director and see if I can opt out of the second half. I don't think she'll let me though because the bible class is mandatory. Another sticky point with me. Ugg what to do what to do. lol
  16. The co-op will be combining 1st thru 6th grades. Everyone taking the same classes. They are science, art, bible, writing, latin, drama.
  17. I have a friend who is starting up a new co-op in our area. She is plannning on 6 one hour classes with a one hour lunch in the middle of them. Do you think this is to much? I think it is but would like the opinion of the hive. What say you? :bigear:
  18. Here is a link I found http://www.massresources.org/food-pantries.html I hope this helps you.
  19. Last year was my first year filing and it was fabulous! I loved having the lessons for the entire year ready at our fingers tips. The year before I tried the workbox, that was okay, but I did not like that I had to set up the boxes everyday.
  20. Sorry but being embarrassed ranks very low on my radar. I guess because I have a daughter and she has seen everything God gave my boys that it's not a big deal to me. You can of course complain to the swim teachers and make them enforce their rule. In doing so you may also put another child in danger. More than likely the boys will be okay but I personally would not take that chance. My advice would be to either wait until the boys came out or talk with the offending mom and explain your position, ask them not to come in until you dd has showered and left. Most people do not like offending others and she will more than likely agree to wait while your dd is showering. I am editing to add that I think my post may come across as harsh. I am not trying to be, I do agree that the boys should have shorts on and I do not think your dd should be embarassed in women's locker room. Now if it were a 13 year old boy in there I would have a totally different view. But really they are just 7, they hardly know what their "parts" or for. ;)
  21. Since you asked for opinions I will give you mine. I was/am one of those moms that brought their 5 and 7 year old boys into the ladies showers. There was no way I was going to send them in to fend for themselves. No way. I was taken advantage of when I was young by a man near the pool. Those memories are still fresh in my mind. I will not let that happen to my kids if I can help it. You never know the same thing may have happened to this mom or her kids or someone she knew. If it matters, I did have my boys shower with their shorts on and they changed in the toilet stalls. If your daughter is embarrassed maybe she could do the same thing, shower with her suit on and change in the bathroom stalls. Or ask the "offending" mom to do the same. Or maybe you can wait until they leave I also agree with several pp that a family shower should be made available. If they are going to have those types of rules they should also provide an alternate for folks who cannot abide by those rules. Also the comment that the family should go home and change is ridiculous. You cannot assume that every family goes directly home after swim lessons or piano lessons or karate etc... you get my point. When we took our lessons last year it was a an hour away. I would plan to get all of my errands ran after the lessons. It may not be possible for some parents to go home, shower and go back out on the road.
