May move to Ohio, any advice, tips etc
classics4us posted a topic in Parents' Forum Networking Board
We are considering moving to Ohio, probably the Mansfield/Ashland area. We are comiing from Chattanooga Tn which has a wonderful homeschool community, www.csthea.org to give you a sample, I would like to know what my options are in this area. I've searched on google and seems that most communities are either north or south of this area. Any info is appreicated. -
A little back story, ds, likes to play pc games but has trouble spelling passwords, game names etc... We use SWR. This is our first year using it. I believe it has done a great job of helping my dc to read, but it's not done very much in the spelling department. Should I keep chugging along with SWR and hope that spelling will finally click for him? Or should I use something else for spelling.

Shurley Method vs Shurley Homeschool
classics4us replied to classics4us's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Thank you! That is exactly what I needed to know. How long would you say the lessons take each day? I have used FFL 1-3 and love that the lessons are short and sweet. I am considering switching to Shurley for a couple of reasons. 1). We are joining a co-op that uses Latin for Children, which incorporates some Shurley. 2) I thought that FFL would expand into Advanced Language Lessons, but alas that is not to be. I want to use something that will be long term as I will have a 3rd and 4th grader next year. -
What is the difference between the two? I've tried searching the forums with no luck. TIA

7th Grade US History - MFW, HOD, BF
classics4us replied to mom4praise's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
If you are on a budget and you already have all other subjects covered, I don't think I would spend $300+ just for a history program which is what you will pay for MFW, HOD, Sonlight etc. If you have a decent library I'd recommend Truthquest Am History I, II and III spread out over two years. If you do not have a good library, buy used. Just a FYI as a general rule literature based curriculum is more expensive than textbooks. Like others mentioned try buying used either online or homeschool bookfairs/used bookstore. HTH -
Combining History Curriculums (SL, BF, TQ)
classics4us replied to iafrmgrl77's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We are using My Father's World Exploration to 1850. MFW weaves the bible beautifully into their curriculum Especially in Creation to Greeks and Rome to Reformation. This year MFW has us memorizing the entire book of James (at least that's the goal ;)) I also plan on using Sonlight books from core D instead of book basket books (book basket is used in MFW, it's basically a weekly list of books that correspond with that weeks lesson) -
long shot... Campgrounds around Chattanooga, TN
classics4us replied to jenn-'s topic in General Education Discussion Board
I live near this area and am familiar with several nice campgrounds, Chester frost park is on the lake (Hixson)and has all your amenities listed. It located North of Chattanooga. Booker T Washington is across the river in Harrison Tn. If you don't mind a 45min drive to Chattanooga, there is Cloudland Canyon, it is very nice with lots of walking trails. Here's a few websites, Chester Frost is ran by the Hamilton county. http://www.hamiltontn.gov/parkrec/Maps/CampingMap.aspx Booker T Washington is a state park http://www.state.tn.us/environment/parks/BookerTWashington/ Cloudland canyon is in GA http://gastateparks.org/info/cloudland/ Please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you. Happy camping! -
Hi Karie, I will have a 7th grader next year and have the same question. I wanted to ask you after using Exp to 1850 for a year (school year) did you find that the assignments got (for a lack of a better word) harder? I guess I want to know if it challenged your child or did you still need to add to it to beef it up? If you did beef it up what did you decided to do? Thank you for your time.

I am a lefty, my mother is a lefty and my son is a lefty. It sounds to me that your dd is living in a right handed world. This is said gently. You can't help it, you're a righty. ;) If you would like to experience what your dd may be going through I suggest that you buy a pair of left handed scissors and try using them with your right hand. :) Not an easy task. Cars are made for righties too the ignition switch and gear shifters and radio controls are on the right side! :D I'm thinking that she may have been taught to tie right handed and her brain is not computing the info in a way that she understands. Does she hold her loop or bunny ear with her right hand or left hand? I hold the loop with my right hand, my left hand does all the wrapping and pulling and tugging. If she was taught to hold it with her left hand and have her right hand do all the work it may be the cause of her problem. (only in regards to tying) Im just throwing things out there, if you are concerned take her to a specialist. Mother knows best.
