TX, but getting ready to head back to ALASKA!!
  1. We're here! And now my question is, are there any good homeschool groups out here in the valley? I am still flip-flopping on whether to do Classical Conversations. Our homeschool has become much more CM in nature, but my children really miss CC. I think they really just miss the social aspect of it. Any other good groups out here? We are in Wasilla, so I am hoping to stay out this way!
  2. We used it a couple of years ago, and I would call it just okay. If I remember right, some of the illustrations were confusing, and dd thought it was just kind of goofy. They may have made some improvements by now. I would have to check. We actually dropped it part way through the year and went with the print version, which we liked much better. I like the handwriting practice for ds, so it works better for us anyway.
  3. I would vote for cd's and timeline cards, as well. I have the flash cards, and we have almost never used them.
  4. It varies for us from year to year. Our first couple of years, I spent probably 700-800 dollars. The past couple of years, I kind of had what we needed and didn't spent a whole lot. This year, I am changing almost everything. I haven't tallied up yet what I've spent, and I'm not looking forward to it! Pretty sure I've spent more this year than I have in the past.
  5. Correction to my earlier post: We are doing Cycle 3 this year, not cycle one. If you plan to always do the program at home, it really doesn't matter which cycle you start with. If you plan on joining a group at some point, you may want to go ahead and do the same cycle they are doing this year.
  6. We were members of a CC community for a couple of years and now do the memory work at home. I would say definitely get the audio cd's. They are not "necessary" but are extremely helpful, and the children enjoy them. The history songs and skip counting songs have really stuck with my children, and they whip them out any time they encounter something in their history curriculum that matches up with one. We are going to do cycle 1 this year, because we are doing American History here at home. I prefer to have our CC memory work match up with the time period we are studying, but I think that is really just personal preference. I purchased the flash cards and have never used them. As for the history timeline cards, we will be sticking with the VP history cards for now.
  7. Ours is gathering dust here. I've been thinking of pulling it out to use on the road during an upcoming trip. I think it is a good alternative to flash cards; not a replacement, necessarily, but something to use to change things up once in a while.
  8. I am SOOO glad a found this thread! I almost purchased WPD yesterday! Love the printed version, which I've used for a few years now, but I think I'm going to go with SCM's organizer and make my own forms for household planning!
  9. We do CLE math here, and I am starting LOF as a fun supplemental this next year. We will probably only do it once or twice per week. I am not really worried about seeing them apply it in "real life", as it will just be another fun way for them to experience math and look at things from a different angle. This will be for my oldest two. DD is 10 and DS is 7 (There are some youngers, too. Who knows, maybe they'll pick up something!) We are going to go ahead and just start with apples, since this is probably about right for DS7, and I am not worries about matching up with grade level. If it bores DD10, I will either move her up or possibly have her teach it to DD7. She loves doing this. As for price, I waited until I could snag some used. This is not easy but IS possible, if you are patient, which can be difficult! :) I recently purchased the first five for 10ppd each from here on the WTM forums.
  10. Hmmm...I like the looks of that one! I have been a WPD devotee but am thinking I'll need more lines soon. I think I like that I could label my own sections, too. Gonna have to think about that one.
  11. We do love the snow! We have been in OK and TX for the last five years, and for the first few, our children kept asking when all the snow was coming! We will see what five years down here has done to us; we may be a bit on the wimpy side at first, but we are pretty excited!
  12. My husband just made our reservations for the ferry the other day. Looks like we should be up there by the end of September!!!
  13. My dh grew up there, and his family is still there. They use the program and love it. I am just one of those "conspiracy theorist" types who thinks the use the testing to keep track of home schoolers. I know, I'm strange. :)
  14. Sorry to answer your question with a question, but what do you think of Laying Down the Rails? I am wanting to pick it up. We are moving from Sonlight to Truthquest and SCM. What a blessing to have so many choices!
