  1. 120 sounds about right for our swing set. I remember that the individual swings had a limit of about that much, and the double swings (meant for 2 and have additional chains/poles) had a weight limit double the single swings. I don't know what kind of reinforcement you could do to this type of swing set, though. When a bunch of kids are on ours, I see the overhead pole sag just a bit. We have a 6-leg swing set. If it's a wood set, then maybe some additional wood could be added. Can't do that on an all-metal one. The swing chains could be replaced with stronger ones. I would not expect the default chains to hold up under excessive weight.
  2. I know this was a few weeks ago, but I'm just now coming back to it. A few is not limited to 3. It's an undefined number, usually more than 2, less than several, which is also an undefined number. I usually consider a few to be roughly 3-6, and several as anywhere from 5-8-ish.
  3. Bumping...if you are interested in sharing a room at the Millennium for the convention, I have a possible lead on a room & a roommate for you.
  4. This is very subjective. It is better for some to be out on a Friday, but better for others to be out on a Monday. If I had to pick between Monday & Friday, I'd go to a Monday co-op. That's me. And that statement is not a recommendation of which co-op the OP should choose. I agree with everyone who said don't do 2 co-ops at this point. I would also pick a shorter one than 9-3, or see if that one has class hours scheduled in such a way that you could maybe do 9-1, or 10-2 or something like that. Do you need to go to all classes at that co-op, or can you do a partial day?
  5. I would not say 5 minutes if you know it probably won't be just 5 minutes. I would say "a few minutes." I would also work at being more firm with the friend about needing to get off the phone.
  6. Oh, whoops, that's because it's a secret group (not because we don't WTM people finding us, but to keep FB weirdos from finding us). If you pm me your email address, I'll send you an invite.
  7. Bumping again... We have plans to meet up on Friday, April 25 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the Hyatt (tentative location) following SWB's Burn Out talk at the Hyatt. We'll order from Chipotle and I'll pick up (need a volunteer to help me). Or you can bring your own food or no food--we still want to see you. Come over to our social group or our FB meet up group. [Edit to remove link that doesn't work...if you'd like to join the FB group, pm me your email address and I'll send you an invite.]
  8. Just wanted to mention that I updated the Midwest Homeschool Convention social board for those who are interested or planning to attend. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/groups/164-midwest-homeschool-convention/
  9. If you had an activity book of a particular style on a particular subject for a particular grade and you see one available for a "nearby"grade, or the same style for a different subject, then you'll know what the content -style or teaching style of those similar books will be without needing to look inside. So I have 100 or so of these kind of books...a range of topics, styles and grades. When I see similar covers and titles by the same publisher, I already know what they're like inside. I don't need to see inside each one to understand. I'm just trying to relate my experience here.
  10. I can't see this style of book working well as an ebook. Most of them are intended to be reproduced. Can you print from an ebook? [Edit--nevermind...I was thinking only of one format of ebooks] My post count has nothing to do with Scholastic sales. I have a Scholastic warehouse near me, so I prefer to shop there when they have warehouse sales.
  11. My MIL retired from teaching ps 5th grade a couple of years ago. She just gave me 4 boxes of books. Many were this type of scholastic books that are in this sale (and some that I got from her are in this sale). Unfortunately, they (and these in the sale) are mostly 2 types--1) very heavy on application with little academic content (I hope that when teachers use these in schools they taught content, but I received very few books with content), or 2) contained academic content but were very heavy on workbook/busy-work pages. I wouldn't buy any of it. I'm only keeping the non-workbook content books--you know the kind--true books, source books, real books. The stuff you might find in the juvenile non-fiction area of a library.
  12. 7th grade, private, religious school. Back then it was still called Jr. High. I had never heard of "middle school" at that point. Our "homeroom" was just the first class of the day, normal length of class.
  13. I would rather use these: http://www.amazon.com/Sterilite-3-Drawer-Organizer-ClearView-White/dp/B000K7RK6A/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hg_3 I have one set. Plenty big enough for books, papers, supplies. I don't care for open-top drawers like the compartment organizer listed in the first post. The drawers also look very shallow.
  14. This is pretty much what we do. Open book, do the next thing. Maybe look ahead and see if there are a few library books that will go well with History or Science.
  15. Did it occur to you that some of these women want to keep their bodies private? I did. I nursed in public when I had to, but covered up. My preference was to find a private place. It's my body. I choose who to show it to. It has nothing to do with how society views nursing.
  16. This deck is so old it's unsafe to let anyone but us walk on (we know what to look for--you're not going to fall through, but you could trip). We haven't maintained it (staining each year) in the 7 years we've lived here, so I think it should be safe for vegetable gardening.
  17. [slaps forehead] Why did I not think of that? Is it time to change my board name?
  18. Does anyone know of a good use for old deck lumber? All I can think of so far (and might do) is to make a kids' play fort (treehouse-type, multi level platforms).
  19. We need to remove our above ground pool and deck. Has anyone done this? Did you do it yourself, and how? How did you dispose of it? Did you hire someone? How much did it cost?
  20. re: dental floss for slicing cinnamon roll dough... I use the stuff I get from my dentist.
  21. I would first tell the first realtor about the houses/area you're interested, and give her the opportunity to show them to you. If she does not want to do that, let her know you'll be contacting someone else regarding that area.
  22. I had to look it up--never heard of it. I would put infrequently-used utensils, muffin pans (also infrequently used in my house), cooking magazines (I have quite a few that I've accumulated over the years), maybe cutting boards and cookie sheets, but not sure, as those are frequently used here and I think I'd want to have them somewhere more accessible, dust pan & whisk for small floor messes, etc... Edited to add: extra air fresheners, candles, paper plates (used infrequently here), batteries, screwdriver, appliance owners manuals....
