Door to Door Religious Visitors
MMinMN replied to KingM's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We live in the country in northern Minnesota. We hunt, and we fish. The last time we had a visit from the JH's we had a deer hanging in a tree, and a bucketful of fish cleaning leftovers (from that day's catch) outside the door. We must have made quite an impression, because they haven't been back since. :D All of our neighbors are strict Catholics, who tend to to have a "take no prisoners" attitude when it comes to religious solicitors. They also have a calling tree of sorts to let other neighbors know the JHs are in the area. I see no reason to be rude. I'm pretty sure my ego could not take the rejection they experience. -
I can definitely use the practice when it comes to the geography of this part of the world. http://www.rethinkingschools.org/just_fun/games/mapgame.html

All you 4H-ers...is it too late to join?
MMinMN posted a topic in General Education Discussion Board
I'm not familiar with the organization at all, so thought I would ask here. Are there any "length of membership" requirements that would prevent my kids from showing in our county fair if they did join this late in the game? -
Food costs: Saving money in the kitchen
MMinMN replied to Ria's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We found a very basic model at Walmart on sale for $15.00. It will long outlast it's equivalent value in waffles.. As a side note...my mother and her two sisters were born in the 30's. If their mother made pancakes or waffles for breakfast, they had to eat the first one plain. They could have syrup on anything after that. Things were not plentiful for them, and this was one method they used to extend what little they had. -
Haven't seen that site before...off to check it out!

Poor planning on my part... The 6th grader is reading Where the Red Fern Grows, and the 4th grader is at the end of Charlotte's Web. It was a tissue filled morning.

I need homemade Christmas gift ideas.

I made these for my sister's birthday! They look difficult, but were a snap to sew up! -
What do these words mean to you? Do you believe in one, but not the other? Do you believe one to be more effective than the other? I'm :confused1:.... Thanks!

DS9 just completed a math worksheet of subtraction problems, only he added every single one! I think I'm going to have him read the problems out loud...maybe if he does that he will **hear** what he needs to do. Obviously today what he is seeing isn't registering... :glare:

I pull out the WTM every once in awhile for inspiration, but the reality of homeschooling is much different in our house. Mostly the book sits on the shelf as a guilty reminder...much like the skinny jeans in my closet.

Do like All in One or Piece Together Your Own Curriculums?
MMinMN replied to Tabrett's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I definitely **prefer** a ready to go curriculum...but... Thanks to a "goof" in the ordering by our local public school system, the majority of our school books (including core subjects) have yet to arrive. We went ahead and started school the week of Labor Day, using some of what we had left over from last year, and scrambling to piece together things to make up the difference. I admire those of you who do your own thing...it takes alot of research, energy and time. -
How much "writing" is necessary?
MMinMN replied to blessed2fosteradopt's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I tend to get overwhelmed when I try to figure out how much to do in each subject each week. Thanks for breaking it down so well. -

How cold outside before turning on the heater?
MMinMN replied to MyBlueLobsters's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I refuse to turn the thermostat back on until October. We live in central Minnesota, and last night it got down into the 30's. We just let the sun shine in during the day, and use a warm comforter at night. In this area we're lucky to have 4 or 5 months (including Sept) that don't **absolutely** require any additional heating.
