  1. I really enjoyed using the Gods Design books for science with my daughter. She loved them too. I highly recommend them.
  2. Does anyone know of a test that can tell me what level my child is for her written expression? I know she is behind. But I am needed a score to provide social security for her re-evaluation and I have no idea what test to use. She is currently in 3rd grade. Thanks in advance!
  3. This is my plan (so far)... Math Singapore Primary Math 1A and 1B and supplementing with Mathematical Reasoning B and Math Mammoth. Dreambox for Fun Reading MCP Plaid Phonics Level 1 MCP Comprehension Plus Level A ABC Reading Eggs for Fun (Possibly All About Reading Level 1 too.. Would this be overkill? My daughter's reading ability is very behind.. So reading is my primary focus this year.). Language First Language Lessons Level 1 Spelling All about Spelling Level 1 (starting in Dec.) History/Geography SOTW 1 Evan-Moor Daily Geography Grade 1 Writing HWT Draw Write Now Science Mr. Q's Life Science Curriculum Extras Cheerleading and Swimming lessons once a week. Any suggestions?
  4. For next school year, I am expecting to spend about $300 to $350 for my daughter.
  5. Thank you for all of your kind advice.. I really appreciate it! :) I feel kindof stupid that I asked this here. I'm sorry.. I honestly just wanted to find someone who had brought a child home for homeschooling for depression and it helped. But like many of you said, bringing her home won't magically cure the depression. So, I don't know what I'm going to do for now. You all have given me a lot to think about. Thank you! :)
  6. My daughter is 5 and a half and is really struggling with reading. She is very smart but reading is very tough for her. I've tried many curriculums (abc reading eggs, ClickN kids, Bob Books etc.) and nothing helps. With Bob Books she just memorizes every page so she never really learns to read. She has a great memory! Any recommendations for programs that have worked for you? I really appreciate your help! Thanks!
  7. all of the posts in this thread have been incredibly helpful to me. Thank you so much for starting it! :)
  8. I have to second the idea of seeing a neuropsychologist. They seem to be the best at diagnosing... A psychologist who utilizes assessments is another option. From my experience, pediatricians are not the best when it comes to making a diagnosis. Good luck!
  9. Thank you for sharing! My daughter has Asperger's and I can relate in SO many ways... I get those looks all the time. This was exactly what I needed to read. Thanks! :)
  10. Hi! We are currently homeschooling, but transitioning to afterschooling in the fall. During the summer we just keep doing our regular studies. My daughter is 5 years old and loves to learn. We tend to take short breaks during the year, but school year round. My daughter has autism and she enjoys our set schedule and structure. I can't imagine taking a break during the summer. My daughter would be so bored.. I say just take your childs cues.. If your child wants to learn, then stick with your regular schedule.
  11. Hi! I am new to the afterschooling board. My daughter is 5 and has Asperger's and is gifted. She will be starting kindergarten in the fall. I've been pre-homeschooling her since she was 3 years old. Currently she is mostly doing kinder and first grade level work. I am sad about sending her to school, but she is going to a special autism charter school. The therapy she'll get there will be more intensive than the kind we do now. My question is, how much time of afterschooling do you do with a young child? Are there particular topics you do or don't do? Do you purchase additional curriculum like traditional homeschooling? I know this has probably been asked before. But I am new to the forum and don't have the slightest clue how to find it. I truly appreciate your input. I am particularly concerned about the school making things too easy. My daughter is very smart and loves to learn. She'll be in a general education class... However, majority of the other children have lower functioning autism. I just want to make sure she is continued to be challenged. Because she really enjoys it. This will be such a tough transition for me. I love homeschooling. But I know that this school will be a great place for her. Thanks in advance! :001_smile:
  12. Your workbox system turned out great! I always love seeing others ideas. :) Thank you for sharing!
  13. I use Nancy Larson Homeschool Science K and LOVE it! Just wanted to throw that option out there. :)
  14. Hi! I made a blog post about what I use for my workbox system. You can see my post here: Creative Learning Fun (it has pictures). I purchased (3) three drawer storage containers at target and then stacked them. It works great for us! All the materials fit well too. Hope this helps! :)
  15. For kinder this year, we did: ABC Reading Eggs Bob Books Singapore Earlybird Mathematics A & B Textbooks Nancy Larson Homeschool Science K Handwriting without Tears Beginning Geography by Evan Moore. We have loved every item this year! Everything worked great for my daugher. My daughter officially enters kinder in the fall. However, we've been working ahead of schedule. She'll be on first grade level in the fall. Hope this helps! :)
  16. I also have to say how much I love handwriting without tears.. It has been wonderful for my daughter who has significant fine motor delays. One suggestion I would make is to use the chalk slate first and then move to practicing on an easel. I just draw a similar square and smiley face on the easel just like they do on the chalk slate. It's a bit more difficult for them to write on there.. But it really helps for kids who have fine motor issues. Good luck!
  17. I'm feeling a bit conflicted at the moment.. My daughter has several special needs and is only five years old. Currently she is in counseling and the counselor is highly recommending that I put her on medications for her obsessive complusive and anxiety symptoms. Have any of you put your child on meds this young? She just seems so young.. But the therapist seems to think her symptoms right now are getting in the way of her making real progress in all of her therapies.. I was just curious if anyone has been in a similar situation and did it help to use meds? She is already using supplements: Artic Cod Liver Oil, Multi-Vitamin and Melatonin.. Thanks in advance! ~ Elizabeth
  18. Amy, No problem at all! I'm glad I could help. :) Honestly, I think picking and choosing your own curriculum is a lot more fun anyways... Have fun! :) - Elizabeth
  19. Amy, I am no longer using Calvert. However, it wasn't because I didn't like it. It was just out of our price range. I was able to select my curriculum cheaper by buying it separately. Calvert was pretty good and others have told me they enjoyed it too. The only downfall for me is that I love to supplement curriculum. Since the Calvert curriculum was so complete it never really gave me the opportunity to supplement. Nothing extra was "needed." But overall it is a great option if you want a no fuss curriculum. :) I hope this helps!
  20. I also have to recommend Sparkpeople.. It is free and fun to use. :)
  21. Thank you for asking this. I love the Evan Moore book, but I always wished I had more stuff to go with it. :)
  22. Calvert Homeschool is pretty laid out for you. You don't need to plan that much. We used it for PreK and my daughter did pretty well with it. It comes with everything you need right out of the box. Easy payment plans too. :)
  23. Have you looked into Nancy Larson Science? We are really enjoying it a lot. :) My daughter is learning pretty quickly because it is interactive. It's very well laid out too.
