  1. I'm looking for a sample of Lial's Pre-Algebra. The link provided by Mammoth Math takes me to the publisher's website, but I can't seem to find the "Take a Closer Look" feature. All I can find is the table of contents. Can anyone help me with finding a link where I can take a look at a lesson or chapter of Lial's? I didn't have any luck on Amazon either. Thanks so much!
  2. Jann, if you're still hanging around to see this . . . is there anything else you would recommend purchasing other than than the solutions manual?
  3. Thanks Jann! I was hoping you would respond! I'm pretty sure that we will use Lial's for pre-algebra. I'm just trying to figure out which book is best and I definitely want to purchase the CD's . . . and not break the bank. :001_smile:
  4. I'm considering purchasing Lial's Prealgebra: An Integrated Approach. I'm not sure if I'll buy 3rd or 4th edition - probably whichever is cheaper unless there is a good argument for one over the other. I'd really like to purchase the CD lectures that correlate with the lessons. Are there multiple editions of the lectures? ... If I buy the CD's do I need to be careful to purchase the correct edition that correlates to the textbook? The CDs that I saw on Amazon say first edition and I'm wondering if I can use these to go along with the 3rd or 4th edition text. Can anyone help answer this for me? I'd really appreciate it! :)
  5. How important is the sequencing in the W&R books? By the end of this year we will have worked through Books 1-4. We've used: Book 1 and 2 - 4th grade Book 3 and WWtB - 5th grade Book 4 and IEW themed based - 6th grade My tentative plan for the next couple years: Book 7 and 10 - 7th grade IEW theme based - 8th grade Would it be a big deal if I skip some books and select the ones I want to use based on topic and recommended grade level? I'm looking at the focus of each book and the skills that I want to work on with my dd. Book 7 covers descriptive essays and Book 10 covers comparative essays. She's an eager writer. I wouldn't say advanced, but she's fairly strong. Based on our experience with CAP, I feel comfortable skipping, but am wondering if there are any red flags in doing so. Would this plan work? I'm looking for variety of writing for her with some structure (and something that offers a bit of hand holding for me). ;)
  6. Is the Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia still included for weekly reading in Christian Kids Explore Chemistry? If so, is there a particular version of this book that I should purchase? Thank you!
  7. I'm specifically wanting to know how the Chem C1000 kit is used. Are labs scheduled exclusively from this and not from the textbook? I'm curious since they don't use the lab kit from Apologia, but use C1000 instead. I'm assuming that if we would want to do any of the labs to follow along with the specific text that we would have to purchase additional supplies. Are the experiments in C1000 comparable to the Apologia kit? C1000 is cheaper so that is a bonus if it all fleshes out. Hope this makes sense. :)
  8. Anyone use this that can answer a science question for me about the labs in Chemistry and Physics?
  9. Thank you so much! My other consideration is this . . . Exploration Creation with Chemistry and Physics with the notebook journal and C1000 lab I'm looking for something that will get done, is age appropriate, but not too light or heavy - we will cover chemistry in high school so an intro at this point is fine. I'm on the fence between these two plans. Anyone else viewing this care to chime in on which would be better for 7th grade? :bigear:
  10. What are your favorite resources to beef this up for 7th grade? I'm considering adding in Mystery of the Periodic Table, The Elements, a couple books on Einstein and Curie... any other recommendations? I may use part of the schedule from Guesthollow. It looks like Fizz, Bubble, Flash has been discontinued so I'll need to find something else.
  11. CAP Writing and Rhetoric has been wonderful for my eager writer.
  12. Thank you, Brittany! This is so helpful and since I'm looking for something to help me teach literary analysis I feel more confident that Reading Roadmaps will work well :-)
  13. These both look like great resources! I'm leaning toward purchasing Reading Roadmaps since I already own Center for Lit's Teaching the Classics . . . but I just watched a brief video clip from Andrew Pudewa, who recommends both of these resources, but he mentioned that Timeline of Classics has additional audio and video resources. Timeline of Classics is also organized by historical time period, but that's not necessarily a deal breaker for me. Anyone care to chime in to help me decide between these two? Thank you!
  14. Update: It's the middle of summer and our math woes continue. We successful start up with Mammoth was brief and the way it explained problems drove by husband crazy, especially in the geometry unit which we decided not to finish. So we started our 5th grade year with Horizons, finished the first book and part of the second, then switched to the second half of Mammoth which we completed except for t geometry chapter. Comparing these two programs I think that we would have been better off sticking with Horizons. I think the layout of Mammoth amplified her feelings of defeat when it comes to math. So . . . I just ordered CLE math for 6th grade and we'll see how it goes. I think it will give more detailed instruction and the spiral layout is similar to Horizons which I think is working for her. I'm not too concerned about CLE not being in color. She's at an age where not everything needs to be colorful and fun. We will take the summer to go back to complete the second book of Horizons and work on weak areas. If CLE isn't a better fit then I imagine we will go back to Horizons. I was/am hoping that we can cover Algebra in 8th grade, but she may need to slower pace. We'll see! :001_unsure:
  15. She is almost 11, wrapping up 5th grade. Would you mind sharing what you don't like about it?
  16. Has anyone used the literature guides from Bright Ideas Press. Are they well done? I'm looking for a good lit guide for The Bronze Bow. It must be something that I can download. Thank you!
  17. Is anyone willing to share a sample letter requesting deferred enrollment?. My daughter plans to take a gap year before going to college. We are missionaries overseas and she wants to wait a year before launching back to the states. She plans to devote more time to language learning, to be more involved in ministry and to work part time helping out at a private, international Christian school. (Right now she thinks that her future holds plans for returning overseas.) She also wants to take take to mature. She's is not sure what she wants to major in, but feels called to ministry overseas. Honestly, she is leaning toward going to Bible college and may not end up going to the university where she was accepted at all. Of course, I'm not going to share that with them and I know that a lot can change during her gap year. I just want to keep the door open. The college is a private, Christian university that is generally supportive of gap years so I don't foresee it being a problem. TIA!
  18. I would not spend the money to go back to Saxon, but would try to find a combination of free or cheap resources to finshes out the year. I liked the suggestion from Silver Moon. You could also use Khan Academy. We hit a bump in the road with Horizons 5 last month. I've decided to shelf it and downloaded Book B for Mammoth Math 5. So far it's working well and I think we found our new math curriculum for next year. They have several free sample pages and worksheets, by grade or topic, that may help you finish out your year.
  19. I agree! We are having success with W&R. My dd loves it and I continue to see gradual, steady growth in her writing.
