  1. It's great to hear how you are using this. My dd loves workbooks. We will be using Serl's PLL and I was planning on supplementing with KISS. Now I'm wondering if I should go with Treasures. I didn't realize there was a reading book. I will have to check it out. I think I need to stop looking at curriculum. There are just too many choices and temptations! :)
  2. I just discovered McGraw-Hill Treasures Practice books for elementary spelling, writing and grammar. Does anyone use these? I'm curious!
  3. We will also be using MFW Adv, Serl's PLL, Horizons Math, Spelling Workout B (and I'm considering BJU for future or R & S). I am new to homeschooling and can't wait to get started with my 2nd grader this summer! I think these will be a good fit, but am open to changes if something doesn't work. I also have two high schoolers who will be homeschooling through an online charter school. Thank you for all your suggestions! :)
  4. Thanks so much! It looks like we are on the same path with a lot of our curriculum! :)
  5. Your thoughts please . . . I live overseas and don't want to spend a lot of money on manipulatives we won't use. Can you tell me what you consider to be essential manipulatives to use with Horizons?
  6. Thank for starting this thread - it will be fun to follow! Some of my favorites are: http://www.mamajenn.com/ http://www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/ http://satorismiles.com/ http://trainingthemup.blogspot.com/ - great ideas for MFW!
  7. I'm a new homeschooler and this is the first time I've seen this list. Thank you so much for all the helpful resources!!:hurray:!
  8. MFW Adventures (history/geography, bible, science, art and music) PLL and KISS grammar Daily 6-Trait Writing Spelling Workout B D'Nealian handwriting Horizons math lots of reading and selections from Sonlight Core D readers ballet and piano :001_smile:
  9. Looks like these will be great with MFW Adv. Thank you!
  10. Everything is ordered and beginning to arrive! Just need to select a few books to go with MFW Adv (for book basket).
  11. A year and a half ago we moved out of country to serve as missionaries. It's been difficult, but our kids (ages 6, 13 and 16) have all transitioned beautifully. We had always lived in the same town as our parents and enjoyed close relationships with family. We had never made a big move in our lives! Honestly, the transition was the most difficult for me and our oldest child. It takes time to build new relationships and literally start all over. There are days when I'm tired of being stretched, but that's how we grow. Even though our children had strong feelings about not wanting to move, they would tell you that they continue to see confirmation that this is where we are meant to be right now. It can be overwhelming, but the Lord is faithful. Keep talking and praying with your kids. Homeschooling was a first for us as well so we've had our share of bumps in the road. I agree with Jean who commented that one of the hardest things was getting to know people, getting involved and discovering what to do. I think this depends a lot on personality and may be more of a challenge for some than others. When we lived in the states my role and routines were established. This is somerthing that I'm still trying to sort out. I don't know how long our time will be here, but I know that our hearts and minds have been changed forever. Praying the Lord will guide and direct your steps.
  12. What are your thoughts on going through the whole book in one year? :bigear:
  13. My dd knows the material, but wants to continue calendar time next year. She enjoys this activity in her class. We will be newbie homeschoolers next year. May I ask where you got your calendar?
  14. Thanks for starting this thread. I'm still on the fence trying to decide what to use for my 2nd grader. I really want to try daily 6 trait writing but keep hearing great things about WWW. Decisions...decisions! :)
  15. I was looking at SL but decided to go with MFW. I'll be interested to see the reviews of the revised curriculum.
  16. Here's another great resource for crafts: http://www.daniellesplace.com/index.html
  17. We will also begin homeschooling our 2nd grader in the fall. After much research I'm excited to try: MFW Adventures (bible, history and science) Horizons Math (Sinapore looks great too) Growing with Grammar (since you're wanting a more classical approach, you may want to look into Primary Language Lessons) Daily 6 Trait Writing Spelling Workout B D'Nealian handwriting (because she's already started this program in her current school) and lots of reading Good luck finding the curriculum that's just right for you! There is so much out there. Just take your time and remember that you can make changes along the way. Enjoy the journey! :)
  18. This was very helpful. Thank you for responding!
  19. Thank you for your help! This forum is such a blessing for this newbie homeschooler. :001_smile:
  20. I have an advanced 2nd grader who will be coming out of private school so I am new to the home school scene. I am considering using level 3 GWG and WWW. Has anyone done this? Do you think this level would be too much? Grammar lessons tend to be repetitive and I don't wind to spend money on material she has already learned. Advice appreciated! :)
  21. Thanks for responding! I'm curious . . . what didn't you like about the 6-trait writing?
  22. I will be home schooling a 2nd grader for the first time next year. I'm excited to try MFW Adventures and plan to use it along with Horizons math, Growing With Grammar 2, Winning With Writing 2, Spelling Workout B, a variety of SL books for reading and D'Nealian handwriting (since she's already begun this program in school). Don't know if I helped, but thought you might like a glimpse of our selections for next year. Good luck on your search! :001_smile:
  23. Has anyone compared these two writing programs? I'm a new home schooler and am trying to decide which to use with my 2nd grader for next year. Thank you! :001_smile:
  24. We will be using MFW Adventures for 2nd grade next year. Since we live overseas, we won't be able to utilize a library for "book basket" selections. I'm considering SL 3rd grade readers or the readers for core D. I've noticed that the core D readers have some of the same books included in MFW deluxe package. Does anyone have any experience with this or recommendations? This will be our first year homeschooling and I just can't seem to decide!
