  1. I know that Master Books Chemistry for high school if fairly new, but I was hoping to find some reviews for it. Is anyone using it? How is it going? I have a slightly math phobic daughter who will likely not be a STEM major. I own the 2nd edition of Apologia chemistry, but don't think it will be a good fit for her. I'm considering Friendly Chemistry, but am curious about Master Books. I'd prefer something that teaches directly to the student that isn't too heavy on math. The lab supplies for Master Books is $$$ so that's a definite negative. Any other thoughts out there? I'm just looking for something high school credit worthy, to cover the basics of chemistry for my college-bound, non science kid.
  2. I agree! We are missionaries and have graduated and launched two daughters from the mission field. One returned to the states to attend university to earn her degree in education, and my middle would like to remain in the mission field. She isn't sure where she will go or how she will serve, but she is currently attending a Bible college in Hungary where she did a one-year missions program. She recently decided to continue her studies to earn her degree in theology. She has a heart for MK's and supporting church planters in the field. She's learned that having a degree can help open up opportunities to enter certain countries, and to work/serve at international Christian schools, teaching English, etc.
  3. I've read that this is based on CK-12 chemistry with online labs from Macmillan/Late Nite Labs. Has anyone used Elemental Chemistry for the Rhetoric Stage? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thank you!
  4. I'm so glad I came upon this post. Lots of helpful information. Thank you!
  5. I'm in the same boat. I have a child that enjoys LL. I'd love to see LL add another guide that covers 20th century literature to compliment world history.
  6. Has anyone used the updated guide for this? I'd love to receive some feedback if you have. Did you feel the need to add or drop anything? Thank you!
  7. Can anyone share how Windows to the World compares to BJU Fundamentals of Literature? I know that WttW is heavy on teaching annotation. I actually used WttW with my middle daughter, but keep looking at BJU which seems to have a broader scope. It gets good reviews and seems like it might offer a little more guidance for me. What do you all think? TIA!
  8. I'm not clear about how to use the rubrics in Writing With Skill in order to determine a grade. Do you assign a value to each component? What does that look like for you? It just seems that if there are 6 (in some cases more) separate things listed under Organization and another 6 listed under Mechanics that it would get too complicated. Maybe I'm overthinking this. The only writing rubric I'm familiar with is from Essentials in Writing which was very easy to use and understand. With EIW rubrics there were only four different sections with an overall total of 16 possible points. I would just use the rubrics from EIW, but they are more vague and I like how WWS rubrics include more specifics to check for content and skill sets. I would appreciate any advice or tips. Thank you!!!
  9. Why are the listings in the classifieds now only good for 3 days? Also, when I try to renew my items, it won't let me so I'm having to recreate another listing. Am I missing something?
  10. Thank you, Root Ann! Your response is very helpful. I hadn't thought of weaving in Life Pac the way you mentioned. I like this idea!
  11. Any GSWS users out there? I'm wondering if it's possible to work through the book in a semester without it being overkill. I plan to pair it with Lifepac Spanish 1. Heart of Dakota counts GSWS and half of LP Spanish 1 as one year of Spanish. I''m planning to do the same, but I'd rather not drag out the course over two years. How possible is this? Does anyone have any recommendations for pacing? Thank you!
  12. NM Figured out that I needed to log in with my email and that fixed the problem. ?
  13. This is very helpful and encouraging. Thank you!
  14. I have a middle schooler who raves about history and "wants to become the next Diana Waring." She is interested in being a history major to possibly become a middle school history teacher. Other than teaching, what kinds of careers are there for history majors?
  15. I'm looking for resources to enhance our understanding of The Odyssey. So far, I've found CDs from Memoria Press and Vandiver's lectures from TGC. We've listened to samples of both, but my daughter wants someone like "Diana Waring." 🤣 I doubt there is anything out there, but thought I'd throw this out to my WTM friends.
  16. My daughter just finished reading Little Women and I came across this old post. Great resources! Thanks, Lori!
  17. Our plan for 8th grade: Algebra 1 - Lial's English - Lightning Literature, WWS2, Rod and Staff grammar and spelling History/Bible - HOD Missions to Modern Marvels Science - Apologia Physical Science PE - Fitness Blender Continue guitar, knitting and cooking and maybe dabble in Duolingo Spanish -just for fun to prepare for high school Spanish
  18. My lenses are so thick on my glasses that I can't completely close the arms. 😣
  19. I am so very sorry for the loss of your precious daughter. You did not fail. Please give yourself grace. Praying for you.
  20. I include first and second semester grades. Since transcripts are usually required before the completion of the second semester, I list those classes as "work in progress." I record the grades at the end of our school year and submit the final transcript to colleges/universities. ETA that none of the universities where my daughters applied used Common App so my reply may not help with your situation.
  21. Following, too! 😊 I've wondered the same thing. I like to have things planned out for me which is why I've always used MFW or HOD. We've decided to try MFW AHL for 9th grade, but I'm still curious about BF.
  22. Have you looked at Teaching the Classics by Center for Lit? It is meant to be a parent/teacher support, but I watched the videos with my child. Adam Andrews does an excellent job of illustrating how to help your student analyze literature using Socratic questioning and discussion. I have Reading Roadmaps and Ready Readers and think the Ready Readers offers more hand holding which is what I wanted. If you have a strong background in literature, you may be fine with Reading Roadmaps.
