  1. I'd like to continue with WWS 2 and 3 for high school. What else do you add to it (if anything) to make up the composition part of your grade?
  2. I was just looking at Literary Lesson from Lord of the Rings. I could also schedule Iliad and Odyssey and lectures from The Great Courses. I want to continue using WWS twice a week. How is this looking?
  3. Basically I'm looking for something mapped out for me to use with SWB's History of the Ancient World if I decide not to go with MFW AHL.
  4. I'm looking for something like LL to use along with our study of ancient history. I'd like something already put together that isn't busywork and includes critical thinking and literary elements. I like how LL includes novels, short stories and poems. Is there anything out there like this that would pair nicely while studying ancient history?
  5. My daughter averages about 5 hours a day except for Friday which is a shorter day.
  6. Sounds great! Thanks for the detailed info SebastianCat!
  7. Have you looked at Heart of Dakota? The guide includes questions to check for comprehension along with a "key idea" note. The ideas are also cemented through oral and written narrations. It doesn't include vocabulary in the history guide, but if you use their Drawn into the Heart of Reading literature program it does include worksheets for the student to write down unfamiliar words and instructs them to look them up in the dictionary.
  8. I only used MFW for two years. It's been a few years, but I don't recall it having vocabulary or questions.
  9. If you do BJU math online do you still need to purchase the textbook or any other resources?
  10. My daughter is having trouble with Lial's prealgebra, but she doesn't want to switch to something else. My husband also doesn't think we need to switch and feels that our daughter is grasping the concepts. I think part of the problem is that we were previously using a spiral based curriculum (Horizons and CLE) and Lial's is mastery. Lial's does have commulative review before each test, but my daughter is still having trouble identifying how to set up problems within a set of mixed equations. For example, she will do great on each individual section within a chapter (mixed numbers and equations, adding and subtracting signed numbers, multiplying and dividing mixed numbers, equations containing fractions, area and volume, etc), but when it comes to the test she does poorly. My daughter feels that the problems in the commulative review are easier and don't accurately reflect the more difficult problems on the test. Any suggestions on how we can add in more review? Would you suggest supplementing with something else? Need some help here. Pretty please and thank you!!!
  11. My 7th grader is using WWS1. I'm on the fence of what to use for 8th grade next year. I like the skills being taught in WWS, but my daughter prefers CAP Writing and Rhetoric. She enjoys creative writing and CAP gave her a little more room for creativity. She is a decent writer, but is resistant to structure. For 8th grade, I'm considering using CAP Commonplace and The Lively Art of Writing or continuing with WWS2. We've been doing Friday Freewrites from the Bravewriter blog for a relaxed, fun, creative outlet.
  12. 7th grade: Ellen McHenry Elements & Carbon Chemistry 8th grade: Aplogia Physical Science
  13. We've used both Horizons and CLE. CLE gets our vote.
  14. I haven't used Life Pacs yet, but it gets good reviews. This may be helpful. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/315663-alpha-omegas-spanish-lifepacsopinions I had two daughters who used Rosetta Stone, one used it for 3 years of high school Spanish through an online charter school and the other only used it for one year and then we switched to A beka Spanish because my daughter felt like she wasn't really learning. I used A Beka because a friend offered it to me. It was a good fit, but I had to place my daughter in their Spanish 1 book, because Spanish 2 would have been too big of a jump coming from Rosetta Stone which is a completely different method with no formal grammar. Even my oldest didn't care much for Rosetta Stone, but it got the job done. I wouldn't use it again by itself. If I use it again I will pair it with something that covers grammar.
  15. Is there a particular edition I should get? Thank you!
  16. Is there particular grade level where you feel that research paper writing skills should be covered? I'm wondering if this is a skill we should be cover for 8th grade or if it would be better to put it off until high school.
  17. This is my very tentative plan and hasn't been tested at all so take it with a grain of salt. My daughter is only in 7th grade, but I've been trying to map out what four years of Spanish MIGHT look like. Spanish 1 - GTWS paired with Rosetta Stone Spanish 2 - Life Pac Spanish 1 Spanish 3 - Life Pac Spanish 2 Spanish 4 - Maybe upper levels of Rosetta Stone
  18. My daughter has been using Vocabulary from Classical Roots for the last few years and I'm pondering whether or not to continue using it. She is an avid reader and reads different genres. My goals for vocabulary study are to increase comprehension and to prepare her for future SAT testing. Is there another resource that would be better with these goals in mind or are we on the right path? I've noticed the increased workload as we enter the middle school years and time is valuable. I want to use it well.
  19. Following. We are using Figuratively Speaking this year as well and I would love to see this resource too.😊
  20. Another vote for CLE. My daughter sounds similar to your daughter. We started with and used Horizons for 4 years, switched to Mammoth, hit a road bump again and then had a great year with CLE.
  21. Thank you Pistachio Mom and Lisa for your help and wisdom!
