  1. My oldest will be a senior at Biola. She loves the small campus and their Great Books honors program - Torrey. They also offer an accelerated teaching credential program. She received a nice financial aid package and it the has been a great fit all around! We originally thought she was UC/CSU bound, but she didn't end up applying to any. Private universities seem to be more homeschool friendly.
  2. If I use Art in Focus does it require a lot of art supplies? I live overseas where finding supplies can be challenging. We have the basics - sketch pad, pencils, water color paints and 135 lb paper, but beyond that it gets tricky. *Edited to add that I reviewed a PDF of the book and the projects look doable. Thanks for all the great suggestions.
  3. Thank you so much! I feel that pressing the "like" button isn't nearly enough!
  4. Is a teacher's edition necessary for Art in Focus? I'm totally inept when it comes to anything pertaining to art. 🙃
  5. More great options. I like the idea of a chronological study of art. I'm off to check out Art in Focus. Thank you!
  6. I love your ideas! Thank you for helping me to see outside the box.I already own Right Brain Drawing so that's a plus. 😊
  7. I just saw that Hewitt uses The Story of Art for a year-long course. I may have found what I'm looking for.
  8. I just read that some universities require one full year in the same area of study...one year of dance, music, art, etc. Maybe I should decide which one I'd rather use and pair it with something else.
  9. Also, would you list them separately on a transcript? One semester of drawing and one semester of art history?
  10. I'm considering using Drawing From the Right Side of the Brain along with God and the History of Art. Is this sufficient for 1 year of fine art credit? Thank you!
  11. So if you assigned this separately as elective credit did you give a full credit or half? Thank you for all the helpful responses!
  12. I think WWS gives more detailed, step-by-step instruction to the student which she needs. When given an inch she takes a mile sort of speak when it comes to writing. I'd like to see her learn how to follow directions more closely which WWS makes her do. It's too early to tell how WWS1 will turn our for us, but I'm not throwing out the idea of returning to W&R for 8th grade. Thanks for your thoughts! I will look more closely at books 5 & 6. :)
  13. I've been thinking about our future writing goals in order to develop a tentative sequence for our middle school and high school years. The things I'd like to work towards are competency in expository writing, research paper writing and persuasive essays. For my daughter's elementary years she used CAP Writing and Rhetoric Books 1-4, then a year with IEW Medieval Based History Writing. rShe loved CAP because she felt it allowed her a bit more creative freedom. She resists structure and didn't care much for IEW, but did fine with it. She needs to work more on narrative writing and structure so that is our starting point for middle school. Here is my tentative plan. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thank you! 7th grade (in progress) - Writing With Skill 1 8th grade - Writing With Skill 2 9th grade - One Year Adventure Novel - After a couple years of working on expository writing, I thought it would be good to reward her with something that speaks to her heart - creative writing. I may be holding out this carrot while we make our way through WWS. :001_smile: 10th grade - CAP Writing & Rhetoric Book 7, 8 (and maybe 9) - We love CAP and book 7 covers step by step instruction through a research project 11th grade - CAP Writing & Rhetoric Books, 10, 11, 12 (and maybe 12) - work on persuasive essays 12 grade ?
  14. I'm thinking of using One Year Adventure Novel for my daughter's 9th grade writing curriculum. For those that have used it, do you typically add in other language arts components such as grammar and literary analysis? We will likely be using HOD World Geography which schedules BJU Fundamentals of Literature , Essentials in Writing, Rod and Staff and some novels/plays. I would definitely drop EiW, but what else should I consider dropping to avoid overkill? I'm particularly interested in covering BJU Fundamentals in Literature. Would this be too much? Thank you!
  15. Does your child qualify for a credit card on his own? Our daughters wouldn't qualify because of their lack of employment and credit history. We live overseas so this would have been difficult. We have a credit union in the states that has a starter credit card. Our daughter took out a $500 loan which we consigned for and it allowed her to secure a low limit credit card. By making the payments she is also working to establish some credit. For emergencies only, we also added her to one of our cards.
  16. I'm not certain, but I believe CLE math weaves some consumer math in the upper levels. So, maybe you could continue to work on algebra 2 while covering some consumer math.
  17. Thank you for taking time to respond. Your review is very helpful!
  18. Looking for reviews for Monarch online Spanish from Alpha Omega publishers. Has anyone tried it?
  19. We had a great year with CLE. We used it successfully all year for 6th grade. It was the right choice and a great fit! We just started Lial's prealgebra and I was a little reluctant to switch. I usually don't like to switch when something is working well. The reasons we switched were because CLE stretches out prealgebra over two years and I wanted my daughter to become familiar with the layout of a more traditional textbook. I chose Lial's after reading several reviews about how it provides several examples and step by step instructions.I think my daughter is ready for Lial's and doesn't need to spend two years covering prealgebra. However, if I find that we chose unwisely I won't hesitate to slow down and jump back in to CLE.
  20. I will have my 7th grader use Book A. This will be our third year using VfCR. This thread may help you to decide between the two. http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/476979-wordly-wise-vs-vocab-from-classical-roots/
  21. My oldest is enjoying the Torrey honors program at Biola, "a Christian, Biblically centered great books liberal education program..." http://academics.biola.edu/torrey/
  22. Following - I have a rising 7th grader and have been wondering about this as well. I recently had my daughter play around with Power Point and she is currently creating a presentation on the last book she read. She is learning about Word as she types up her essays. I would also like her to learn some basic skills in Excel.
