  1. Our 4th grade schedule is very similar to this. :-)
  2. Bethben - I noticed that you are using HOD. We will be switching to HOD next year and I'm fairly certain that I will place my daughter in CTC. I'd like to get the notebook that goes with Apologia Chemistry/Physics, but want to keep the amount of writing manageable. I'm expecting that the change to HOD will add more written work. Has this been manageable for your son?
  3. Apologia Young Explorers Chemistry and Physics? My daughter really wants to do chemistry next year for 5th grade (she will be 10). More than anything, she loves hands-on experiments which are lacking in our science this year. I'm leaning toward chemistry/physics to capture her enthusiasm, but I hear that Science in the Beginning is loaded with hands-on experiments which is what I'm looking for. Does anyone have any recommendations on which one might be better for my dd? I like the ease of simple experiments, but my dd is ready for something a little more challenging. Thank you!
  4. Sociability 23 - Need for space 78 Fairly accurate :-)
  5. Has anyone used A Beka Spanish 1 and 2 and then something else for a third year of Spanish? I'm still looking at options for my daughter. Currently, I'm looking at Visual Link Spanish or Breaking the Spanish Barrier for Spanish 3, but I would love to get some more feedback. Thank you!
  6. This may be a silly question, but here it goes. :001_unsure: Do you have your child read through a whole book before engaging questions from the Socratic List? It almost seems like you would have to, but I'm so use to breaking a book down chapter by chapter (working on vocabulary, comprehension questions, etc). I feel like we should still be discussing the book chapter by chapter. Do you still do this and then dig deeper once your child is done reading the entire book. Would love to hear your thoughts on how to implement Teaching the Classics. I love it, but I am still learning as this is a totally new thing for me. Thank you!
  7. Just following along in case I find myself in this same situation. Once again, you all are offering some great suggestions!
  8. I'm still looking into options to provide my daughter with a third year of Spanish (following A Beka Spanish 2). I prefer an online or DVD course since this is something I am unable to teach. For those of you who have used Homeschool Spanish Academy how many classes would you recommend signing up for in order for a student to earn a year's worth of credit? Thank you!
  9. Hmmm...I think this may be the one I saw. Thank you!!!
  10. I'm looking for a free, online resource that offers grammar review exercises and/or quizzes appropriate for a high school student. I remember coming across a site listed in an old thread, but I now can't find it. Thank you!
  11. You all have some great information here. I'm marking this so I can find it later. My dd wants to take another year of Spanish next year and I have no idea how we will go about it. She used Rosetta Stone for 1 year then A Beka for years 2 and 3. So far, I'm looking into BJU Spanish 3 or Visual Link, but there aren't many options for Spanish 3. We can't afford The Potter's School.
  12. My daughter is using A Beka for Spanish and enjoys the video instruction. She has expressed interest in taking their English 12 course next year, but I was hoping to cover British literature while continuing to work on composition and grammar. Would it be overkill to add in a semester of British literature? (I'm considering Excellence in Literature.) Any other ideas on how we could make these work together? . . . or are there any other solid, video-based options that cover British literature, composition and grammar for a senior? Thank you!
  13. I haven't heard of shmoop. I'm off to check it out. Thank you for the suggestion. :-)
  14. My dd mentioned that she would prefer to have something that offers video instruction. Does anyone have any experience with Switched on Schoolhouse English IV? Thoughts . . . ?
  15. Thank you! Any recommendations for what you would use for a semester of composition?
  16. I'd love to hear what others are doing for their student's senior year. My original thought was to cover British literature, but I'm wondering if that would be the best path for my dd. Here is a bit of history: She received some great writing instrucction her 7th grade year at a private school. I've seen her writing and although essay writing may not be her strength, she is creative and capable. 8th year was a flop 9th grade year she was enrolled in an online charter school where I believe they covered some literary analysis and essay writing for which she received an "A". (So I assumed she was solid in her writing abilities.) 10th grade year we decided to ditch the online charter since my dd did not enjoy it. We took the leap into homeschool independently. I did not start out with a writing curriculum and my plan was to use the composition assignments aligned to world history using a writer's handbook as our guide for instruction and grading. It turned out to be a very difficult year as we moved in with my mom for 8 months to help care for her while she battled cancer. A battle she lost in June. Mid year I purchased Essentials in Writing after noticing her writing abilities were not up to par and I knew I didn't have the skill set myself and was overwhelmed with juggling life. (being honest here-please don't judge me). We did see some progress and she knows the basics of how to outline and draft an essay. 11th grade - current yeaar - I've decided to back up and we are covering Teaching the Classics and Windows to the World. I'm feeling confident that we are going to make great progress this year. My husband is also pitching in to help as he has more experience with writing. So...why am I already thinking about next year? We live overseas and have an opportunitiy to have a group of people bring us some curriculum in the near future. My original thought was to cover British literature. What would you recommend based on the above info. My dd is interested in attending college and I want her to be a well prepared and confident writer. I'm looking at IEW College-Bound student package. I'd like something to cover literature, composition and some grammar review. Any suggestions. If you are still with me, thank you for taking the time to read this. I'm very thankful for this group! Blessings, Julie
  17. Thank you for your kind words, Debbie! I also had to go through my mom's home since my dad passed away several years ago. It is a physically and emotionally tough job. We have been back home for about 2 1/2 weeks now and I'm still tired.
  18. I often wish I held the personality to just let things go and call it good...but I am a total box checker! I'm sitting here wanting to set up my records for the current school year and am finding myself still tying up loose ends from last school year. We spent a good part of last year just getting by as I was privileged to be a care taker to my mom who was battling cancer. After 8 months, my mom finished her treatments and it seemed that she had turned a corner. After our family returned to 'normal' for a whole 2 1/2 months I received a call that my mom had taken a turn for the worse. We dropped everything at the end of May to be with my mom before she passed. My dd still has tests and work ungraded and I'm just not in the mood to go back to last year. Still I feel that since she is in high school that I need to do these things to validate her grades. I also want to honor my daugher's diligence for getting these things done. I am proud of her ability to work independently in the midst of a very difficult and straining time for our family. I will get over it and eventually get it done, but just needed to vent a little. Thankful for a safe place to share!
