  3. My 2nd grader is enjoying MFW Adventures (Bible, History/Geo, Science) -very fun and hands on for my crafty girl) Horizons math R&S grammar Spelling Workout 6 trait writing D'nealian handwriting/cursive lots of reading and throwing in some lap books for fun
  4. Thank you so much, Julie! Quizlet and outline maps from Google are options I wasn't aware of...and free too!! :001_smile:
  5. Julie, A friend loaned me core 300 to use next year, but I'm trying to figure out how to have my dd do the geography. I'm not too interested in the markable map. I already own a 50x32 world wall map that my younger dd will use for ECC. My IG has the maps with the answers. I'd love to have these without the answers to give my dd something to work with (or something along that line). Another reason is that I really need to limit my purchases.
  6. Would love to hear your ideas if you did something different. We will be using Core 300. Thanks! Julie
  7. I don't know if any of you are still with me, but I'm also wondering how many of you have your child do the time line and mapping activities?
  8. I'm feeling reassured about our decision. Thank you everyone!
  9. My dd enjoys reading and has expressed an interest in using Sonlight because she is looking forward to reading more. My concern revolves around maintaining balance with her academics and not stifling her love of reading because she has to keep pace with the schedule. My dd pointed out that the schedule for the first week lists 7 different titles. This left us both feeling a little intimidated. Getting a head start on the reading during the summer sounds like a great idea!
  10. We will be moving away from the online charter school. When we first moved overseas we took the path of safe and familar since we had never homeschooled before. I am very thankful for the option, but this hasn't been the best fit for my dd. We are taking a step of faith and going independent next year. Still learning to never say never!
  11. I'm considering having my dd use an older version of core 300 for 20th Century History. I'm new to Sonlight. My concern is the amount of required reading during a transition year. I don't want her other subjects to suffer. Is Sonlight Core 300 a good choice for a student who has pretty much followed a public school path until now? It looks like a student could quicky fall behind. I know a lot of people love Sonlight so I'm looking for some insight. FWIW I was considering using Notgrass until a friend gave me Sonlight. Thank you!
  12. I am using Daily 6 Trait Writing with my 2nd grader. One of the reasons I chose it is because my daughter was previously in a ps where they taught 6 trait writing. My dd is a reluctant writer and really enjoys the activities in the workbook. I agree with the PP. It provides good, basic instruction without overwhelming my dd with writing. Here is a link from Timberdoodle to give you a closer look: http://realread.evan...r/9781596732971
  13. I'm needing some help putting together course descriptions. Is there a website I can go to for samples (or does anyone care to share their course descriptions)? I'm particularly interested in seeing how Sonlight's 20th Century World History is broken down into three different courses (bible, history & lit/composition). I don't know if it matters, but I don't have the newer, revised core. Thank you for putting up with my endless questions as I prepare for our first year of homeschooling high school!!!
  14. It looks like my high school plan is changing. I have an opportunity to use Core 300- Modern World History next year. This will be my first year homeschooling high school and my first year with Sonlight. I have the older (2007) IG. As I'm looking through it, I'm wondering how you all break down the course work to assign grades for bible, history/geography and world lit. I will probably add Easy Grammar and Wordly Wise into the English/World lit grade. I still have to look at Analogies 3 to see if I want to include it. I've read in several places about not worrying about doing everything in the guide. I have no idea what to eliminate if I felt the need to trim it down. Just the size of the binder can be intimidating. It makes me wonder if we are biting off more than we can chew. If you've used Core 300, I'd love to hear how you used it ... what did you add or leave out? I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts and suggestions. Thanks so much!
  15. I'm having difficulty placing my daughter in a curriculum for Spanish 2. She is currently using Rosetta Stone which is not an option for next year. A friend recently loaned me Abeka Spanish. I have levels 1 and 2. My thought was to place my dd in level 2. We have viewed the first few lessons and are concerned that there are too many gaps between Rosetta Stone and Abeka. She has not learned grammar and even the Abeka Spanish 1 book appears to have a lot of vocabulary she has not learned. I'm wondering if placing her in Abeka's Spanish 1 would be an appropriate choice for her second year of Spanish. Could this potentially be questionable if I had a college ask for specific course information? It would be helpful if we could use Abeka since we are on a tight budget, but it's not worth having my dd struggle all year. What do think?
  16. FWIW, my daughter also preferred the conversational style of Notgrass. I don't have experience with either BJU or Notgrass, but reviewed the samples with my dd to make world history curric plans for next year.
  17. I plan to add Easy Grammar and a couple Progeny Press guides to count as a full English credit. I also plan to have my dd work on a research paper of sorts, but will probably tie that into the history credit.
  18. MorningGlory, Are you referring to the required literature package in your statement that Notgrass includes lots of primary source readings?
  19. How crucial are the timeline figures and notebook? I'm trying to piece together WHL and need to economize, but I don't want to skip out on any essential components. Thanks!
