  1. I'd like to begin some decorating today if I can get the house cleaned. Hopefully we'll get started today, or perhaps tomorrow (tree included).
  2. My little boy just turned two and we have another one on the way. I was homeschooled and have planned on homeschooling my own children. I always feel a little "funny" on the boards because mine is still so young and we aren't "officially" homeschooling yet. So I'm glad to see I'm not the only one here. :001_smile: My ds is just having fun with letters, numbers, lots of library books, etc. I'm busy reading, planning, and preparing for/about our future in homeschooling.
  3. ;) You must be in Ohio or thereabout. My husband lived there for a while and discovered that everyone there makes their "noodles". I (being a southern girl) had never heard of this tradition--I couldn't imagine what they did with these "noodles". I had only eaten noodles under spaghetti sauce or in a casserole. One day I'll have to try these special noodles.
  4. I agree with trying Ebay--you should def. be able to make some money off of them!
  5. Wow, this is tough. Just off the top of my head... I agree with To Kill a Mockingbird The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom any Jane Austen novel Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis I saw where someone mentioned A Severe Mercy--I wouldn't have thought to list that one, but having been reminded of it--this is a great suggestion--very moving. I'll probably think of others (maybe better ones) as soon as I hit "submit".
  6. Actually, you were sort of right as well. Elisabeth Elliot wrote Through Gates of Splendor (sometime before the biography) to tell the story of the missionaries who went to the Auca Indians (followed by the sequel Beyond Gates of Splendor)--also great books. I really loved Shadow of the Almighty though, as it was more in depth in telling the story of his life and what lead to the incident with the Aucas.
  7. I like Jordan Rubin's Garden of Life vitamins and products. We use some of the vitamins (sometimes) and some of the green powders. It is all pretty expensive though, so we don't take any of it consistently right now. I don't know much about the children's vitamins. I just bought some of the Animal Parade children's vitamins, but I couldn't really tell you how they compare to anything else.
  8. LOVED Shadow of the Almighty: the Life and Testament of Jim Elliot by Elisabeth Elliot. Peace Child by Don Richardson was interesting. From Jerusalem to Irian Jaya A Biographical History of Christian Missions by Ruth A. Tucker is supposed to be great for reference. I haven't read it all, but it may give you a great starting point to find people you'd like to read about further. It takes you through a timeline of missionaries beginning with the time of the New Testament.
  9. livingmath.net has some great reader lists that are easy to find at the library (if you go). It can be just a fun way to delve into "math" in a different sort of way and fill in the gaps of textbooks.
  10. That is disgusting and hilarious! I have yet another reason to be happy that I had no part whatsoever in the 70's!
  11. I like to have fall/Thanksgiving decorations up for Thanksgiving, but as soon as that is over I decorate for Christmas (usually on the weekend just following Thanksgiving--but sometimes a little later if we have stuff going on.)
  12. My parents have been doing this for the last couple/few years. Some trees were easier to work with than others, but it always worked out well. I don't remember the process they go through to acclimate it, or how long they keep it indoors, etc. I also know a family who has done this for years--they have quite a collection of "Christmas trees" planted on their land now.
  13. Ah yes, reading the list brings back memories of little children reading to me (some older than 5)--some frustrating times for the reader and the one being read to. ;) Learning to read can be tough and it's a big step in a child's life. I think just taking it slowly and gently and being consistent will eventually bring progress. There is plenty of time.
  14. Well this isn't very helpful, and it doesn't really "teach" ancients in any way, but I just stumbled onto a cute book at the library: Ten Little Mummies by Philip Yates. It is cute and great for that age group. Also, check the juvenile art section of the library--I saw a few great books with pictures about the pyramids, ancient art and architecture, etc. (sorry, can't remember any titles at the moment). Good luck!
  15. ~Removing the drawer under the oven and cleaning the floor underneath. (May actually take less than 15 min.) ~Dusting off the bathroom light fixtures over the sink. We have 9 ft. ceilings and the fixtures are kind of high. (That's my excuse anyway.;))
  16. Please keep us posted on how it goes. I too have a confirmation . They sent an email saying they made a price mistake on the website and could not fulfill my order--but that if I still want to purchase, I could, for $239. I thought it was too good to be true when I ordered, so I've been expecting an email from them today. ;)
  17. I just ordered two--one possibly for me and one to sell on Ebay.:001_smile: I hope they have enough to fulfill the order.
  18. I don't have an answer to your question, but I wanted to say "welcome". :001_smile:
  19. I do keep some around here. I like the real stuff too, but we use so little of it at a time, that it is hard to buy it and then have to throw it out before it gets eaten--waste of money. I buy the real stuff sometimes (like if I'm making lasagna), but that Kraft is handy as it will keep for a very long time. ;)
  20. Would it be at all possible to get a sitter for the other children and bring your DH along? Maybe an outing with Mom and Dad would help you DH feel better about it? Just a thought... ETA: I think I can see how your husband would have a (perhaps unidentifiable?) "strange" feeling about it, but I don't think it's "weird". Having come from a very large family, I can certainly relate to wanting to have alone time with the parents--I enjoyed a lot of outings with my Dad growing up. I certainly wouldn't take the whole family--that would totally defeat the purpose you son seems to have in mind.
  21. My birthday is Dec. 27th, my brother's is the 28th. I've never minded the fact that my birthday was always mixed in with all the Christmas/New Year stuff. It's all I've ever known, so it's "normal" to me. ;) I love Christmas and Christmas decorations, and my birthday thrown in is just another fun thing. Growing up, my Mom always tried to keep some seperation between our birthdays and Christmas (like not using the leftover Christmas paper to wrap our gifts, etc.)--that being said, the Christmas decorations are usually in the background somewhere. I like to decorate the weekend after (of?) Thanksgiving--it's my tradition--so I'd do whatever you want for Christmas (as a seperate event). And then do what you would normally do for a birthday on top of that on the appropriate day. :001_smile:
