  1. But then everyone would come pick it clean and the poor thing would die. :( Maybe everyone should go look for their own money tree. And I recommend shaking it, rather than picking it. ;)
  2. Not necessarily. It isn't until the child is at least at the age of reason (7 or 8). And even once they've achieved the age of reason, there must be wilful intention (mens rea) and a deliberate violation of the Law which they've been properly formed in.
  3. LOL! Poor guy. They do make costume bald caps with a tonsure in the "corona" style. Tonsure can actually be done two ways. One is knows as the corona, that's the bald pate that most are familiar with. The other is to remove five locks of hair from the head in the form of a cross. If you want, I can post links to pictures of monks today who sport the corona, if it might help him feel better. Poor guy.
  4. I'm always in black and white at funerals, because I'm usually vested in cassock and surplice. :D So long as the priest, deacon, and subdeacon are vested in black, I don't care what is worn to my funeral.
  5. Yep. That's the back of my head. I'm doffing my fedora as I enter a church in Rome. There are actually pictures of me on the board, including my face. Peek A Boo took them when we met IRL a few months ago. Look for her Trading Card post in the Gen Board archives.

  6. Us DFW-area folk need to get together...
  7. Our oldest is very excited to be a Knight this year. I'm not sure what the other two are going as. Middle son will probably just pull his costume off, so we may not bother. The youngest, since he's walking, will probably be a U.S. Marine.
  8. New Orleans -- loved it, but since Katrina there's even less of an economy to support a family on than there was when I left for college in the mid-1990s Philadelphia, PA -- I was there for 6 miserable years. Filthy, unfriendly, nasty weather...need I go on? Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex -- I've been here for most of the last 13 years. Moved here for college; settled here to raise my family. Good economy, tolerable weather. Lubbock, TX -- spent 18 months in grad school. There are a few things I'd go back to visit, but I never want to live there again. Flat, dusty, boring, dusty...did I mention dusty? Largest settlement for 600 miles and I'm a city boy. Need any more be said? Rome, Italy -- I lived here for about 6 months. I'd move back in a heartbeat if I could afford it. Someday...
  9. Just in case some of you haven't seen it, we do have a social group for people who enjoy playing games, especially with their children. The Gamers' Table Come join us to talk about games.
  10. Not this year, for either of us. Next year, perhaps. :(
  11. We love the hardwood in our bedroom. The previous owners put hardwood in all the rooms except the kitchen, which they tiled. My only caveat is that hardwoods and bathrooms never mix. Ever. Period. Use tile if the floor is likely to get wet.
  12. I don't know if you'll find it on the Web, but see if your library had a copy of the Osprey book on the Thirty Years War. Osprey has been the gold standard for such information among wargamers for longer than I've been alive.
  13. Our Bosch is 1 year old and we've had no problems with it. I'm not sure what you mean by "unreliable". This thing cleans everything, cleans it well, and no one can tell when it is running if you can't see the LED display that counts down the minutes until it is done.
  14. Audrey, Good luck. I'm not sure that such a thing exists, for fairly obvious reasons. If I run across anything, I'll let you know, but most of the texts that treat the Christian story as mythology came out of 19th century, German, liberal Protestant, Biblical exegesis -- and even they were only presenting a demythologized Christianity in an effort to make it palatable to the perceived prejudices of their Modernist contemporaries (akin to Thomas Jefferson's infamous project). I certainly don't know of anything that would be palatable in a Pagan household, appropriate for children or, ideally in your situation, both. Sorry I can't be of more help.
  15. At least with Latin, that is part of the brilliance of demanding oral explanation of all the relevant grammar. If you've cheated, you might be able to recall the translation, but you won't be able to explain it. If you can explain it, and you cheated, I must confess that my reaction is "so what". If he knows the material, move on. The goal is to get them to master the material. Now, if you caught him in the act of cheating...that is a different story entirely. But under the circumstances you've outlined, if he can orally defend the Latin homework he's submitted, you have only your suspicion to act upon. That's not enough, IMO.
  16. The old Jesuit who taught me Latin would always follow any suspicion of cheating with a sudden demand for oral recitation, translation, and exegesis. He would look over the document and then ask the student to explain the grammar of several of the sentences without reference materials. Generally, it became painfully obvious whether or not the student had cheated. In this way the wrong was exposed, the culprit humiliated, and no one had to bother with more punitive measures. Cheating is its own punishment. And I agree that 30 lines is too much even for a college student. Grad student, no...but they should already know the language. ;) HTH
  17. 1300 sq ft 3 bedrooms, but we have turned one into an office and my f-i-l lives in the third. So all five of us (me, wife, & three kids) are in one bedroom. And while we do have two baths in the house, only one of them works for showering. So three adults, three kids, one shower/bath combo. It gets fun. And, for a while, my brother was living with us this past summer, too. So it was 4 adults, 3 kids for about 12 weeks. It can be done. It helps that we have a garage and a large yard. It also helps that my wife and I have become very good at getting rid of "stuff". We purge our possessions about once every quarter.
  18. No clue. My wife is sick, so I might have to do some kitchen alchemy this week. Last night was take out. Tonight is Costco rotisserie chicken with as-yet-unknown sides. The rest of the week we'll play by ear. Sorry I'm not of any help. :(
  19. Thanks. I'll have to read it when I have a few more minutes of leisure. :)
