  1. Are you sure nothing else is going on that is causing such anger? I know when I was a teenager, I lashed out at my siblings because they were easy targets. Looking back, my issues had nothing to do with them. I think if my parents would have tried to reach my heart and not just correct by behavior, it would have helped tremendously. Not to say you haven't tried, just pulling from my own experience. Probing questions to figure out the why might help the situation. Then again, he may have no idea why he feels the way he does. Hormones can be a tricky thing!
  2. I know your question was about a book, but thought I would mention MUS website has a worksheet generator that allows you to put in exactly what facts you want to practice. It will print one page of problems and generate a new set of problems if you print again. It's all free!
  3. Hilton Head Fripp Island Isle of Palms Tybee Island Pawley's island Kiawah island Hunting Island State park (if you're into camping or cabins) I've lived in SC my entire life and all these places are great! Fripp is most expensive but an absolute must see and the absolute best family non commercialized vacation you'll ever take!
  4. How do you do this? Is there a book? I see it mentioned on here but not sure if it's a specific curriculum or what?
  5. Someone once posted a trick for b and d reversals that my boys just love and think is hilarious. Now they don't forget. b- is a person with a fat belly (b-belly) d- is a baby with a dirty diaper (d- diaper)
  6. My son at 2 1/2 ate one bite of mixed nuts. He told us a few minutes later that his tongue burned. He did not break out in hives until hours later and then it was on and off for two days. He also vomitted in the middle of the night. Had skin test next day and cashew was the culprit. We were told to stay away from all nuts for cross contamination reasons. Also, the allergist explained the first or even second reaction will be the mildest. It's that third exposure that can be life threatening. So I would take dc to allergist for peace of mind and get epi-pen if necessary.
  7. My ds5 was the same way starting out this year. I only made him do one page per day in ETC 1. Some days require no writing, just matching. He has grown leaps and bounds since August and can now do mulitple pages per day. I will say time on the white board got him enjoying writing. I would just write a few letters and have him copy each one. Really worked! So, another thought might be to put the ETC page in a sheet protector and let her use dry erase markers to answer.
  8. We do only 1 sport per season per child. With the exception of golf. My oldest loves golf and does a winter golf tour on Sunday afternoons that never coincide with other sports. DS8 Spring/Fall: Baseball Winter: Basketball & Golf Summer: Golf Year around: Piano DS5 Spring: Baseball Fall: Soccer Winter: Basketball Summer: Golf :auto: I am on the go....go....go However, that is why I love to homeschool. My kids are not exhausted from being in school for 7hrs and can enjoy being involved in all sorts of activities.
  9. For what it's worth, I have never used the teacher guide. Maybe a little for K, but not 1st or 2nd.
  10. And ordered AAS 1 and 2. The Hive finally convinced me to give this program a try! Now, my next adventure is going to be Essentials in Writing!:auto:
  11. Personally, I would move on and just keep practicing the facts. MUS said to do the same thing but I didn't. Only because my son can get the answer quickly by adding in his head and he has done fine. I felt like i shouldn't hold him back when I know he at least knows the process. I know I learned them by just doing it over and over. I was never officially taught addition facts, only multiplication. Again, only my opinion. Others using singapore may have a better idea!
  12. I use SS1 with my 2nd grader. It took us a while to really get into it and about half way through book something clicked for ds. He actually likes it. The only thing I don't like is there are no spelling rules. Child is expected to just "see" patterns in their spelling. They correct mistakes after each word is written. I'm just still on the fence about it. I know that is no help to you. Really considering AAS due to all the great comments on this forum.
  13. :iagree: It was not done in one sitting. We just left it on the computer and took an hour break. Then came back to it. You are so right! There is no 8 year old boy able to sit that long. Even with the break he was spent when it was all over. Mind you, he reads slowly!!
  14. http://www.cathyduffyreviews.com/grammar-composition/Essentials-in-Writing.htm Don't think this will really answer your grammar question but she does mention it in review. I'm still considering program. My concern is if I wait until ds is in 3rd grade, Will FFL2 have him prepared for the grammar part of this program or should I hold back a year?
  15. Is it your 4th or 2nd grader? My ds is in 2nd grade and doesn't do well with worksheets. If I sit with him and keep him focused on where answer are written he does great. If I walk away, well.....I think you know! He just seems to constantly lose his place and write answers in the wrong blanks. I still make him do it because I think it's good practice and is a skill to learn. Especially keeping your place. Just think about all the forms we fill out in dr. Offices.:D. Anyway, I do think some kids are wired for worksheets and others not. Maybe limit the amount and just not have them for too many subjects.
  16. http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index3.aspx?id=2147486091&menu_id=793 I had to download a program to run it but it was very easy and straightforward. Instructions are clear on steps to take. The test was the grade 2 TELPASS Reading. he took the test online and then it scored it for me right away. It has an answer key where you can see all questions missed and also Raw score conversion table. Categories are not broken down by grade level but beginner, intermediate, Advanced, advanced high. I have been bragging on him all day to Dad and grandparents. He's really puffed up right now! I think we struggle so much and he senses my frustration. I'm hoping this new found confidence will actually help his reading soar and get him over the fluency hump! Wish you all the best as well!
  17. Yes you are right. It had all levels of abilities. I guess this whole time I've thought he was behind and struggling. I get discouraged hearing everyone on here say their child is reading at a such and such level at 5 years old. I bought into the fact that something must be wrong. This test has really encouraged me today that if he were put in a ps tomorrow, they might consider him above average. As a homeschooler, I think we all struggle with wondering if our dc is keeping up and if we're doing an okay job. At least I know I struggle! What is funny is my first thought was "Is this test even legitimate"? I will go to bed tonight at peace with where my Ds son is and continue to work on his weaknesses.
  18. After reading a thread earlier about standardized testing, I decided to give my ds8 a reading one. It was the test from Texas public schools. Anyway, my son reads okay but not chapter books and his fluency is yet to be desired. He struggles with simple words yet figures out difficult ones (sometimes). It took him 2 1/2 hours to take test, there was no time limit. He was completely exhausted when done because lots of stories to read and questions to answer. He did the test solo without my help. I sat in on some of it as he read aloud. I noticed he would skip words he didn't know or say something completely wrong but still got answers right. So with all that said, the score came out to 705. The highest score was 670 or higher is Advanced High. I can not even believe it. Out of 49 questions, he got 43 correct. How can this be without fluency? Does 2nd grade just have low expectations for reading? It wasn't super easy. I truly thought he would fall somewhere in the average range. I just don't know how to take this information....can you tell?:tongue_smilie:
  19. SS has a DVD version that I believe would be independent. http://www.avko.org/ssdvd.html I use the workbook for my ds because he needs all the handwriting practice he can get!
  20. http://www.freehomeschooling101.com/search/label/FREE%20ASSESSMENT%20TESTING This is a site dedicated to everything free for homeschoolers. May find some useful links on testing.
