:iagree: I was just saying to DH last night that I may never set foot in their store again.

I usually have my kids write whatever they find interesting. They can write it while I'm reading. Sometimes, I even say "I think this is a very fascinating fact. Maybe you should write it in your notebook." :D

American Girl Magazine? Any subscribers?
TrulySusan replied to tammyw's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My DD gets it. I like it a lot. Usually there are good age-appropriate articles on etiquitte, a short story, fun recipes/crafts/games, and no ads. Also a pull out section with poster, coloring sheet, cards, or something similar. She is 11 now but has enjoyed it since about age 9. -
I asked about BJU but I do already know of 1 possible discount. I saw on Facebook that last year in August, they offered tax free to participating states and 10% off to anyone who was not in a state doing the back to school tax free weekend. If I do buy BJU, I will be waiting for August to see if they run this offer again. Some other discounts I have seen: *Math Mammoth notifies of sales via email *Christianbook has the lowest price on Saxon math that I have found *Supercharged science offers discounts if you watch one of the free science classes offered by Aurora Lipper *Mr. Q seems to have a once a year sale in January (50% off) I am looking to buy gently used where possible, but I want to be prepared to buy new at the best price if necessary.

I'm specifically wondering about MCT and the BJU distance learning kits. Do either of these ever go on sale? (I know BJU had a sale at Christmas but we need a full year). I won't need them until next school year, so I have plenty of time to wait. This is our first year homeschooling, so I don't know which companies are likely to offer promos, free shipping, group buys at HSBC, etc. Please comment about other curriculum as well; I change my mind constantly! If you can, list the time of year you were able to get a discount and what kind of discount it was: % off, free shipping, etc. Also, if you follow on Facebook or receive emails, do any companies offer anything at a discount?

Are ceiling fans out of style?
TrulySusan replied to Ginevra's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Ceiling fans are always in style if it gets hot where you live! However, ours are way out of style-white with gold trim.:blushing: New, "cool" ceiling fans are on DHs to-do list for next month! -
Do you plan to stay in this house a long time? Because, when your sons are older, they will not want to all be in 1 room. Personally, I wouldn't give up a bedroom.

Pen Pal (ink mail best) sources?

I sent you a PM.:001_smile: -
Jean, I'm surprised by those responses. I know when I was a teen, I had 4 permanent teeth + wisdom teeth pulled because of overcrowding. I think back then that was a common treatment. It probably depends on the cause of the crowding. I did require braces in addition to having the teeth pulled. I wouldn't go by what a receptionist thinks; she isn't likely to know all the options the orthodontist may suggest. I will be interested in this thread: I forsee this problem in my DCs' near futures.

My DC suggested that they would be willing to forgo their math lessons since, "you know, you shouldn't have to teach the day before your birthday."

Birth control pills worsened my migraines to the point I had to quit taking them. That may be the culprit in your DD's case. She should ask her doctor.

Cheap Spiral Notebooks in Jan?
TrulySusan replied to Renaissance Mom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Try the Dollar Store. Or, ask the children to each bring a spiral notebook to class -
When DS was in 1st grade in PS, he had a robot obsession. Every day, despite the teacher's prompt, he would manage to route the journal entry back to his beloved robots. Some I can recall: "I love robots." "I am special because I love robots and most kids don't love robots." "Johnny Appleseed planted apple trees and I love robots." His teacher even started emailing me robot Christmas ideas for him! So, don't be surprised if indeed you do have many entries about Star Wars and hockey!

My kids do a field trip journal to record our special outings. Then, we go back and add a photo from the day. Otherwise, no. They complain about doing just the field trip entries (about 1/month). Our PS, which they attended until earlier this year, required a daily journal entry and those notebooks are some of my most treasured possesions. In case you are interested, they were usually begun with a prompt from the teacher and finished by the child.

Public School related question
TrulySusan replied to Slipper's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I am in Alabama and this is what I was going to say. Mail a letter to the superintendant yourself-don't rely on your PS or cover school to do it for you. I sent ours certified because I'm weird that way. Also, we got the automated calls for 2-3 days. -
Cheaper Way to get Disney Park Passes?
TrulySusan replied to MamaBearTeacher's topic in General Education Discussion Board
It may depend on when you go. I know during their homeschool days in Jan/Feb the website shows tickets available for individual families. We are new to homeschooling this year, so I haven't personally gone to Disney this way, but we are looking into it for next year. -
Cheaper Way to get Disney Park Passes?
TrulySusan replied to MamaBearTeacher's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Undercovertourist is legit and has good prices. If you sign up for the mousesavers.com newsletter, they email a discount code each month that will save you a little extra off the regular discounted undercovertourist price. Our family personally used this company for our tickets and had no trouble at all. The way to save the most is to get tickets through Disney's homeschool YES program. They are discounted for everyone in your party but your kids will have to take a class one of your days at Disney.
