  1. I wil definitely check out Visual Link Spanish. Gracias Elena!
  2. For Little Nyssa & her baby in heaven.... Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with Thee, blessed art thou amongst women & blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus, Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now & at the hour of our death, Amen.
  3. Hello! We live in Tonkawa, Ok. This is my 2nd year of hs & I think we are succeeding (on many days anyway)! LOL I noticed nobody has posted here since Aug but I thought I would say HELLO anyway.
  4. I'm a natural speller also, so I feel your pain. I'm going to try SpellingCity.com. It is free, although you can get a premium account for a fee. Someone here suggested that I try the free account first and if it meets our needs then no premium account needed. I won't lose anything by trying it. I was surprised that the local Catholic school uses it and the kids love it. Just my 2 cents. Best wishes to you.
  5. My dd 13 was bored to tears with Teaching Textbooks, I think because it is a spiral method. About a 2 weeks ago, she started MUS fractions which is a mastery program & is really enjoying it. Before then, she would do 1 lesson of TT & 10 min of Aleks...maybe it was too much spiral for her & she got burned out..idk. Anyway, any thoughts if MUS & Aleks could be done together since they are different methods? Anybody think this may confuse her? MUS is different than what she's used to but its working for her. She needs to finish MUS fractions & decimals before starting pre-algebra in the fall. Thank you! :)
  6. I'm bi-lingual and my 9 yr old ds shows a very strong interest in learning Spanish. I'm not really sure how to start besides talking to him in Spanish. Should I use a curriculum? Suggestions anyone? Thank you.
  7. I know this is an old post but it was started by me exactly a year ago. What's interesting is the same daughter is now 13 and is recently giving me a hard time and fighting me on doing school work. I see a pattern...something about February, I guess lol. I noticed others getting the blues during this month. We just got back from a month long break in December and still didn't help. However, we are working through it and we will be ok. :)
  8. I think you have listed the major ones that self-grade and self-teach that are Christian. Time4Learning is self-graded and self-teaching and although secular I have not found anything offensive. They have a forum section dedicated to Christian homeschoolers. Best wishes.
  9. So they do get harder. Ok, then maybe I should have her do the latter lessons. This helped. Thank you guys!
  10. My 7th grader just started MUS Epsilon. She's moving at a good pace. However, I'm not sure how many I should let her miss before letting her move on or skip lesson practice pages. I have heard repeatedly if student shows mastery to let the student move on. For example, today she did lesson practice: 4A front & back 4A front & back She missed two problems only & she went back & corrected them. Should I make her do 4C & 4D? Is missing two problems showing mastery of the lesson? Thank you. *****oops. I meant 4A and 4B. Lol. Ty
  11. I have to say that I really love this thread. I feel scattered & unfocused a lot and very very disorganized. No matter how hard I try, it works temporarily. I blame it on working full-time from home and every time I feel like such a failure. I have wondered how Moms diagnosed with ADD can cope with homeschooling. I have even googled it but found nothing but I found millions of articles on ADD children & homeschooling. I want to follow a classical education only but I just can't get there...I have to rely on computers to homeschool the kids. I console myself with "They're better off at home & they're definitely much happier than at brick and mortar school." Thanks for starting this thread, it is extremely helpful. I'm going to try to incorporate some of the coping mechanisms. Thanks again.
  12. We are doing the audio cd and I ordered the activity guide today. I use it for my 7 and 9 yr old but my 13 yr old loves to listen in. Lol.
  13. Please suggest to me an open and go copywork workbook for 2nd through 4th. Print and cursive. Somewhere I read about one where there's passages of great literature to copy and blank lines to write all on the same page. I didn't bookmark it. Darn. Thanks.
  14. DS #1, age 22: PS all his life, was the most socially awkward and shy. PS did NOT help him evolve his social graces....made it worse. Fast forward 3 yrs, has a satisfying and successful Army career and he and his wife are expecting their first baby. Being OUT of ps helped him socially. DD #1, age 13: PS preK-3rd grade; Catholic School 4th- 5th grade; HS 6th-7th. Has good social skills but is very reserved and has to warm up to others before she will make friends. DS #2 age 9: prek in PS; K - 1st Catholic School; 2nd and 3rd HS. DD #2 age 7: prek and K Catholic School; 1st and 2nd HS. Throw the last 2 kids in a mix of any type of group anywhere and they will make friends with anybody and everybody. Neither are afraid to ask questions to adults. They have fantastic social skills. My observation, the longer my kids were in a brick and mortar school the less social graces they acquired.
  15. The Nancy Larson Science looks extremely promising for us. I despise trying to gather experiment materials. Thank you!
  16. Thanks for starting this thread. :lurk5:
  17. You have very good intentions, God bless you for that. But, she may not want to participate and is having a hard time saying no to you and thinks she may hurt your feelings. Maybe she already knows that the teaching styles won't mesh & doesn't want to strain the relationship. Another thought...because she knows the teaching styles are different and there's so many different ways of learning, she may not share with you how much her kids are actually learning & is purposely being vague & cryptic....maybe she's afraid of being judged. I'm a little bit that way, when I'm asked about my homeschooling methods & curriculum by other Moms in the local homeschool group, I don't really want to share with "certain" individuals because they just want to compare their family to mine so I'm very vague and say that we use a mixture of different things then change the topic. I usually see them during our basketball games, so it is very easy to divert the attention back to the game. I have read my share of unschooling books and have known an unschooling family which have done great. Maybe, just maybe, her kids will still excel in spite of. They may still be better off at home "unschooling" than at the local ps. :o Maybe you can just let her know that you are there to help if she ever wants it. Then go & have some fun time at the park with her and the kids. Just my 2 cents ;) Best wishes to you.
  18. I purchased the cd three days ago & used it for the first time today. I made photocopies of the chapter so they could read along with the audio if they wanted. Right off the bat, my 13 yr old chose not to. The 9 & 7 yr old did use it, at first. But they were having a hard time keeping up with Jim's reading so I gave them the option & they both ditched it. Before purchasing the audio, while reading it outloud to them, I would spend most of the time stopping & re-starting because they were wiggly or touching each other & irritating each other during my reading. Now, with Jim dong the reading, I can sit with them & monitor & also enjoy the story. I kept the cd player next to me so I can pause & ask them questions & have them narrate back to me. It worked out very very very well! And we watched a Magic School Bus video on volcanoes & everyone made their own volcanoes. Mission accomplished today! Today has been the best homeschool day in a looooooong time. :)
