I did it. AGAIN. I opened the Sonlight catalog.

There's workbooks in CHC? Lol! I know there is and sometimes we do them. We read their books and discuss. Someone suggested to just read the Sonlight books without any pressure. I agree! The difference with CHC is it is Catholic & it is nice to hear about the Saints, rosaries, Priests, etc. Good luck! I hope you find something that works for your family. :) -

I hear you!! We live in a rural part & our internet is horrible....I totally understand where you are coming from. Youtube buffers...everything buffers. Sooo frustrating! I am always in search of asynchronous classes because of the same exact reasons you listed. Time4Writing is asynchronous & my 7th grader uses them. She really likes them & they have classes through high school. I have heard of Bravewriter online & have read good reviews on them. We are planning on using them next year. Good luck!

First of all, congratulations and welcome home to Rome! Have you looked at Catholic Heritage Curriculum? It is authentically Catholic & it is very similar to Sonlight. My 9 & 7 year old use it and they love it and I love it because I don't have to worry about filtering through it for something that's not quite in line with the Catholic Faith..I don't have time to be doing that! It is very gentle, some say it is too "light" but it really isn't. My kids have learned a lot & I don't risk burnout...believe me, I have been there & I have only been doing this 2 1/2 years. I am a member of the Yahoo group Catholic Sonlight, but honestly, I don't have the time to look up the old files of what to filter out..I work full-time & I just don't have the time. There are two catalogs that I keep and look through all the time, yep you guessed it: Sonlight & CHC! CHC's catalog is so beautiful...it is like eye candy! LOVE IT! They are super nice & will answer any questions. Their online catalog is exactly the same, I have a paper one that I love to curl up with. Lol! Good luck! :) -

Bumping myself.... -
I'm interested in reading a book about recognizing the learning styles of my kids. Anyone recommend some good ones? Thanks.

Wow, this is weird. I just logged on to The Hive to ask a very similar question. My dd is finishing Teaching Textbooks 7 but she did some of MUS Epsilon. I asked her, for 8th grade pre-algebra which curriculum she wants, MUS, TT, or Saxon (she's done all 3) and she said MUS. :lurk5:

Good info! Thanks!

I'm going to look into this. Thanks! -
We live in a rural area so we only have two choices: AT&T DSL and satellite. I have both and they're always loading, I have the fastest plans available but still too slow, i have called the companies but theres nothing more they can do. Anybody use video curriculum and are happy with it? I would prefer a Catholic curriculum but open to ideas. Thanks everyone.

I always hear "I could never do what you do, I would go crazy, I don't have the patience, it must be so hard....blah blah blah". And I really don't think they are trying to be mean or insensitive. BUT depending on who is asking will determine what kind of reply I provide. An acquaintance usually gets: "I use to think like you but it's been a good choice for our family. Gosh, I cold never do what YOU do... mandatory teacher meetings, helping cranky kids with homework until 9 pm, endless fund raisers, meeting someone else's schedule and demands, volunteering at the school, teacher's notes, school getting my kids' best hours of the day...it is all hard but it's about choosing your "hard". And I'm saying it with a gentle voice and wearing a smile then "Let's go kids!" and move on. ;) After some old guy (a total stranger) at McDonald's tried to debate me on homeschooling, I decided a total stranger gets: "It has been a great choice for our family. Have a nice day." I'm not going to debate a stranger and exhaust myself for nothing and it gives my children an example on how to tactfully deal with a sticky situation. Unless, I get the sense that a person is honestly asking and is respectful then I will take the time to share a little more general information. I read an article of a veteran homeschooling Mom who handled it the same way and I took her advice.

Fourcatmom: I added a couple of more comments to my previous post. Btw, the wise ladies on The Hive suggested CLE to me when I started homeschooling. I'm glad I tried it. I hope someone with RS experience chimes in. Good luck!

I know you are asking specifically about RS, which I know nothing about but I'm responding because you said you want to work with her but want a program that will tell you what to teach her (a scripted program). CLE will tell you exactly what you need to say to her, it is inexpensive, and it is normally a grade level above what the workbook says. It is a spiral program like TT and It is a workbook, so she wouldn't have to re-write any of the problems. My 13 yr old dd and my 9 yr old ds use TT. My 8 yr old dd uses CLE and the scripted part of it was great for me. My 13 dd gets tired and bored of TT and I think it's because of the spiral method. I give her a break from it and have her do Aleks for a week and/or MUS. Then she's fine with going back to TT. We just started doing this and it has worked so far.
