  1. Wow! This is a tough one. Maybe if prison terms were truly enforced and prison life was not so comfortable prison would be enough of a deterent. I have friends who work at the prison where the inmates have t.v., weight rooms, libraries, free medical, free education, computer labs; I know law-abiding citizens who don't have it so good. I have worked with children at risk and had them speak with inmates at the local prison. Do you know what their advise was for the children? "If you are going to do a crime, make it a big one because prison is easy and city jail sucks, nothing to do but just sit in a cell." I vote to let them colonize the moon. OK, maybe an island or Antarctica :001_smile:
  2. I believe in miracles! The Dr. advised me to terminate my first pregnancy for medical reasons. I delivered a beautiful ds who now has 2 ds of his own. My second pregnancy I was told to "accept" that I would never be able to carry long enough. I delivered a beautiful dd (OK, a month early but no lasting problems) who now has 3 dc of her own. Keep your faith strong and know that you are in the prayers of many:grouphug:
  3. I used to use a bread machine, but have gone back to making it from scratch. It is so much tastier and dd and I enjoy our baking time together.
  4. We school year round and dd is required to be outside a majority of the day after her school work and chores are finished. No tv, computer, or video games, just lots of fresh air and exercise (we live on a mountain). If it is too hot to play she curls up in the swing on the front porch with a book or does art stuff.
  5. Do you assign a grade for the work completed? If so, how do you access a grade? I have to turn in grades twice a year. My dd completes all work neatly and accurately, although is unsure about the creative writing part as this is something new for her.
  6. We haven't "read" the series yet, but have listened to the cd's. Both dc (8 and 9) loved listening to it. My dd had looked at the first book at the bookstore and really wanted it. Normally I don't buy cd's but at $10 a book X 5 books I decided we deserved a treat!
  7. I voted "as many as you are blessed with", but only if you are able to take care of them yourself, without asking for outside help. If you have what it takes financially and emotionally, then I think the more the merrier! I have issues with people who have children and then expect others to be responsible for them.
  8. I could be wrong, but, I believe the typical September through June school year was because of our agricultural needs...kids needed to be home to help on the farm during the summer. We began our homeschool in August and now just keep going. When we finish a subject or level we just move on.
  9. I had never thought of letting my 8 yo dd choose her own copywork. What a great idea! She keeps a journal and loves to read so this would help to keep her from writing about the same old stuff over and over.
  10. :iagree: Our dd was in 3rd grade also when we began hs'ing. Since we plan on hs'ing year round we just started at the beginning of SOTW and will keep it going, hopefully catching up at some point. This has rapidly became dd's favorite subject so shouldn't be a problem. Like you, we have learned so much more than dd would have learned in ps.
  11. I just finished up our first year of hs'ing my dd (3rd grade). I am some what of a control nut, so probably go in the opposite direction from you:001_smile: I look at my curriculum and get a general idea of how many assignments need to be done weekly in order to finish by the end of the year, then use a homeschool teachers planner to plan out at least 2 weeks of assignments in advance. I used to plan further ahead, but found that dd works at her own speed which changes often. This keeps us more or less on track and still leaves room for flexibility.
  12. Neat site! Thanks for sharing.
  13. We use an unbrella school and send in a list of curriculum we plan on using. This does not have to be approved and we are free to make changes as necessary. I think they just want to make sure we have some kind of a plan.
  14. oops, left out Florida between Mississippi and Oklahoma.
  15. Born in California, moved to Arizona, followed by Texas, Oregon, Washington, Ohio, Mississippi, Oklahoma, back to Ohio, and finally have put down roots in Tennessee.
  16. My dd participated in this program last year and we made a big production out of going to Barnes and Noble to pick out her book. She was so excited to take her form up to the cashier. They had a pretty good selection, including some spanish books.
  17. One year ago we were just beginning the adoption process of our dd. Now it is all final and we are happily beginning our 2nd family, having already raised 3wonderful children (who have blessed us with 7 grandchildren).
  18. One dd age 5 and one dd age 3. Something they both wanted and were very good at taking care of themselves.
  19. My dd (grown with dc of her own) has read these and enjoyed them.
  20. SOTW definately! My dd and dgs have developed such a real love for history using this curriculum.
