  1. Our dd (8) started going to overnight camp (Girl Scouts for 3 nights) when she was 5. Now she attends a week long camp every summer at a Christian camp which our church supports. She goes with all of her friends from church and has a wonderful time. I think we both enjoy the break we get from each other. She is always excited to go, and just as excited to be home again.
  2. Have lived in, but too young to remember: Arizona and Texas And then: Oregon Washington Ohio Mississippi Florida Oklahoma Iowa Ohio (again) Tennessee
  3. We discussed mythology and all the gods the Romans and Greeks believed in with our dd (8) during SOTW. She had no trouble understanding the difference between what they believed in vs what our beliefs are, commenting often on how their beliefs sounded more like fairy tales. Beliefs are such a big part of any culture, just look a the Middle East.
  4. Am I missing something, or didn't Julia tell Sun when she did the ultrasound that as long as she was already pregnant when she came to the island she would be alright? Now she is telling her she has to leave the island or die? And wasn't that Jin buying the panda and rushing to the hospital, and now he is dead? I'm Lost:confused:
  5. This is our first year of homeschooling dd (3rd grade). We began at the beginning with SOTW and it is working out wonderfully. Since we plan to hs year round, I don't think we will be all that far behind...eventually:). I would definately vote for starting with SOTW 1.
  6. Not sure where I fit in. Although dh is very supportive and in complete agreement with homeschooling our dd, his involvement consists of discussing over dinner what was learned (usually sotw since history is everyones favorite subject).
  7. Welcome! I'm not a lurker, but don't post often. This is our first year of HSing. What part of TN are you in? Don't forget to post on the Networking Board along with the rest of us in TN:)
  8. I had hoped that if the island could make John walk again it could give Charlie back to us. Did anyone else think the change in Jack between the season finale and last night was really strange? He seemed so in control and a litle cold.
  9. I actually liked the story interpretation along the bottom of the picture. They put alot of humor into it instead of being so serious. I'll definately be watching to see how they end up back on the island...they just have to! Did everyong get off the island? Did some get left behind? Who was in the coffin? Who would be wondering where Kate was? I can't wait to find out...no....don't tell me.
  10. My dd is the same way, remembering all the nitty gritty details. What has worked for us is, instead of asking dd to summarize, I ask her to tell me 3 or 4(or however many you want) things she learned from what she read. This ends up being more like a summary and less like a retelling of the story.
  11. We are remodeling the upstairs bathroom, so of course all the bathroom fixtures are now in the loft (our classroom). I'm thinking of putting overstuffed pillows into the clawfoot tub so dd will have a place to stretch out and read, the vanity has become a great filing counter. The only thing I can think of for the toilet is to put a big potted plant into it:D
  12. My dd (8) is very verbal and dramatic. She can retell stories in great detail and loves to act out the question and answer. But she has can't seem to put her thoughts onto paper when answering a question or writing a summary. She is an excellent speller, just can't seem to put pencil to paper. Anyone else have this problem? I would love some suggestions on how to get her started writing. This is our first year of HSing.
  13. 6:45, just before dh leaves for work and before dd is up. This is my quiet time and I love it!
  14. I just finished reading The Skinny B*tch and it really opened my eyes! After giving up dairy, sugar, and meat I have lost 4 pounds and feel sooo much better. My dh is a meat and potatoes kind of guy, but even he is beginning to come around with just a few soup/salad/homemade bread meals. I just cut down on the amount of meat I fix for him and fill out the meal with the healthy stuff.
  15. Buy books...hmmm Work....hmmm I would definately go to the library book sale and then directly to Big Lots to buy yet another book shelf!
  16. This is just our first year, but these are what really work for us. Horizons SOTW Spelling Power CLP Pioneers and Patriots LLATL
  17. Books have always been a passion, so homeschooling just fuels the fire! Thank heavens for thrift stores, libraries, and the very understanding lady at the local homeschool store who gets worried if I don't show up to "browse" on a regular basis.:)_________________________ Gwendolyn wife of 29 years mother of 3 grown (ds, ds, dd) and 1 dd (8 yrs)
  18. I'm in East TN. Tucked up in the mountains as far east as you can go. ______________________ Gwendolyn wife for 29 years mother to 4 children, 3 grown (ds,ds,dd) and 1 dd 8 yrs at home.
