  1. I disagree. It is still being debated today. Or every ten years, it seems.:001_smile: I am curious about something. According to your own criteria, "Two things make up the law of our land one of them is precedence" wouldn't the 1790 census, with the population count only, be the precedent setting one? Any legal experts on the board that can shed some light on this?
  2. It does show disagreement even then. And also that it had to be amended to allow for anything other than the enumeration. Mr. Madison observed that they had now an opportunity of obtaining the most useful information for those who should hereafter be called upon to legislate for their country, if this bill was extended so as to embrace some other objects besides the bare enumeration of the inhabitants; it would enable them to adapt the public measures to the particular circumstances of the community.
  3. I've done some searching and found this article on the history of the census. It struck me as a very balanced article with information that would seem to satisfy both sides in this discussion. http://www.thehistorybox.com/ny_city/nycity_census_first_1790_pt_I_article00789.htm Here is the link to the "about the author" page if you want to know more about her background. She is a member of many historical societies which are listed at the bottom of the page. http://www.thehistorybox.com/about_site.htm
  4. Wouldn't it be better to collect this information at the state or local level? Wouldn't the information then be more accurate, up-to-date, and verifiable? I understand a previous posters comment that it would be too expensive to separate this information out at the national level, but the states already have a database of their own, do they not?
  5. Melissa, The UNC system (NC) only requires one year of lab, but doesn't specify in which science. Science: 3 years, including 1 year of life or biological science and 1 year of a physical science; 1 must be a laboratory course
  6. It seems there is a disagreement about what "in such manner as they shall by law direct" actually means. Article 1, Section 2: "The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct." The actual Enumeration (count, specifically for the purpose of taxation and representation(for the House of Representatives) )shall be made.......in such manner as they shall by Law direct. I take this to mean HOW the count is to be conducted. They shall make laws directing the manner in which the count is conducted. Considering the census for 1790 and the census for 1800 only counted the population, this interpretation makes sense to me. If it meant they could ask any questions they wanted they wouldn't have needed to "amend" anything because it would have been "obvious" that this was allowed. http://www.census.gov/history/www/through_the_decades/overview/1810.html Enumeration An act of May 1, 1810 amended the earlier authorizing legislation to require that, while they were collecting demographic data, assistant marshals also collect available economic data. These men recorded the "several manufacturing establishments and manufactures within their several districts, territories, and divisions." The marshals transmitted the manufacturing data to the secretary of the treasury at the same time they sent the results of the population enumeration to the secretary of state. No schedule was prescribed for the collection of industrial data and the nature of the inquiries were at the discretion of the secretary of the treasury. Because of this, the collection of manufacturing data was so erratic that it was generally considered useless except to identify broad industrial trends.
  7. We've had good luck here with using a sulfate free shampoo. Giovanni's Smooth as Silk shampoo is one we like. The tea tree oil shampoo by Giovanni made my daughter's scalp itch terribly. She had a problem with what we thought was dandruff and also the built up scaling. We tried many of the dandruff shampoos. Nizoral seemed to work the best out of those, but the Smooth as Silk gave us the best result. The scaling is completely gone and there is just a minimal amount of flaking.
  8. Yes, I sometimes do disagree with the SCOTUS rulings. Heck, the judges don't even agree with each other!:tongue_smilie:Even though James Madison is considered the "Father of the Constitution", I don't always agree with him either. (I tend to favor the anti-Federalists over the Federalists.)
  9. Any tool can become a weapon when in the wrong hands and with the wrong intent. I refer back to the previous non-partisan link http://www.scientificamerican.com/ar...he-us-census-b .
  10. Questioning the necessity for certain questions on the long form census is equal to being a conspiracy theorist? I guess all those "evil government plots" were done away with after the 2008 election.;) http://oversight.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=104%3Aobama-administrations-power-grab-to-politicize-census-met-with-fierce-opposition-by-issa-and-mchenry&catid=22&Itemid=1 Though the census itself was not intended to be "an evil government plot", that doesn't mean the information collected can't be used in an "evil" way. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=confirmed-the-us-census-b
  11. I don't believe it was the intent of the founding fathers for the census to be used as an excuse to gather such intrusive information as the OP states was on her census form. "to disclose my mortgage payment, my utility bills, what time my husband leaves for work every morning, how long it takes to get to work, and if he carpools, if we have a toilet, a sink, a stove, a fridge, running water, how many bedrooms we have, our income, if we went on vacation recently, our health coverage, etc.........(just 38 minutes worth of questions like this. that's all)" Not all of the founding fathers were Federalists.
  12. Definition of ENUMERATE transitive verb 1 : to ascertain the number of : count 2 : to specify one after another : list — enu·mer·a·tion noun Article 1 Section 2 pasted below for context. Article. I. Section 1. All legislative Powers herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and House of Representatives. Section. 2. Clause 1: The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second Year by the People of the several States, and the Electors in each State shall have the Qualifications requisite for Electors of the most numerous Branch of the State Legislature. Clause 2: No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen. Clause 3: Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons. (See Note 2) The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct. The Number of Representatives shall not exceed one for every thirty Thousand, but each State shall have at Least one Representative; and until such enumeration shall be made, the State of New Hampshire shall be entitled to chuse three, Massachusetts eight, Rhode-Island and Providence Plantations one, Connecticut five, New-York six, New Jersey four, Pennsylvania eight, Delaware one, Maryland six, Virginia ten, North Carolina five, South Carolina five, and Georgia three. Clause 4: When vacancies happen in the Representation from any State, the Executive Authority thereof shall issue Writs of Election to fill such Vacancies. Clause 5: The House of Representatives shall chuse their Speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment. When reading Article 1 Section 2 in its entirety, the original purpose of the census becomes quite clear. I find the questions for the 1790 census quite telling. 1790 In 1790, assistant marshals listed the name of each head of household, and asked the following questions: The number of free White males aged: under 16 years of 16 years and upward [*]Number of free White females [*]Number of other free persons [*]Number of slaves http://www.census.gov/history/www/through_the_decades/index_of_questions/1790_1.html
  13. Is she still on this board? Can you name names? Please? I will be selling materials and buying for next year soon. It would be nice to know what names to avoid. Sue
  14. Thanks Lisa! :001_smile: Sending the link through a pm is a great idea. I hadn't thought of that. I have started giving feedback to buyers, and they in return give me feedback. It's nice how things work out that way. Sue
  15. Although I appreciate you have reasons for being hesitant to purchase from someone "new" on this board, I feel the need to respond. :D With only 140 posts I appear to be "new", but I have been visiting these boards daily, sometimes many times daily, since I joined in 2008. I just don't post much. I have sold quite a few items, and I always try to treat people as I would like to be treated. I try very hard to give thorough and accurate descriptions of what I am selling, package very well, ship asap, and always use delivery confirmation. I would hate for people to not buy from me because I appear "new".:crying: I have had someone refuse to sell me an item after I offered to pay with any form of payment they wanted, even after giving board names of others I had bought items from. I wish more people would use the feedback option.:001_smile: Sue

  17. I'm not a MAC user, but I have been researching the IMAC and Macbook Pro also. You have some of the same questions I do. I hope someone gives you some good advice so that I might benefit from it also. One thing to consider is that on the Apple website they do have a page announcing a new operating system, the MAC OS X Lion, due to be released this summer. It might be another reason to put off a purchase until the August tax-free weekend and back-to-school offers. Sue http://www.apple.com/macosx/lion/
  18. I'm going with the Apple warranty. Thanks for the help. :001_smile: Sue
