Newbie Question: What to do with other son?
Randa replied to nikkistone's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Starfall is a good option too. We subscribed to the "more Starfall" and it has been worth every penny of the $35/year. Tons of stuff to play and learn at the same time. -
Question about Faber My First Piano Adventures
Randa replied to momto3innc's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
This site has at least the Table of Contents: http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/My-First-Piano-Adventure-Writing-Book-A/8060635 Hope that helps! -
Spotify isn't terrible and the ads are short. Also, there is an AWESOME site called Classics for Kids - I recently posted an overview on my site: http://homeschoolroundup.com/easy-and-fun-music-appreciation/

The negative, self-centered, emotional, literal child
Randa replied to mom2l&j's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I have REALLY appreciated this thread. My almost 6 year old son is very much like many of these kids, and I have a lot of new ideas to try! Because I am naturally a positive person, the negativity has been particularly difficult for me to be patient with. What frustrates me the most is the unending hissy fits over tiny things like adjusting his chair, the wedgie he can never get rid of when he's angry (LOL), etc. The main thing that has worked for us is having him run some laps around the house, which leads me to believe that finding ways to increase serotonin when we are heading towards an explosion will be helpful. I also need to learn to make taking some time alone be less like a punishment and more like helping him to cope with the bad feelings. Anyway, thanks again everyone! -
A day at home by myself... what would you do?
Randa replied to JoyfulMama's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I would sit at the computer and play, and enjoy the silence! -
S/O Working from home--what do you do?
Randa replied to Moxie's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I do graphic design, website design (for WordPress) and own multiple websites. LOVE it, but I have to be careful that it doesn't just consume time that should be prioritized better. -
I'm using Webster's Speller - get a free copy on this web page: http://www.donpotter.net/ed.htm

We have the English From the Roots Up cards (check on Amazon) which are flashcards with the Greek or Latin root on the front, and the meaning on the back along with English words that use that root. I think they are totally awesome, and would see no reason to teach the roots using the Greek alphabet. We are even planning to teach Koine Greek to the boys, but I still like learning the roots with the English alphabet.

do we really need a handwriting curriculum?
Randa replied to lorrainejmc's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Once they learn to form the letters correctly, I think it's overkill to have a handwriting curriculum. Copywork does the same job, or writing as part of a phonics program. -
Anyone NOT use a spine or curriculum for history and science?
Randa replied to hsmom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
For Science, we're currently interest-led and avoiding textbooks and curricula. Next year we're doing Classical Conversations, so will probably start using that as a spine. For history, we're using SOTW for now and "living books". -
Not sure what level she's at, but these might work: http://freestuff4kids.net/2011/03/29/free-preschool-kindergarten-printable-math-worksheets/
