  1. Link? When I was a young teen I loved coloring those fuzzy black velvet coloring posters with markers.
  2. I have this one by Jen Ski. The paper quality is really nice. http://www.amazon.com/Just-Add-Color-Mid-Century-Illustrations/dp/1592539483 I also got one from Etsy - you can find some really unique ones there and some are pdf format. I like the idea of doing the more educational ones just for fun; I really had not thought about that. I have this Geography one somewhere: http://www.amazon.com/Geography-Coloring-Book-Wynn-Kapit/dp/0131014722/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1433004501&sr=1-1&keywords=geography+coloring+book
  3. OK, next dense question. Now I am skimming through Algebra 1 EOC tests looking for problems that make me say Hmm, Foerster doesn't teach this. Maybe we should work that in somewhere. Where else can I look for such problems besides EOC tests? I am not very good at reading standards. I want to read problems :)
  4. Ah, well perhaps my experience is of limited help since we only used the grammar. But my reasoning was the same; we "needed" to finish Book 8 by high school.
  5. I decided to come out of my expact bubble after reading the thread about Foerster, an EOC test, and the Common Core. What is it about this entity called Common Core Algebra that we might be missing by using Foerster Algebra? Stastics and data analysis? Specific vocabulary? Will looking at the EOC practice tests in the other thread enlighten me? Can I count on them being Common Core enough?
  6. We skipped from 6 to 8. Chapter 2 was bumpy, and I started to doubt the decision. But after that it has been super-smooth. I had 7 on hand just in case, and we have not needed it. We only do the grammar - not the writing lessons. ETA: We did book 5 in 6th, book 6 in 7th, and book 8 in 8th.
  7. Benign is one of the most beautiful words in the English language. Now hoping for good news going forward. Hugs.
  8. I have either purchased or downloaded samples of the following from ibooks. Most of them are for high school level. Miller Levine Biology Cambridge IGCSE Geography E.O Wilson's Life on Earth We the People Logic of English Are you interested in other ebooks than what you can find on ibooks? Some ebooks (Art of Problem Solving, Latin for the New Millennium) come in ebook format but not through ibooks.
  9. I will be using Miller Levine as the spine for an Honors 9th Bio. While I see your point about consistency, I am inclined toward the counterpoint. I don't like the idea of a single author / series for multiple years of science. I would prefer broader exposure for my student.
  10. I agree with using GSWL. We used it in 7th and DS started in 8th online with the Harvey Center. The text is Latin for the New Millennium, and it was a great year.
  11. Allow me to pout for a moment. So many of these require that you be a U.S. resident, and are not open to U.S. citizens living abroad :(
  12. My mom is 78 and very pretty. She turns heads :) Unfortunately, I did not inherit her nice skin nor her sense of style!
  13. Oh, well that is interesting. I am tired of R&S, but he isn't LOL. Maybe I should look at it.
  14. IF (big if) it was within my means, I would pay for my child to live away from home an hour away. But if getting into a safe neighborhood equated with a long commute, I might not.
  15. The thing that would bother me the most (in addition to the overall cost) would be the random roommate aspect. At least in a dorm you have the prospect of a swap if it is not a good match. Leases make that trickier, and we found apartment hunting to be extremely stressful. Apartments are snapped up as soon as they come on the market. He is moving again this weekend, but it was not as stressful this time.(A) he is more experienced and (B) it is much easier to find a place in May than in August. Summer is another thing to think about. Will you be stuck with the rent in the summer? How would that work out? My son goes to summer school, but if he didn't then I would not want to be paying for an empty place. He managed feeding himself just fine. He is very frugal about his food budget, but he is in a Northern European city. I know from your previous posts that you are at least familiar with Germany, so I probably don't have to tell you that food can be very expensive. We have no transportation costs. Walking or cycling gets him where he needs to be. I wrote a lot, and much of it is probably not helpful. Overall, I will admit that we underestimated his COL. He really has to live on a tight budget. But he loves loves loves his school and his city.
  16. Any chance of finding a roommate? My son attends a school in a city with sky-high rents. So guess what? The dorm prices were sky-high, too. He lived there the first year w/no meal plan and there was no downside to the lack of a meal plan. For sophomore year, he moved out of the dorm. His apartment with a roommate is way less than the dorm.
  17. Holding you in my thoughts. Is this older DD or younger? Feel free to ignore the question, of course.
  18. I live in a culture now with such a relaxed attitude toward nudity that this would not even have been a story here.
  19. Thanks for posting that. I am putting together a Scandinavian geography course, and thanks to the list discovered the Scandinavian Studies Dept. at Berkely :)
  20. Have any of you run across this story? The headlines are that a UCSD visual / performance art class required nudity as part of the final exam. If you read deeper, there were alternative ways to fulfill the assignment. Apparently he class has been around for a long time, but a mom complained recently which landed the story in the news. I think I will remember this story the next time that I need to drive home that point that thoroughly reading the syllabus is a really really good idea! Article in a San Diego Paper: http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2015/may/12/ucsd-naked-final-exam/ Article from Inside Higher Ed: https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/05/11/it-legitimate-pedagogical-tool-art-professor-ask-students-be-nude-one-class ETA: I changed the post title
  21. DS is finishing R&S 8. He loves grammar, but I don't want to do R&S any longer. I have a few books like Woe is I that we could read through for fun. He will be studying grammar in two foreign languages ( Latin & Danish). What I think he needs is something to practice editing. We used some Editor-in-Chief in 7th, and it was harder for him to notice mistakes in a passage than it is for him to diagram a complicated sentence. He did OK on the English portion of the ACT in April, but there remains room for improvement. Any suggestions?
  22. Can you write it all up for him and make a pdf of it? I would make it very readable for a busy health care worker, though. I would keep it succinct, and I would bold keywords. Previous Injuries (type and date) Confirmed Diagnoses Known Drug Allergies You could leave his name, birthdate, and other identifiable info off the document for privacy reasons. When he takes it in with him to the doctor, they can scribble his name on it and stick it in his file.
  23. I really don't want to derail Rootann's thread, but 1Togo I just need to pick your brain a tiny bit more about the Great Ideas Journal. Are your students working from Adler's 102 ideas or the Six Great Ideas? I love the idea :)
  24. 1togo, the specifics of your post are SO helpful! Which Adler book are you using?
