  1. before there was Shout and other stain removers, my mother used to use straight pine-sol on our stained clothes.
  2. 2 of the boys that I mentioned are socially detached. They will not look anyone in the eyes and their verbal skills are many years behind their peers. These are symptoms similar to what Matthew Laborteaux had. Now, I'm definitely not saying that this is a common thing and I know that thousands of nurturing people have autistic children. I'm just saying that I don't think it can be totally discounted.
  3. I have personally seen autism in 3 different little boys who had mothers that were neglectful. One mother did have major psychological problems. She down right rejected her child and did everything she could to get out of nuturing him, even divorcing her husband. I baby sat him for a little while when he was an infant. His mother literally fed him long distance. She would lay him down on the sofa and sit as far away from him as possible and stick the bottle in his mouth, without touching him. When he was older, she propped it up with a pillow or blanket. It broke my heart. I guess what I'm saying is that I believe physical and emotional trauma may be triggers for some autistic children. I remember watching a special on tv with Matthew Laborteaux (alber from Little House on the Prairie). He talked about how he was born with a hole in his heart and had a diagnosis of of autism when he was adopted. His adopted mother took it upon herself to do some heavy nurturing and eventually his diagnosis was reversed. Couldn't the physical trauma of immunizations be a trigger as well? One of my sons had symptoms of shock the day of his 4 month shots. I remember wrapping him up in blankets and holding him close, trying to get him to nurse. He's been on a delayed scheduled since then at my insistence.
  4. I don't read vampire books, but I loved The Historian. It has all the things I love in a book, a little history, a little mystery, books, libraries, people who actually read.
  5. It is the survival story that really grabs me. I guess it's what has been called "the indomitable human spirit" angle. The religion thing didn't seem to be a major factor in the story, at least to me. Besides that...it is fiction. :-)
  6. I would read them if I could find them, our library only has one of his books.
  7. The story truly fascinated me. I went out and bought it and have read it again. I know I will read another time in the future as well. I've seen many reviews on the internet and have been surprised at the level of animosity some readers have expressed.
  8. I didn't not like: The Road- This won an award??????? Anna Karenina- finished but was sorry afterward that I wasted my time Catcher in the Rye-didn't get past the first page Catch 22- got 1/3 of the way through Grapes of Wrath- forced myself to read this in high school. There have been others, but I've learned how to spot the books I won't like, most of the time. If the book summary on the back or the cover has any of these words: lust, prostitute, abuse, pornography, passion, or similar clue words- even just once. I know what's probably coming and I usually skip it. I made the mistake of reading one Nicholas Sparks book, Message in Bottle (?) Blech. His nonfiction book Three Weeks with My Brother is actually quite good, it lulled me into a false sense of security, so I decided to try one of his romances. Talk about Tripe!
  9. I've done it for years. I love getting the kids nugget meal at Chick-Fil-A with a lemonade instead of soda.
  10. I've read Anna Karenina and War and Peace. I vote for War and Peace. Anna Karenina is over rated in my opinon.
  11. the cod liver oil. I've had more energy than usual lately. The only changes in life are the cooler temps, we're back to our regular school routine, and I started taking cod liver oil once a day about 2 weeks ago. Can cod liver oil be my magic bullet? Or is it just psychological because of the time of the year?
  12. What I was thinking of is not really original art work but a type of craft item that almost anyone could do.
  13. Is it unethical to copy an idea you see on etsy and make similar items to sell somewhere else?
  14. I eat oats, almonds, cinnamon, fruit, and milk, with a dollop of yogurt. I didn't know it was called muesli. :-) For the kids I will buy from: store brand honey nut o's store brand golden crisp (sweetened puffed wheat) store brand honey, oats , and flakes, with almonds Post honey nut shredded wheat Post shredded wheat and bran- I will also eat this, it has nothing but wheat and bran. Kellogg's frosted shredded wheat Kellogg's or store brand raisin bran Barbara's all natural shredded oat squares Peanut Butter Captain Crunch (only on sale)- I found this to be the most acceptable of similar cereals. Post Great Grains with pecans (only on sale) I won't buy anything with artificial colors and flavors, if I can help it. I prefer to get stuff with some kind of fiber in it.
  15. I'm getting one of my teen boys season 4 of deep space nine. I haven't decided what else yet. In the past I've bought books, special foods that they like and don't get often, movies, computer games, headphones, and board or card games (the monopoly card game was a big hit last year). I also make them flannel sleep pants.
  16. My boys love getting flashlights and sports cards. I'm thinking of getting my oldest son a stainless steel water bottle. I saw them for 5 bucks recently at a discount store.
  17. Conventional whole, only if it says "no hormones." Here, you can only legally buy raw milk if you own a share in a cow. I know of someone who payed $200 for her share, plus she pays an additional $35 a month for a gallon of milk a week. That's way beyond our budget capabilities.
  18. I can't imagine falling asleep at the dentist. Passing out, yes. I am need massive amounts of novocaine lately to deaden my tooth nerves. My problem is that initial shot. It is almost always incredibly painful for me, in spite of that useless numbing gel, and I have to practice anxiety coping excercises when the dentist leaves the room. I believe one day I will need one of those little white pills.
  19. Historical interpreter/ tour guide. Amusement park employee.
  20. We went out this morning and were thrilled to see that the squirrel was gone and in its place were some sticks and leaves. Silly us, we thought the momma squirrel was saying thank you. It turns out the neighbor boys went home and told their dad about the squirrel, and he came and took it home. They fed it and are taking it to a nature center.
  21. There are many flavors of creation science and many Christian interpretations of the first few chapters of Genesis. I would personally recommend the book God and Evolution by David Wilcox, who explains what the science of DNA has discovered about the history of life on Earth and why it is not a threat to Christianity.
