  3. We're using two books by the Bluedorn Brothers - The Thinking Toolbox and The Fallacy Detective. One lesson a day, plus questions. We LOVE it! He gets 1/2 credit for Introduction to Logic this year.
  4. I'm a visual person -- it helps me to make lists of things I want to accomplish, and then cross them off as I complete the task. Highlighters in pretty colors help a lot, too! :D
  5. We used Latina Christiana from Memoria Press, and then added in Mars Hill Latin.
  6. http://www.bookadventure.org is a great website for your age range of children! There are over 7,000 titles to pick from, each with a fairly easy multiple choice type quiz after the book is read, so you would know if they comprehended what they were reading. Type in some of your book ideas and see if Book Adventure has it! sparksnotes.com and shmoop.com use a "study guide" approach for higher grades.
  7. Some people hoard food in case of a disaster ... I hoard school supplies:D This time of year it's impossible to resist.... the 15 cent Walmart notebooks, 25 cent glue sticks, sigh... I wish my kids still needed crayons, or I'd be buying them too....
  8. We live in SC, where about 1/3 of the population is of African American descent. When my kids were in K-1st-2nd grade, we used Crayola's " Multicultural crayons" to talk about how beautiful and varied people's skin color can be. I'll never forget when my daughter came home excitedly from a neighbor's house and informed me, "Mommy, Hanna's skin color is so pretty -- it's called "mahogany!" :) http://www.gotoforms.com/Crayola-Crayons-p/bin52008w.htm
  9. I LOVED Julie and Julia! Here's some more ideas: Fools Gold Quigley Down Under Return to Me Shakespeare in Love Sleepless in Seattle Her Alibi Enjoy your quiet time! :lurk5:
  10. Yea! That's terrific news! Dave Ramsey would be so proud! ;)
  11. Our SC Super Walmart is in the throes of remodeling. The Pharmacy is in the middle of the store, temporarily enclosed in a makeshift plywood "box." It's a disaster! Men's underwear was temporarily in the freezer section of the store! The arts/crafts/sewing section is disappearing before my eyes. I hate it!
  12. We liked Steck-Vaughn's Maps, Charts and Graphs Books G and H are for 7th and 8th grade
  13. No advice, just a sympathy hug. God gave you motherly instincts for a reason -- and if you are comfortable with the physician treating your child, that's one less thing to worry about! Good for you. :grouphug:
  14. What a whirlwind it has been for my dear, dear friend of 20 years. Her husband has been in the Army National Guard for almost 20 years. He was called up full-time for 2 years back in 2001 and served a tour in Iraq. Last year, in the middle of being high school principal for a large Christian school in the area, the Army called him up again - 2 more years full-time. He left a few days ago with his batallion to serve in Iraq for a year. JoAnne's 2 oldest sons also have decided to join the army - one is joining the Reserves - to help pay for college. He left a week ago for 6 months of basic training and advanced infantry training. Her other son graduated from college in May, and decided he wanted to go Army full-time. He also left last week, leaving behind his bride of 2 months, for basic training. JoAnne's husband and 2 sons are all at different training facilities in the US. The good news is, her youngest son is at home with her - he is getting ready to start his first year of college. And they just moved into their very first home, so she is busy decorating, painting, etc. Thank you for lifting her up in prayer!
  15. When my kids were younger we enjoyed Abeka's health.. it was light, easy for them to understand, enjoyable all around. For high school they did Switched on Schoolhouse High School Health - I believe it was called Health Quest. We liked using a computer program for a class vs textbook. (the computer program did all the grading, etc)
  16. Kari, there are no words... only tears... I'm so sorry. So very, very sorry....:grouphug:
  17. Our family used BF's series for several years - we love their sets! The Teaching Character through Literature doesn't last a whole school year - I actually used at night during "bedtime reading" and asked them questions. The kids were about 6 to 8, or 7 to 9, at the time.
