  1. Here's a partial list of the books, in chrono order: Pedro’s Journal A Lion to Guard Us Pocahontas Squanto, Friend of Pilgrims Courage of Sarah Noble Matchlock Gun The Bears on Hemlock Mountain And then What Happened Paul Revere? Sign of the Beaver Johnny Tremain Meet Thomas Jefferson The Cabin Faced West Stone Fox
  2. Sorry. I have a partial list in chronological order. Pm me and I will email it to you.
  3. I think you could easily choose books from the list, read in somewhat chronological order, and enjoy reading for reading's sake!
  4. My very sensitive girl (age 8) does summer swimming. There's a gaggle of kids, most coach comments are to the group, and when they're in the water, it's just the kid and the pool. Can be as fun and relaxing or as competitive as you want, provided a decent tone is set by the coaches.
  5. I have nothing but empathy. I am trying to make a difference. Recently cut out gluten. Doing special ab exercises (do a search on transverse abdominal exercises) to help my post-C-section belly. Started yoga two weeks ago, and my abs are killing me. Hope this all helps!
  6. I use Easy Lunchboxes for the containers. They are awesome and easy. They come in a four-pack for under $14. I can make four lunches in minutes. And I don't do anything fancy. ;) http://www.easylunchboxes.com/?AFFID=64892 Disclaimer: I am an affiliate seller with Easy Lunchboxes. This means a small percentage of profit goes to me. I do not pocket this money. Instead, I use this profit to add to the grant for the orphan my family sponsors on Reece's Rainbow. You can see him here: http://reecesrainbow.org/isaiah-3g
  7. Egads. People need to silence their thoughts better. Sorry you had to deal with that!
  8. Hello! I am homeschooling my daughters, 8 and 5, and wondering about the best route for my son with Down syndrome. He is almost 3 and just started at a public school, self-contained preschool. While he is learning a lot and gets all of his therapy on site, I am hoping that in the future he can be either mainstreamed or homeschooled. I know there are others here who have kids w/T21. If you are willing to share a bit of your story/perspective, this would be very helpful to me. Thank you so much! Gwen
  9. So heartbreaking. I'm so sorry you are going through this again. HUGS. :grouphug:
  10. Thanks again to everyone who has posted. You have all helped me! This is what is so wonderful about homeschooling and this community. Yvonne -- Great news about your daughter!! Thank you for sharing.
  11. All great points. Love the idea of "transition year" if needed. For now, I'm going with my gut, which is to work with her on what she needs. We'll worry about grade level later. For basketball, I'll still say 3rd, since the league puts 2nd/3rd together and it doesn't matter. And she's in Sunday School with 3rd grade. Good point about how many other states have an earlier cutoff. Thanks all!!!
  12. Thank you again. I like the idea of a "step back" and especially the "side step."
  13. Good point! In Virginia, the cutoff is Sept. 30. The trend seems to be to hold boys back and send girls forward, though that is a generalization. Just thinking out loud here -- DD was ready for K, but I don't need to rush her if things need to slow down now. I'd rather have her master things well than speed through just to cover.
  14. Thank you all for your support and perspective. I feel a lot better! :)
  15. I think I am needing perspective on my DD8. She is a late September birthday, and so she just turned 8. We started her in K at a private school, and pulled her out part-way through 1st to homeschool. She has always been good at reading but behind in math and writing. In addition, she is somewhat immature. Now she is technically in third grade. But I don't think she's doing third grade work, per se. Yes, she can read well, and she tested at 2nd/3rd grade levels at the end of last year. But this year has been a struggle for her. Just wondering if I need to step back, put away some of the "third grade" material, and focus on building skills and learning, rather than being concerned that she's still in the 2nd grade math book, etc. (And please know I'm not majorly concerned, just more reflecting on whether the grade label is either accurate or even necessary for her right now.) If you've read this far...I appreciate it.
  16. My daughter went g-free this summer, and I joined her. Many of my issues improved as well! Here are some great web sites for gluten free eating: http://www.adventuresofaglutenfreemom.com/ http://glutenfreegirl.com/ http://www.health-bent.com/ http://www.celiacchicks.com/
  17. Mine is mostly about children with special needs, including my own child, and also about orphans with special needs listed through Reece's Rainbow. I do, however, mention other issues related to family, diet, school, etc.
  18. This is not my field in any way, but my husband is into this. I will try to remember to ask him tonight. :) In the meantime, he loves stuff my Tim Keller. Just throwing this out there to help bump up your thread and perhaps get other ideas. Good luck!
  19. Oops, sorry. Forgot to post the link: http://www.pdf995.com/
  20. I've used this one in the past. The free version is a bit of a pain in that you have to turn down the upgrade offer every time....but it is worth it to me.
  21. We moved from Fairfax, VA, to Hanover County, VA about ten years ago. I have no regrets. Still close to DC if you want to visit family. Great metro area in Richmond, with tons of arts, culture, history, restaurants, medical expertise, etc. Hanover is a homeschool friendly place, and other localities are similar (with the exception of Henrico County, which seems to be a pain for homeschoolers). We are twenty minutes from downtown, ten minutes from Target. But I have 1.5 acres of land and plenty of fresh air. Traffic is a joke compared to NoVA. I know the market is different now, but when we sold in Fairfax, we got nearly double the house (and land) for the same money. You could have horses or walk to shops...depends on where you are. Check out listings for Mechanicsville and Ashland to start. Good luck!
  22. I used FLL 1&2 and was not a big fan of the repetition, but the facts are spot on! Then, for third, I bought R&S and was very quickly bored. So I bought Shirley 3 and have been happy for the most part. My DD loves the jingles and is learning about parts of speech and their functions in a sentence. We use IEW All Things Fun and Fascinating for writing. Next year we will do Classical Conversations Essentials, and so I knew that Shurley and IEW would best prepare her for this class.
  23. Hello! A woman I know just had her second set of twins. Her other children range in age from 12-3, for a total of seven kids. Their church is a good distance away, and so they aren't getting a lot of meals that way. I'm scheduled to make a meal for them this week, and the only request is no dairy. I know they are healthy eaters, Bread Beckers bread makers, etc. I was thinking of roasting two whole chickens so that they could have plenty of meat...and probably bake some potatoes and carrots for sides, fruit for dessert. Then, if I can swing it, send some tortillas and fixins so that the next day for lunch/dinner they could have chicken wraps. Would this work, you think, for a family of nine? Or any other suggestions? The other meal someone is making this week is chili, and so that's already taken. Thanks!
