  1. Ladies you are awesome! Thank you so much!
  2. Thanks ladies. I looked at that set and she notated a change in one of the books. Exploring American History in her first edition vs The Story of the U.S. in the 2nd edition. Is the Exploring American history the Christian Liberty Press book for 5th graders? Is the book used a lot? Is the replacement a lot better?
  3. Can anyone here tell me the differences between the newest edition aka Adventures in U.S. History and Adventures in MFW. I would prefer to buy used unless there is some reason I shouldn't.
  4. I'm considering this for next year with then 5th and 2nd grader. We did ACS but it was more about scientific process and observation. I'm thinking this might be too much for barely reading and writing 1st grader (who will be the 2nd grader next year) and I was really hoping to keep them together for science. Any input from others?
  5. Is the list of socratic questions in the dvd helpful? Is there such a list elsewhere that one could find without purchasing TTC?
  6. amyrjoy = would love to hear how your lessons went! Anyone used this? Can you tell me how you used it?!
  7. Week 24 complete! We leave for China in less than 3 weeks!
  8. I have had it bookmarked for a while and my 4th grade son mentioned he would like to learn more about the Civil War. So I went to the site to look it over. The "curriculum" looks like it is really geared for a classroom setting. I'd love to hear from any moms who have used and how? Should we view the power point presentations and then go through the classroom activities as best as we can?
  9. We love Righstart math around here. It is teacher intensive which is hard when you've got several to teach but with only 1 I'd definetly do it! It has great resale value, too! If I only had 1 I would do a more CM approach in the young years - My Father's World type of education. Nature study, games, etc.
  10. We loved loved loved MOH volume 1 - it would be great for a 1st grader. Lots of biblical history and combines history with fun activities if and when you want them. There are lots of books listed for reading and you can get ideas for books from TOG and SL websites. You could purchase the Biblioplan guide to help you with readers too, if that would make you feel more comfortable. I would definetly not stress over it and make it FUN!
  11. I severely struggled with this for our current school year. We have LOVED MOH and I wanted to continue it but felt we needed some American history. I tried TOG but it was a bomb here. So I ended up using Hakim's Story of Us for my 7th grader along with National Geographic Almanac of American History and I'm just doing a president study with my 4th grader. 1st grader is listening in. We used This Country of Ours, though it end at Woodrow Wilson and we've used The Everything President's Book. Looking back, I now wished I would used Biblioplan Year 3 this year. I didn't choose it bc the companion for year 3 wasn't finished and so in my mind it seemed incomplete but now I see it would have been the perfect combination of what we ended up using with a better structure to include all 3 kids. Before deciding this I also purchased Notgrass America the Beautiful, which I also really like. So I'm not sure what we'll do next year. I had decided to get 4th grader through modern this year and start him back on Ancients for 5th (along with 2nd grader) and let 7th grader continue on with study of modern for next year so he can be ready to start ancients in 9th. I'm strongly leaning towards MFW highschool for him. 4th grader doesn't want to go back to ancients yet though and wants to study all the wars in great detail.... so Biblioplan year 4 for us all (which doesn't have MOH since vol 4 isn't written yet) or separate time periods? Decisions, decisions..... I seem to be making lots of bad ones this school year!
  12. I'm finishing up PAL with my 1st grader this year.... he is not reading as fluently as I'd like but I've got my eyes on Bible Heroes for next year! The samples look really good. The last phase of PAL starts teaching dress ups, etc. I'm very happy with it. But my son is not applying all the phonics rules that we've worked on as well as he needs to. I haven't started him on Discovery phase yet bc I know it will just frustrate him. We don't spend 30 minutes per day on the games bc he gets bored of them but maybe that is the disconnect for him. I had even started doing a little AAS thinking the hands on approach might help him. He's a sweet boy and my baby (for 3 more weeks anyway) and we are just having lots of fun so I haven't pushed him too much! But I am looking forward to Bible Heroes!
  13. I have a reluctant reader and I'm assuming your son must be also? My oldest was an advanced reader once he finally learned how but my middle son just doesn't like to read. I'm going to give you suggestions that the middle son has enjoyed - The Stink Moody Books A-Z Mysteries - Ron Roy - simple and straightforward and there are 26 of them! This is the series that got my oldest reading alot in 2nd grade, but my middle son has read some of them in 4th grade Sign of the Beaver - he read last fall as assigned schoolwork but really enjoyed it. We discovered a movie version at the library this week and that was fun to watch. Eli Whitney, Boy Mechanic Magic Tree House books. He likes the more recent ones the most.
  14. I feel that I have totally bombed on a few curriculum choices this year. Now that the school year is almost over I feel that I have found a few things that would have been a perfect fit for us. I had even looked at these curriculums before I made a different choice that didn't worok out for us. Please tell me I will get better at this!
  15. What do you plan to use in 5th? Just curious :tongue_smilie:
  16. Well, I didnt' meant the quote that big whole thing with pictures and all - sorry about that! The package was kind of beat up but the books were fine. It was postmakred 2/13 and arrived to me 2/19.
  17. Well, guess what? I opened a Paypal dispute on 2/13. Still no contact directly or through paypal but guess what arrived on my door today? The books sent by media mail on 2/13. It's sad that it took that to get her to mail the books. If she would have simply corresponded with me it would have been so much better! But the books are here thank goodness!
  18. These look really neat! Did you simply add them along with the time period you were studying? Do a project a week?
  19. Our week in review is done. I've afraid it seems rather boring; but I like typing up all we've done as it makes me see we have accomplished something! ha!

  21. Tapestry of Grace would have been the ideal education for me as a highschooler. I loved reading the great books and enthusiastically read many of them on my own during those year, even though I had no one to discuss them with and internet was not around so there were no chat boards, etc. I tried it with my crew this year after longingly looking at it for a few years. It just didn't work for my oldest. He is a math/science minded kid. He is a great reader but not of the type of lit books they were recommending. We did it for 1 quarter (that is all I bought) and I gave it up. He disliked it and it stressed me out trying to have a discussion with him as directed by the curriculum. It was fine for my other 2 and I liked having the worksheets to go along with the lit books recommended for them but their favorites are also science and math. It just didn't work for us. THough I wish it had!
  22. Online USPS.com says media mail should arrive in 2-8 business days. I went ahead and opened a dispute on paypal. I hate to do it but I need the books or the $ to buy them. I'm already going to be in limbo for a few weeks just waiting on the dispute process. urghhh
  23. Ordered some books from a member here. I paid with paypal. She promised to ship 1/28/13. I emailed her asking when she mailed them and on Friday 2/1 she said I should have them soon though she didn't confirm the ship date. Here we are now, 2 weeks later and the books haven't arrived and she hasn't responded to my 3 emails that I've sent since Thursday, 2/7, asking her to confirm the shipping date. I want to give her the benefit of the doubt. I know things happen. If she didn't get them mailed out when she promised I would rather know it sooner than later. However, I need those books and I certainly can't afford to lose $60. I don't want to order from another source and have 2 sets and I really don't have the money to buy them again either. Should I contact paypal? Wait a few more days? What would you do?
  24. A review in pictures for this week!
