  1. My f and mil have thrown the census people for a loop - they moved in early May to a home that was vacant on April 1 (or whatever the date was). They've had 3 visits I think.
  2. Definitely a night owl myself. Even now that I'm pregnant and so physically tired at night - my mind is ready to go! DH is going out of town tomorrow, so I stay up even later. I have a good to-do list for tomorrow night!
  3. I'm always on the lookout for good deals. I just bought the Saxon 3 TM from a local homeschool mom clearing her shelves. Oldest DS is beginning K (Saxon 1) this year. I couldn't pass up the good deal! :tongue_smilie:
  4. It's been 15 years since I graduated college, so this may have changed. I remember, when completing the FAFSA, there was a place where you indicated which forms of aid you were considering. I distinctly remember indicating that I was not interested in any type of Parent loans, as that was not possible for my parents either. Again, that was a while back, and you're past that point now. Something to look for next year. :001_smile:
  5. I had the same sense of enlightenment when I read the Revolution section in a bio of John Adams, as he did a lot of diplomatic work in Europe during the Rev. War. I'm looking forward to learning so much myself as we work through SOTW - beginning next year... :001_smile:
  6. DH and SIL are 6y 4m apart (no other sibs). From the stories I've heard from entire family, DH was VERY happy to have a sibling and doted on her as a baby/toddler. Their only rough patch seems to have been when DH was in middle school and SIL in elem. Now, they could not be any closer!
  7. When I was in graduate school, our lab inherited a refrigerator (for food) from a moving lab. We had the job of emptying the other lab's food. This was around 2002; there were at least seven jars of strawberry preserves with expiriation dates ranging back to 1985. The building we were in was built in the 90's, so someone actually moved at least a couple of the jars from the old building to the new one!
  8. Wow! You are some amazing women! Up through June, I worked 15-20 hours/week for three years (9 of those outside the home). I resigned since my oldest is beginning K this year, and I, personally, was having a hard time keeping home and work separated since I had some time sensitive tasks and almost always had work email open. DS really needs a consistent (somewhat at least) schedule, so we decided to have me quit working for now - I felt so stretched, but I had nothing on many of you! :tongue_smilie: In a few years, once my children can contribute more to household things, I hope to land some type of teaching job. Glad to see it working for so many!
  9. I've paid for dresses when I'm a bridesmaid, and my bridesmaids paid for their own as well. I would probably let them pay for the dresses and consider them the bridesmaids' gifts. If you're paying for the rehearsal dinner, maybe you can put more $ towards that?
  10. Me, too. IRL, I always feel so different than the women around me - even other homeschool moms in my church. True again for me! I also agree with someone else who said that introverts wait until having something new/extra before posting. I'm always willing to post on straightforward questions, but since DS is just beginning K, I don't have a lot to offer! I am an introvert married to an introvert (who is slightly more socially capable than I), and DS is very much an extrovert :tongue_smilie:. We're living in a small town that is notoriously difficult to break into, for DS's sake, we keep trying. He has one good friend he sees regularly, and we hope he'll be playing soccer this fall. Several people have responded to our, "We're homeschooling," with, "But he's so social..." :001_huh: In groups, I've always been more of an observer - this is true even on forums and Facebook. Yet this forum has been a breath of fresh air. I would never be able to develop this type of network for such practical support IRL.
  11. I'm trying to remember this - especially with DS's peers speeding along in their own reading. Thanks!
  12. I purchased Saxon K soon after my son turned 5, and we've gone at a super accelerated pace because it was like playtime for him. We're not quite done, but I plan to finish by doing only the lessons that are new to ds - none of the review lessons or assessments. Since I have it, I will use it with other dc - at an earlier age though. So I agree with everyone else - SKIP IT!
  13. Bible: The Child's Story Bible and Catechism for Young Children Reading: Continue OPGTR and BOB books Math: Continue Saxon K and move on to Saxon 1 Handwriting: Daily copywork and cheap workbook History: Lots of library books - lots of topics - basic exposure Geography: US Geography Science: Mudpies to Magnets, different science kits, and library books Music: Kindermusik - Young Child 3 & 4 Logic: Mind Benders K and Math Analogies We'll see how much of this happens after Baby Boy arrives in December!:001_smile:
  14. I'm not an expert, but I think that the immune system is part of the lymphatic system? (or vice versa?) I have a lot to review in the next few years!
  15. For our ds-5, we recently began the Vos story Bible. We love it! Vos includes all the extra explanations that I was trying to add to lighter story Bibles we had before. I found myself inserting the same comments in the Vos child's Bible - just to read the same thought in the next sentence! I've learned my lesson and now just read the story to him. It has turned out to be just the level of depth I was looking for.
  16. I've been thinking ahead as well since I will have a 4th grader and a 1st grader (in 3 years). I like the idea of combining, but I also like the idea of children going through everything 'sequentially.' I'm glad to see so many doing both! This helps me see that I don't really know what I'll be doing in three years in that area!
