  1. Please share your experience, knowledge, pro's & cons of this program Thanks
  2. I'm just looking for a few ideas for science. We haven't gotten to much science so far this year as planned, and I am curious as to the topics/methods that others are covering this year for Kindergarten. I may just jumpstart with 1stgrade year plans--animals, human body, plants. I don't know..my brain seems frozen at this time of the year.:willy_nilly: Thanks:D
  3. What have you done or are you doing to teach your teens to earn, save and manage their money in preparation for the college years ahead. I have a 15 1/2 year old and would really like to begin doing something systematically. We have done various things with her over the years(working, saving, tithing) but it's "crunch time" so to speak, so I would like to get a few ideas. I'm thinking about ideas on managing accts, personally going to the bank, types of accts and things of that nature. Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!:bigear:
  4. check here: http://belladia.typepad.com/crafty_crow/2008/11/advent-calendar.html Enjoy :D
  5. My 15dd has a virgin mobile. She started out with a very basic plan and phone. Last Christmas she upgraded to a different phone and plan. She bought the original phone at Target, but went to Radio Shack to upgrade her phone and plan. She (who is a little social butterfly) was happy with the plan and phone and able to afford it all on her own. :hurray: The minutes and texting also "roll over" if you top up prior to the deadline. HTH:001_smile:
  6. I am looking for more information about natural health issues. What is your favorite website, book, or magazine that keeps you updated and informed on the latest topics related to optimum natural health in regards to healthy foods, products, and medical issues? Thanks :)
  7. Is there a specific kid's sport or activity that she can do on a regular basis? Something that she's interested in. Perhaps soccer, cheerleading, gymnastics, swimming. Activity and exercise will go a long way. Just my $0.02.:001_smile:
  8. I second The Lady and Sons!! Yummo!:D It was worth the wait..Good ole southern food.
  9. a box of activities ONLY used during schooltime. things like lacing cards. Lauri blocks, puzzles, cards, coloring books. this worked well when my 5dd wasyounger and I was teaching my oldest dd. There is a website with activities. i can't remember it but if you google preschool activity bags, you may find it. I hope this helps.
  10. A great book related to this topic is Not Becoming My Mother by Ruth Reichl found here: http://www.amazon.com/Not-Becoming-My-Mother-Things/dp/1594202168/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top It's an easy read, and gives a lot of insight to this topic. The author found many of her mothers notes, letters, etc after her death. IMO,highly recommended for moms for more reasons than one...:glare:
  11. My 5.5dd is reading well and enjoys it.To give you an idea of level. She is almost finished with Abeka's 1st First grade reader (Fun With Pets). I also alternate reading with HOP readers, Starfall.com. She does well, but I think she can increase her fluency with two-vowel words. I am curious as to how often I should have her read aloud each day. We have been doing it during school time, and I read to her throughout the day and at bedtime. I think if I add in another time when she reads aloud this may help. Any ideas, tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.:)
  12. This is our 9th year home schooling. We out source two classes for 15dd at a well estalished co-op this year. We also have a 5dd who is a thriving K'er.:001_smile: With activities, schoolwork etc. I have to find time to have a little time for myself and other interests. I almost burned out a couple of years ago. Beware!:willy_nilly:
  13. Talking Letter Factory worked here too! It was a huge help. dd knew all her letters and sounds before age 3. She is now 5.4
  14. I am late posting, but mine is finally up on my blog. :D
  15. When we began homeschooling my oldest dd after 1st grade(she is now 15), we used the Abeka curriculum because her school had used it and it was an easy transition. We used Abeka's language program, and personally with the exception of the writing portion(we used writing strands), and the ton of review, it is a solid program. I think around 5th or 6th grade we switched to Rod & Staff. My dd just needed a change, but we found it to be a solid program as well. Some of the advantages of R&S is there writing portion is better, it is non-consumable (so you could possibly re-use with other children) and the cost was very reasonable. It is also recommended in TWTM You can view samples here http://www.rodandstaffbooks.com/list/Rod_and_Staff_Curriculum/?gclid=CIu1xcHG0ZwCFRJD5godJxrHHg I hope that this is helpful to you.:)
  16. Primary Art by MaryAnn Kohl look here:http://www.amazon.com/Primary-Art-Its-Process-Product/dp/0876592833/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1251157670&sr=8-1
  17. I have a 15dd who is a lefty. It has been interesting I must say.:D She was in private school pre k- 1st and they used Abeka and began cursive in Kindergarten. Her penmanship wasn't the best for quite a while, but now she has very nice handwriting. She is very math/science oriented as Chemmommy stated above. The two biggest challenges that we had were: 1. writing with erasable pens; I thought this would be cool for her around 3rd grade, but her hand would slide over the already written words and would greatly smear the erasable ink! 2. teaching my left handed dd to crochet!! We checked out every book and video from the library and I just could not teach her. Finally, I essentially gave up, and SHE perservered and taught herself. She is now an excellent crocheter.:hurray: Lefties think differently, and keep things very interesting.:D
  18. Thank you both for your input on Hewitt's syllabus. I have placed my order, joined the yahoo group and am happily waiting for the delivery.:hurray:
  19. I am planning to use BJU materials for US history for my 15dd. I was wondering if the syllabus from Hewitt's would be helpful. How is it is set up? Does the student use it independently? Since they don't give any samples, it is hard to tell if it would be useful to me. Any insight on this syllabus or suggestions would be helpful. Thanks in advance.:001_smile:
  20. Hi Vicki,

I was reading an old post of yours regarding Hewitt's US History syllabus(BJU). I will be using BJU for US history for my 15dd and am considering purchasing the syllabus. Hewitt's website doesn't give much information, so I am wondering if you'd mine giving me a little feedback on the syllabus. How is it set up? Is the parent heavily involved? Pro's and Con's in your opinion.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Andi:)

  21. I am considering using Saxon 1 along with Singapore Earlybird 2B with 5dd. (I have yet to figure out how to do this) I currently have the TM (bought used). We already have a big colorful poster size calendar that is helping my dd realize what day we have activities etc. She knows her days of the week and months already. She can count and identify 1-100. What would the meeitng book add? Or what could I add to save a little $. ;) I also need to purchase the workbooks. DD loves color, and hands on activities and she catches on quickly, so I am trying to keep things interesting for her. Thanks in advance for suggestions and ideas.:)
  22. Thanks for all the great selections!:D It will be hard to narrow things down, but I will make final decisions this week so that I can make plans and begin reading over the summer.;)
  23. I am looking for approximately 5 literature selections to go along with American History for my 15dd. We will be using BJU history, and I'd like to add whole literature. DD will be taking an outside Brit Lit course (mostly for writing purposes) where she will also be reading 6 books. Please share your "must reads". Thanks:001_smile:
  24. I have been looking at this as an option for American History for my 15dd. For those who have used it, do you find it rigorous enough for your high schooler? Is it teacher friendly? Can you give me a few pros and cons. I like the way it is written from a conservative christian perspective, and incorporates Bible and lit. Any thoughts on the program would be appreciated.:bigear:
