  1. I'm using a very recent textbook for my classes and it's very different than what I learned back in the 80's, loosely into the 90's. I think part of it is the progress in DNA - the Human Genome Project was still an ongoing thing when I was in school, it wasn't completed until 2013. Classification is now based on Cladistics and ancestry rather than physical characteristics, which brings evolution and natural selection much more to the forefront. Plus evolution has now been observed in birds and amphibians, not just bacteria/single cell organisms/invertebrates. I did get some evolution in school. It was definitely presented as underlying many other concepts but definitely doesn't seem to have gotten the emphasis it does now.
  2. Hello. This is the first chance I've had to spend much time here today. I went and worked out with dd, then had to clean up and load new software on 5 computers, then had to vacuum, wash some dishes, and clean the bathroom (all that at the science center). Then came home and I've been planning for my Algebra class tomorrow. I'm on dinner break. We ordered pizza but I got cavatelli and broccoli. I didn't plan any school for the kids for this week. I'm tired.
  3. There is an interview available that goes into how they handled the filming with the actresses involved. They evidently did a lot to make sure the girls were okay and comfortable with the process. I haven't seen the movie so I don't really want to say anything more until I do.
  4. https://youtu.be/ox30w2lOaqw This is one of my daughters dances. ETA: they got top senior duet for this at Nationals.
  5. My oldest was a competitive dancer for 18 years (from 4 years old until graduating high school, then 4 years in college). And that is over the top and way more inappropriate than anything I saw in all those years (we even did StarPower competition). I definitely saw some questionable things, but nothing that went that far.
  6. I'm done working for the day. It's 9:15 pm. I'll relax a while then go to bed since I am meeting dd at 7:30 tomorrow morning. I need to do some work setting up computers for classes, then finish up the planning for my last 4 classes. Two are pretty much done I just need to check things and print things. One is outlined and just needs some fill-in but that's a twice a week class so more work anyway. And one I've barely started but is similar to other classes so I can probably cannibalize those ones at least a little bit. I keep feeling like I"m forgetting something and it's driving me crazy.
  7. My kids have a ton of online friends associated with either games they play or fandoms they follow. They seem pretty happy with that state of friendships. Otherwise they have some acquaintance level friends through classes or 4-H.
  8. Hello, I'm just checking in while eating my lunch. I feel bad, my mother called and wanted to go out for pizza today. One we aren't going out to eat anywhere despite it being legal now. And two, I have soooo much work to do and a serious deadline to do it in. I just can't take the time out.
  9. Okay time to get to work. If you see my on here before 1pm (lunch time), yell at me.
  10. Can you tell I'm procrastinating a little bit? I'm still drinking my tea and can't really do work while I"m still drinking my tea because I need both hands. So you guys are stuck listening to me babble. My tea pot leaks all over the place when I pour. Why would it do that? I had the same one before and it didn't do that. It's a glass tea pot.
  11. The sun can't decide if it wants to come out or not. One minute it's dark and gloomy and I turn on the light. The next it's like I'm in a spotlight with the sun blaring in (skylight). It needs to make up its mind so I can decide if I want to move.
  12. I didn't watch Captain America last night. Instead I finished a book. It was okay. Something that was a Kindle freebie at some point that loaded up to have something to read while dd was at TKD and it was raining. I didn't like it enough to buy the rest of the series, especially considering the last book isn't done yet. The first book had a semi-wrap-up that I'm good with leaving it at that. I'm trying not to start large books or ones that I'll feel the need to finish right away while I have so much work to do and classes are starting. It's rough though. I really really like to read.
  13. Any non videos about the clipboard system? It looks interesting but I can't stand watching videos.
  14. We have one that is not set up for automatic switching or whole house. It's a portable that is in a shed on the side of the house. When it's needed, we wheel it out of the shed, turn it on and run extension cords through the window. I had to start it myself in our last hurricane because dh was away and it wasn't bad at all. I had to get a neighbor to help get it out of the shed because it's heavy and it's just gravel so didn't roll well. We have one plug right by the window it comes in with our internet, tv, snakes heat pad and some charging stations so we can switch that over easily. We run another cord to our fridge so we don't lose food and to some lights. We eventually want to get a whole house one that runs off propane but that's a very expensive set-up and we haven't been ready for that yet. We don't lose power more than a few times a year usually. We do have a well so we do lose water when the power is out but we get buckets of water if we know it could go out so we can still flush, and bottled water to drink (usually my science center has power even if home doesn't so we can grab water there usually). We have propane for our stove so we can still cook.
  15. Morning, Happy Saturday. Guess what I'm doing today!! The same thing I do every day.....Try and get ready for classes. (said in Pinky and the Brain voices). It's crazy now but the last two years I basically ended up finalizing class plans the night before. Don't want to do that again so I'm trying to get as much done before I start as possible. It will make the next few months much much easier.
  16. Definitely it's okay to go at his pace. I always feel like we are way behind when I go to the high school board so I tend to only stop in with a specific question. My son is a sophomore this year and is definitely missing a few things. But I also know he's unlikely to do a traditional college experience, and extremely unlikely to be applying for any rigorous programs. So I don't worry about it. (easier said than done, I know).
  17. I was doing the challenges for a while but then I stopped getting the notifications. Are they still going on?
  18. The FIL stuff stinks, but CONGRATULATIONS on the new house.
  19. We seem to have a lot of flies right now. Which is annoying because we bug bombed not that long ago. We're going to have to do it again pretty soon. Not until the new heat system is in because I"m sure they'll be going in and out a lot doing that. I think I may watch Captain America with my beer. I think I"m done with work for the evening. Even though you guys didn't confirm and made me look at Google to make sure it was in fact still Friday.
  20. I probably could but we ordered the right one from Amazon and it won't be here until Sunday so Dh can just do it when he gets home. It was already 5pm here when I said that. it's almost 7pm now. I have beer but haven't had any yet because I'm still working on a class and since I have absolutely NO tolerance for alcohol, I will get absolutely no work done once I have it so I'm being a responsible adult and waiting. Today is still Friday right? I have two more days to get things ready.
  21. Dh has left for his moms. I told the kids they are on their own for meals for the next two days and I'm ordering take-out on Sunday. I have so much work to do (I know I know, I've had months). They are 13 and 15 so certainly capable. We had to go pick up his car at the shop and he left right from there in my car so I'm stuck with his truck again. Shouldn't be bad, I just have to go meet older dd in the morning to work out and maybe make one trip to the store. I'll have to see what stuff I really need for the first couple days and what can wait. I don't really want to go to BJ's or the AFSA on the weekend. Dh tried to move our washer/dryer before he left but it turns out the plug we ordered was the wrong one (three prong not four prong) so he ran to Home Depot to get the right plug and installed it but then it turned out to be the wrong 4 prong (different shape to one of the prongs) so I have no washer/dryer for the weekend. It's been a heck of a day.
  22. I LOVE Halloween, LOVE Supernatural, really liked the movie The Cabin in the Woods. But I don't like to read horror as much as I did when I was younger. I read a ton of Stephen King and Clive Barker when younger, now I can handle Dean Koontz and Robin Cook type stuff at most. I can't read any books where kids get hurt, regardless of whether it's horror or not. Pet Sematary is one I definitely can't read or watch anymore. I would decorate like crazy for Halloween if our house wasn't extremely small and Christmas didn't already disrupt things for months at a time.
  23. I have a bag like that sitting on my couch but it's a tool bag. My end pockets have my phone, my glasses, and some post it notes. Dh's holds the tv remotes. In the big middle is a box of tissues, a notebook, some lotion, a few other things that rotate. The side pockets have pens, pencils, charging cords, my allergy meds, scissors, etc. It basically stays sitting on the couch but is easy to move if we have company over.
