  1. uh -yup! I did go to the ob/gyn for a pap and ultrasound - nothing there. I joined WomentoWomen and use their vitamins and Herbal Equilibrium supplements. Progesterone cream helped for a cycle or 2 but I stayed on it tooooo long. Be careful about progesterone cream - it helps IF you need it. Can you get saliva testing to find out what your hormonal status is?
  2. Yes, we are using Harvey's now and I will continue with that. We started this year wiht Winston 1 and enjoyed it a great deal. It has really prepared both of us for CW!
  3. The state we lived in at the beginning of our homeschool journey required we keep "relevant books, materials, quizes and writing samples" for 3 years. The state we currently live in requires us to be a part of an umbrella school. Each "school" is different in what it requires. Mine states: "parents are responsible for quality education and the burden of proof of said education resides with the parent". Okay. . . . .? So how long, how much, and what type of examples would you keep???
  4. What is available for 7th grade health?
  5. I am planning 7th grade LA. So far I have: Lightning Lit 7 CW Homer B MegaWords cont from this year. Dd reads very, very well. She is ahead of grade level in reading and comprehension. But, she is a terrible speller. Those of you who "know" me here, can probably figure out where she gets that from! IS the above enough for LA? Is the grammar in CW Homer B adequate. She is very solid in diagramming and parsing. I would like to review some of the "odder" punctuation rules (semi-colons, colons, the things you dont see as often). What, if anything should I add?
  6. I am doing a video class and really enjoying it. But, I know nothing about the dance. What are some good dvds to get to learn. My PT recommended it for back and abs - plus I am finding it is fun!
  7. I also agree - we have loved DITHOR for the past 3 years!
  8. I have really liked Spectrum. The lessons are short, to the point, and engaging.
  9. I added Trail Guides to Biblical Geography and Victor Journey Through the Bible with MOH vol 1. But other than the usual family devotions, I did not add additional Bible to vol 1. We were doing BJU bible at the time - which is a nice curriculum if you like that style. But, I found it rather confusing for all of us studying different times/periods/themes. Definately, vol 2 would need additional Bible.
  10. I started running last fall when my husband got serious about marathon training. After a trip to the ER for back problems and a solid year of pain, I am no longer a runner. Sigh. For those of you who can - take very good care of yourself and your back. Best of wishes
  11. I did not like this program. It moved very, very fast and the chants were really too fast. I noticed we werent learning a single word but a whole jumble of words together. In other words, my dc had trouble translating a single word - they had to go through the whole chant and try to piece together a word. The grammar was very ambitious for a younger elementary student. I have the older dvds which were okay. I wish the lessons were longer with more explainations. Also, the text had a tremendous number of errors. I'm told newer editions have resolved this problem however. We learned some vocabulary but very little grammar was retained. For the money, I felt like we did not learn what we should have.
  12. Absolutely go to an opthamologist and dont leave until you get an answer. Seriously, dont let any doc get away with not completely answering your questions. I had a similar issue for about 2 years as well. I kept hearing about my age, my glucose levles, fatigue, etc. Finally I told my new eye doc I wasnt leaving until I knew what was causing the problem. She looked a bit stunned and said something like "well, or course not." It took 3 appt on 3 seperate days and several tests to find out teh cause. Turned out to be a cornea problem. Yes, I will eventually need surgery, but thanks to great care that is specific to my problem, so far so good. In fact, I'm going tomorrow for my annual dialation exam and I do need new glasses! Do go to a good eye surgeon - not the Walmart guys. Nothing against the Walmart type docs, they are good at what they do (most anyway) but they are not surgeons and they do not look at the "zebras", just the routine.
  13. a good dvd or computer based language program for upper elementary and jr high?
  14. I've used Luther's Small Catechism. Granted it is Lutheran and we are not, but it is a good straightforward text. A Presbyterian friend uses the Westminster Catechism and is happy with that. John MacArthur has a very child friendly book covering "the big questions" like prayer, salvation, heaven, etc that I have used before - sorry I cant remember the name. It is in a question/answer format.
  15. The local news had a segment about saline rinses being as affective as decongestants. They recommended spraying the salt water sprays often throughout the day and drinking lots of water. HTH
  16. Quite a few accredited christian schools use BJU so I would think they would have to be on target with their scope and sequence. Just guessing here - but that would make sense to me. I know 2 public school teachers who now homeschool and have chosen BJU science because of the academic excellence of that program. HTH
  17. I thought the only difference was in the illustrations
  18. several of us are using the CW series. I love it, my dc love it. It is not an easy program to pick up and teach. Give yourself some time to digest the core. Aesop is easier to teach than Homer in my opinion. I use GWG with Aesop. Some folks use R/S. Do you have anything specific you want to know about it???
  19. Is it too hard for a 6th grader - no Is it too hard for a 6th grade mom - maybe We are doing HOmer A this year and I thought I would never learn how to teach it. My dd is doing wonderful work with it. She is enjoying it, learning a great deal, and actually enjoying it. But, it was really hard for me to learn. Someone here suggestested outlining the lessons by day and steps. That really helped and now I feel confident to teach it. But, it is not easy to start. It is not "plug and play" Give yourself some time to learn it. I wish I had discovered it last year so I could spend the summer going over the Core. I did spend a chunk of time over Christmas break digesting the Core. But, Homer A should be fine for a 6th grader. I am also doing Aesop A with my 3rd grader and it is easy to do. Perhaps a little too easy for her, but she is doing well and enjoying it.
  20. You are in good company. It is really upsetting to me how so many folks who call themselves christian can act in such a way. Jesus talked to everybody - the only folks he blasted were those "playing" church (the pharases). They should treat you at least with kindness - perhaps even see you as someone to invite or welcome to services in genuine care and consideration. Unfortnately, even though I attend a church, I get treated very poorly. Here are some of my "favorite" one liners I get: "oh, you go to *that* church" "oh, you dont go to *ALL* the church activites" "you arent from here" "you must be at both morning and evening services for *it* to mean anything" Forgive my bit of rant here and please no flames or negative feedback. I just want to encourage the original poster by saying you are not alone in the snubbery (is that even a word) and I am sorry you are treated in such a way.
  21. I have thought about it. But, she really enjoys it. She gets so excited about the lessons. I have talked to her about skipping but she really doesnt want to miss any of the fables.
  22. I was really unsure what to do. I couldnt see the program, didnt know anybody using it and couldnt get a clear picture in my mind from the info on the net. So we jumped into Homer A. It has been just fine. She is doing very well with the writing and the grammar. We had completed BJU grammar and Winston 1 so her grammar was solid. But, writing was a real struggle for her. We have been able to do 1 lesson per week up until Week 9. That lesson took 2 weeks and I know Week 10 will take 2 weeks as well. Not sure if this will be the trend the remaining lessons or not. I use Harvey's as a grammar review. We recently started Aesop A with my 3rd grader. It is very easy for her. She is having no difficulties at all and I wonder if I should have started her in Aesop B. I am doing GWG 3 with her and it is a fine fit. She is enjoying the program quite a bit. But, again, it is not very challenging so far - we are on week 4. HTH!
  23. I actually used it last year. It is a very good program and I do think you need the cds. It is not as "technical" as Abeka. I found it easier to teach. But, it is a music class. It does teach theory which I find difficult to teach. My dc enjoyed the music appreciation part and did learn some thing from it. Is it worth the cost?? Not for us. I bought it used and purchased the cds from BJU. It really wasnt worth the cost for what we did. So, I guess it depends upon what you want to do with it.
