Opinions: Johnathan Park, Reading Detective, Mind Benders?
anewday replied to Alison in KY's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
My 10yo dd is taking a Co-Op class on creation science and they are using the Jonathan Park CD series. She LOVES it and has learned a lot! I echo the "cheesy" sentiment however. -
My oldest (age 10, grade 5) has been doing Rod and Staff grammar since grade 2 (and currently we're taking a break and starting up with English 5 in fall). Next year for grade 6, I am leaning strongly towards doing CLE Reading 6. Right now I've been doing some of Susan's WWE with her...she also does narrations for SOTW assignments. I think her writing has been very good thus far and she seems to have a good grasp on summarizing a topic in 3 to 5 sentences. I know SWB's review on R&S several years back said she recommended adding Writing Strands or IEW by grade 5 at the latest. So my question....would using CLE Reading 6 and R&S English give enough writing instruction and practice? Or would I want to ADD something like Writing Strands or Wordsmith Apprentice to those? :001_huh:

Look up cellulitis...not saying that's at all it, but as a precaution. I had a rash start small on the back of my hand 10 years ago that spread up my arms and all over my body. SO intensely itchy and miserable.... Update when you can! :grouphug:

Darn! I thought I had next year all set!

I coordinated our literature and history this year and I wish I hadn't. It was overkill, I think. She needed to read literature keyed to the history program as well as books with our language program - all historical. So she had to read selections from 2 historical books daily with narrations or Q&A from both. Too much history. LOL My .02 FWIW. :) -
Was it an easy transition from FLL to R&S? With my oldest dd, she has done exclusively R&S, but with dd #2, I've been using FLL1-2. I need to decide when to transition her from FLL to R&S. I'm leaning on continuing with FLL for 3 and possibly 4...then going to R&S. Grade 4 for R&S is pretty heavy... I haven't looked through FLL3 and 4 yet in order to make a decision...but I wanted to get some feedback from anyone who has BTDT as well. Thanks!

Thank you SO much, Gillian! This was a wonderfully helpful review! I have to get this book! :D Now.....I am so curious.....why are other languages unnecessary? Is it simply due to the fact Latin is learned so that is the foreign language, or is there a reason why all other languages shouldn't be learned? I was wondering if LCC would work if we used a different language at the center of it - or a few...like French, Greek, some Latin...maybe a few years of each....

They've revised ECC, but when I did it 2 years ago, I disliked it overall. It was not CMish. I didn't care for ECC because of the books they used. I didn't care for the Hero Tales much, but that was just personal preference. I liked Window on the World, but for some reason, I had a hard time implementing it since it was usually only scheduled for one day a week (or less) and wasn't on the schedule for the rest of the week in terms of praying for the people group we read about. It's easily rectified, just pencil it in or add it to your morning devotions - I just forgot about it more often than not. The bulk of the read alouds are from the Usborne books and altas's, which are NOT easy to read aloud from. They're distracting, disjointed and uninteresting. Usborne is great for individual reading and learning...processing...but not as a read aloud. It got old quick. When I do world geography again, I'm going to look into A Child's Geography and beef it up with supplemental books. That said, I don't think it would be too much to do ECC and SOTW, especially if you're doing history only 3 days a week.

Drawbacks/Cons of using literature for language arts?
anewday posted a topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
The biggest concern I've come across is that it makes reading literature a chore for kiddos. I'm not saying whether that's valid or not - I think it would vary per child, what literature is used, how much workload is given etc.... I'm drawn to using a literature approach (specifically Total Language Plus) but want to make the decision with as much info - pro and con - as possible. Thoughts? -
Can you share your 5th/ 6th grade curriculum ?
anewday replied to paulcindy's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I'm still working on it and things aren't finalized yet...but here's what I'm thinking thus far... Bible: No idea yet! Language Arts: Total Language Plus (covers literature, vocab, spelling, composition and some grammar) Rod and Staff English Possibly Institute for Excellence in Writing Math: Rod and Staff Math Foreign Language: French (not sure which program yet) History: SOTW3 Science: Exploring Creation: Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day and Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day Other: Artistic Pursuits, Color the Classics, Nature Study, Typing instruction as needed.... -
Thank you so much for this review! It sounds wonderful! :)

I am so intriqued by this book, however, Latin has been a bit of a struggle for us. I plan to revisit it when my 10yo is 12 or 13 and look into taking an online course with a real instructor. Even at that though, it may only be for one or two years (unless she takes to it and wants to keep studying it!). I am looking into having her begin learning either French or Spanish next year, if that makes any difference... Can LCC be followed without having Latin at it's core? Or is that just defeating the entire purpose of LCC? :D

I second Stacy and Jesse. The R&S books are fantastic and cheap.
