  1. I'm the one that posted about consumer math. But I think that math would be in an Alg 2 book. The student says she also did well with Jacobs Elem Alg (sorry I didn't say that in previous post; she's one of my new kids...). So, my question should be does anyone have something that worked well for a student who needs lots of verbal instructions following Jacobs Alg? I found out online that Foerster's Alg and Trig is rec after Jacobs Alg. Has anyone used that? Does it have plenty of explanation like Jacobs? Please help... Sandy

  3. We have a high school student working very well with Teaching Textbooks (she's spec needs, so I realize this doesn't cover material as extensive as many other programs). She wants to go to community college and is now working through TT's Precalculus. But it doesn't have a strong consumer math chapter, which is required. She needs a chapter including simple, compound, continuous compound interest; annuities; amortization; etc. The issue is that it needs to be very step-by-step so that she'll be able to really get it. A more relaxed approach that takes longer to get would be fine. Are there any resources, programs, or textbooks that anyone has used that would cover this topic more thoroughly than would a life skills approach? Sandy

  6. Thank you! I will try guided access. It sounds like it is exactly what I need.
  7. I've had some luck using fresh bedding that we have on hand for our pet rats. Also, though I haven't tried this personally, I've read that dryer sheets work. In either case, I'd suggest that you put the book in a sealed bag and prepare yourself for it to take several weeks or even longer, depending on the degree of damage.
  8. I am fostering an 11-year-old special needs boy who arrived with an iPad. I would like to use it more for learning, using play apps as breaks in between. However, I can't figure out a way to lock the play apps temporarily so he's not jumping into them constantly. I have strategies that work fine as long as I remain with him, but I want to work toward a visual timer so he can self-manage for brief periods of time -- like my jumping up to check dinner in the oven. I can uninstall and reinstall apps, of course, but he works in 5-minute blocks interspersed with quick reinforcement apps. Is there a way to temporarily block an app for 3 minutes or so? I would like to use the iPad for the reinforcement because it is HIGHLY motivating for him at the moment. Also, are there any visual timers that anyone has used and would recommend? Sandy
  9. lol -- I will give it a try tomorrow. Thank you!
  10. Well, shoot, if I could do something like a screenshot, I probably wouldn't need to ask such a newbie question. heehee. You know how the home screen has dimensions, up, down, and from side to side? Now on the right side is about an inch of screen that is blocked out. In this blocked -out area is the time. I must have turned it on accidentally, but I don't know how to turn it on and off. I have BEEN LOOKING for a way to have the time displayed on my screen, but I don't know how I turned it on.... Sometimes I would like the time to be hidden.
  11. I can't find this online, probably because it's too simple, but suddenly the date and time is taking up one end of the home screen. I can't figure out how I turned it on or how to turn it off. Does anyone know? TIA!
  12. We pop it in olive oil n add old bay. A spicy treat!
  13. I just bought a Garmin nuvi 2455LMT GPS, but using the suction cup to lodge it to the windshield is a bit unreliable. I would like something I don't have to worry about -- but when I looked online, I quickly became overwhelmed with all of the options, etc. Does anyone have a dashboard mount (my car's dash is just a bit sloped, but the passenger seat would be a fine option for me in that case) that they find to be stable? Oh, and maybe a protective case? Amazon has one for a 5-inch GPS. My GPS is 4.3 inches. I don't know if I would have to pack it with a cloth or something...I mean, would it slide around and be damaged in a case? I have been learning to use this all evening. Man, I am so not a natural at this! Sandy
  14. Hahaha. I am actually on a Mommy Break and am visiting my husband's parents. That is exactly what I would normally do -- hand it to one of the kiddies! The buttons on the bottom of the screen of the Apps Store? I had no idea...all I had to do was touch the favorites button. OMG, I so stink at this!! Thanks so much for answering my post. ROTFL Sandy
