  1. I am trying to make up my mind here about history. I have 1st and 4th to teach-both girls who like to read and do arts and crafts. I thought that the HO would be good to do with both and that pulls in SOTW. I really liked that TOG had the same lessons for all ages but branched each lesson to accomodate different levels but it looks $$$. Then I thought do IEW History that matches the SOTW I do and add in the trade books that SL suggests.....or just do SL altogether? My head hurts. I am looking for classical using trade books and some arts and craft type stuff. JUST TELL ME WHAT TO USE!!!!
  2. This is a funny question b/c when my sister gets married I am giving her and her DH a CASE of Charmin ultra strong! They seriously will NOT use another kind. Cottonelle leaves residue on her "hooha" she says.
  3. Wow that's a great question with some great answers. I can see where it is going to be a struggle with my own kids. Just the little bit of work I have gotten DS to do with the other kids home b/c of snow has been like pulling teeth. I think it is so hard for them to be in work mod when they are in their own house. I only have 5 months so he better get his act together!!:D
  4. I'm curious as to what the history pockets are all about. I was going to use this next year with the girls...but maybe not? Perhaps TOG? I was going to get SOTW either way but wanted to have a more structured approach.
  5. Okay I think I have settled on using IEW US History 1 to incorporate the novels that Sonlight suggests with the Abeka US History we got. Figured I might as well kill 2 birds with 1 stone here!
  6. Can anyone give me a round about figure on how much this costs? I want to do it for the girls next year and have no clue if it will fit in our budget. TIA!!
  7. drastically what would you use? He is a reluctant but very good reader and is not great with writing paragraphs/stories/reports. He wants to go to middle school so I need to make the most of the next 5 months. Suggestions??
  8. Amen! Doesn't change much for 14 year olds either!
  9. I would say that the gum is swollen over the tooth right now. I wouldn't worry about it. Not like the tooth can go anywhere! Sometimes they break through and then the gum actually flaps back over. Really gross when they lose a whole chunk of gum too-bleh.
  10. I don't want to sound like I am on a soapbox here but here goes: Eczema is a SYMPTOM not a condition that can be cured or treated. Allergies are the underlying cause and you need to discover the culprit before you can really address it. My kids have huge food allergy issues and eczema was always the marker. Oddly 2 of them react to milk yet don't test positive for the allergy. You may need to try remove dairy for at least 3 weeks so it exits his system and then try something else. When we met with our allergist at Georgetown University Hospital he was really firm about this. There is a girl in DDs dance class that is covered with eczema to the point where people stare at her. Family refuses to get rid of the dogs b/c they say that isn't the problem. If my kid looked like that I would be ripping out carpet and everything else on the list of usual suspects.
  11. My mom is the same age and in very good health so it is hard to imagine her losing her vitality. :grouphug:
  12. Wow that is uncalled for. It seems like he is punishing your DS for his own dislike of HSing. Why not cut the kid some slack and realize that he needs to adjust after not being in a large setting like that? Until you are faced with absolute ridiculous school circumstances you can't begin to appreciate HSing. I was a nay sayer until my DS ran into big issues and have totally realigned my thinking! He needs a reality check. Jerk
  13. I have tried every migraine med there is with no relief. Simple Excedrin is what works. There is caffeine which is an issue in the evening so for that I take vicodin. Many times I can relieve the pain but not the nausea so I still puke with the vicodin.
  14. Okay every time I think I know what the heck I need to do I get stuck. Here are my questions: 1. If DS will only be HSed through the end of this year and then wants to go to middle school should I just do the American History that he would have gotten in PS? It doesn't seem to make sense to switch to the ancient studies for just 1 year does it? 2. If I did switch to Ancient Studies is there a system that classical HSers use? The vagueness of what the WTM lays out scares me to DEATH! Does anyone use the method they suggest? Sorry for all the questions....
  15. I will buy it then! I have the library copy(totally brand new and never been read I think) and just wanted an easy access list for borrowing/buying books. Guess I have some typing to do!
  16. Okay! I didn't know if I was missing something on the site. Time to start organizing my list!!
  17. is there a place where I can see all the books they suggest using? I was going to buy a copy just for that reason but I only need the lists....
  18. I often drive at night with my sunglasses on for those same reasons. Is it what they call night blindness?
  19. I have no advice b/c I can't even get a basket of laundry out away in a timely manner. I am so ADD yet when I was a teacher I could be organized and focused. That is why I am choosing WTM method. Unit studies and things that are "open ended" will just not work for me! I know me too well.
  20. I have been wading through all the info in the book and find that this approach will be the best for me since it is more systematic and less open-ended. I can't let go of the teacher in me! I am just curious if anyone here is a die hard follower of the method and if they are getting the results they want. I plan on doing this completely with DD (5) next year and maybe start DD(9) who doesn't want to go back after next year for middle/HS. Can you jump in at the 5th grade level? She is weak in reading/writing so I thought perhaps drop down to the 4th grade stuff to start?
  21. Okay I only have 6 kids and I can't imagine doing what you have been doing! Isn't the beauty of HSing the fact that you can just work it around stuff like this? I am new here but I find an underlying attitude that "relax and don't stress" is the best way to handle it! :grouphug:
  22. I love my KA pro but I find I need a bigger bowl when making a double batch of CC oatmeal cookies. I don't do bread in it b/c I cheat and use the bread maker/dough cycle. I couldn't live without mine and love it for grinding meat as well. We get 1/2 a cow 2 times per year and all those roasts...ugh. Grind them suckers to ground beef.
  23. From what I understand Rt 29 isnt great either. The main road through Warrenton(29 bypass) is like driving on snow mogols-HUGE bumps everywhere! With the snow they are expecting Tuesday night is will be a roll of the dice!
