  1. I am considering using this book so I would like to hear others' opinions as well.
  2. Look at www.educationunboxed.com under the division videos. They will help her get the concept of what you are doing.
  3. Along the lines of the Sir Cumference books, any of the books that say "A Math Adventure" under the title are good. I'm not sure if they are a series or not, but they do seem to all be related. We have "The Miltiplying Menace" books, "What's Your Angle, Pythagorous?", "Cut Down to Size at High Noon" (my kids love that one), "A Place for Zero", and "Amanda Bean's Amazing Dream" in the Math Adventure series. We also have a ton of Mathstart books by Stuart J. Murphy. These are quite good as well. And Anno's Math Games books are very good. The "Greedy Triangle" is also a favorite here. Also, have a look at Crewton Ramone's House of Math (a website). Otherwise I think everyone else's suggestions are excellent. If you go with what has been mentioned on this thread you will have a very good start!
  4. This is great and very timely for us. Thanks for posting!
  5. Is the Teaching the Classics being referred to the one that C.S. Lewis wrote? If not, does someone have a link to the one being discussed? Thanks!
  6. I think you could. I use Math Mammoth on an ipad and I have used Lively Latin in the past. From what I remember about it, I don't think there would be any problem at all.
  7. I've only encountered it one other time. It was a monastery.
  8. I was never on the social group but have been intrigued by the threads with Circe Institute and Andrew Kern. Thank you for gleaning this information! It will be going onto my Kindle for reading at a later date.
  9. Thanks! He's my friend's kid. She's out of town and I was watching him for his grandmother. He fell out of tree. He was so funny before they put him under to set his arm. He kept saying, "When are you going to put me down?". We were laughing so hard and then the doctor said something about shooting him in the head. The whole thing was hilarious. Back to the original subject... :D
  10. I'm in the ER with a kid with a broken arm. They gave him zofran and pepcid.
  11. I take pictures of my random lists and put them in Evernote. That helps a lot.
  12. Thanks for your replies everyone. Things have already gotten busy concerning the move so I haven't had the chance to respond. It sounds like this could be a very good move on the home schooling front for us. I appreciate you all taking the time to reply to my post!
  13. We just found that dh got a job in the Nashville area, near Mt. Juliet and Murfreesboro. I am trying to find good homeschooling groups or activities in the area and anything else that might be a help with our transition. TIA!
  14. That's super cool! I would let it go as long as I could tolerate it. And since I got one of my kids an ice tray one year, I could see getting n interested child a stack of plasric containers for Christmas. :D
  15. We get access through Tennessee Virtual Academy. My son uses it a lot. It would be worth the cost to pay for it, though.
  16. No, this is actually a researched based curriculum that is being written to help with transition. I have run into the fact that there is mostly research on early intervention as well. When I can find documents about teens there is very little information with lots of information beside it about small children. And most often, I can't find actual numbers regarding teens with ASD. I am off to look at the teen study. Thanks for posting this!
  17. Thanks for clarifying! I felt like I was taking some sort of risk by asking so it made my heart drop a little when you responded. In response to what you said above: Yes, it is about transitioning to adulthood. Transition services should start at about age 14 and there are various criteria that must be met. I think most of these are only being complied with on paper. I am trying to find out what, where, and when people's specific experiences have been.
  18. Well, now I'm embarrassed! I guess I thought that people used some services from the state as well as home schooling (we have done both with our special needs kids). I'm really sorry if it was inappropriate. I don't know much about the autism world and am trying to learn. Anyway, the official reports about the services show very little real data as far as how children respond and how well they really do with the services they actually do receive. States self report and the federal government just trusts that the data is correct. I was asking so that I could have an idea of which way to go with my research as far as which states truly are a problem and which ones truly help individuals. I am coming up short with any real information. FWIW, the person who has asked me to do this has a daughter on the autism spectrum. Her motivation is to come up with a good program to actually help kids while involving families in the process. I appreciate your response. :001_smile:
  19. I have a new job as a researcher. Right now I am involved in a research project to find out how well states are doing with their transition programs for individuals on the autism spectrum. I am hoping to find out from some of you what your experience has been using those transition services. If you don't mind posting your state and your opinion of the services (or pming or emailing me) I would really appreciate it. Here are a couple of specific questions I'd also like to pick your brains about: 1. Does your state provide you with enough information to transition your child successfully? 2. At what age do the transition services (really) begin? 3. Have you been successful getting the services you need beginning at age 14? 4. Is the information organized in a usable way? 5. Anything else that you would want heard by experts who are working on this subject? I'm not an expert, just a peon who is helping the experts. The questions I posted above seem to be concerns from what I have gathered, but I wanted to check with the SN part of the Hive because I know how well informed many of you are (you have helped me in the past!). This is obviously not a serious scientific survey, but I am finding that the official information may be misleading and I need a clue as to which way to direct my thinking. Thanks in advance!
