  1. Please tell me more about what you mean by "odd in places." :) Thanks for the link! Awesome!
  2. Thank you for this suggestion. I've recently learned of The Great Courses and hadn't thought to check to see if they had on option for us.
  3. We have just changed our mind and will be reading sections of this book: http://www.amazon.com/Hippocratic-Writings-Penguin-Classics-Various/dp/0140444513/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top#_. It includes Aphorisms, but it also includes The Oath, The Canon, and other interesting Hippocratic works.
  4. We were able to check Aphorisms out from a local med school's library and another book that held portions of the material from Volume 8 and have decided to purchase Aphorisms. I am still interested in hearing from others who have studied these books.
  5. We have been talking about building a computer, but I was at a complete loss as to where to begin. Would you mind sharing the name of the course? How have you and your son like it? Any idea how much it ended up costing you (the computer)? Thanks so much. I'm looking forward to hearing about this.
  6. I'm still interested in thoughts on this topic. Volume 8 is $25 from Amazon. When buying two copies (one for me, one for son), the price is a little steep. If it's worth it, I'm willing, but I'd like to hear from others who have read Volume 8 or Aphorisms (the other option by Hippocrates listed in TWTM). I'm also curious if one of these is listed in TWTM by accident. Aphorisms is listed under the Ninth Grade Science Source Readings list. Volume 8 is listed in the Resources section under Biology (9th grade) Basic Texts. Is one a misprint? Thoughts? Anyone?
  7. I am preparing for high school science. My son is in the 8th grade. I've decided that the 8th grade will be a transition year, transitioning from logic to rhetoric studies. Thus, we are beginning some of the high school/rhetoric level suggestions in TWTM this year. I see there are many volumes of Hippocrates medical treatises available. Has anyone ventured into any of the others? (Copied from Amazon: The other works available in the Loeb Classical Library edition of Hippocrates are the following. Volume I: Ancient Medicine. Airs, Waters, Places. Epidemics 1 and 3. The Oath. Precepts. Nutriment. Volume II: Prognostic. Regimen in Acute Diseases. The Sacred Disease. The Art. Breaths. Law. Decorum. Physician (Ch. 1). Dentition. Volume III: On Wounds in the Head. In the Surgery. On Fractures. On Joints. Mochlicon. Volume IV: Nature of Man. Regimen in Health. Humours. Aphorisms. Regimen 1–3. Dreams. Volume V: Affections. Diseases 1–2. Volume VI: Diseases 3. Internal Affections. Regimen in Acute Diseases. Volume VII: Epidemics 2 and 4–7. Volume IV also contains the fragments of Heracleitus, On the Universe.) Volume VIII: Places in Man. Glands. Fleshes. Prorrhetic 1-2. Physician. Use of Liquids. Ulcers. Haemorrhoids and Fistulas. I am considering allowing my son to review the above volumes and pick whchever one interests him the most, but there must be a good reason SWB suggested Volume 8. Does anyone have any insight into this? Thank you!
  8. I'm impressed that some of you have found a search function at all. I'm still searching for the search function... :bored:
  9. Greetings, My DS12 is very interested in kinetic sculpture. He has recently finished the Fine Art Studio Sculpting kit by Kenneth Watson. I am interested in finding a similiar kit for my son that covers kinetic sculpting. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance,
  10. I guess I should have read further. I now know what GSWS is. :)
  11. I am looking for introductory Spanish curriculum for my DS12 (rising 7th grader). What is 'GSWS'? I am not familiar with the many abbreviations used in the messages. I LOVE the idea of subscribing to a bilingual magazine! Thanks for sharing this idea. I will have to look into something appropriate for my son. I'd appreciate any suggestions - both on curriculum and magazine options. I swear, this foreign language research (Latin & Spanish) is making my head spin.
  12. I'm not much help here as I am looking at Spanish curriculum too. I just wanted to thank you for writing out the names of the options and providing links to the curriculum. Very helpful to this 'hive' newby.
