Thanks everyone! Dina :001_smile: -
Hello All ~ Thanks for the wonderful feedback on the first post regarding CW. Now I'd like to know your thoughts about when to go. DD just turned 11 and we will be studying American History next year. She loves the Colonial period and has read some about the period such as Peter Marshall and American Girl books, choose Felicity for her American Girl doll, and will read A history of the United States and Its People this summer. Do you think it would be more advantagous to go before or after formally studying AH? THANKS! Dina :001_unsure:

Dina in Oklahoma replied to Dina in Oklahoma's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Thanks for the reply. I was blessed to purchase the combined teacher's manual and all of biology and physics from a hive member! Dina  -
Hi! If you have read my prior posts regarding science, you know I'm trying to get on track. I want to do RS4K biology 1rst followed by physics (summer) then McHenry The Elelments in the fall. My question is do I really need the teacher's manual? RS4K is pricy new and I haven't had any response to my request to buy. What do you think? THANKS! Dina :001_smile:

Colonial Williamsburg - Specifics
Dina in Oklahoma replied to Dina in Oklahoma's topic in General Education Discussion Board
:)Thank you ladies -- so very helpful! Anyone care to take a stab at cost ? Annyone willing to share what their trip cost?:w00t: Dina -
Hello ~ I have read the posts regarding Colonial Williamsburg and the surrounding areas and am playing with the idea of going. I have found a wealth of information about where to go, activities, etc. but I need some specifics. I live in Oklahoma and my family of five (including grandparents) would drive to the homeschool days in CW. My questions are ... 1) How much would you guesstimate the whole trip might cost (excluding gas) if we were to would stay in clean but not luxurious hotels and eat at cost effective resturants, IHOP etc? Cost for three days in CW ? $___________ Cost for five days in CW? $_____________ 2) Would you attend homeschool days in: February _____WHY? or September _____WHY? Thank you!!! Dina :001_smile:

All About Spelling vs. Spelling Workout
Dina in Oklahoma replied to EmmaNZ's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I posted this on another board this summer . . . Hello! It arrived yesterday and after reviewing it first hand, my daughter and I believe we have finally found the right program for her. I used Abeka phonics in 1rst to teach her to read. WRTR was used by her Christian school in 2nd and SWR was used by the "Blended Model" school she attended last year. My DD reads on an advanced level and has a high level of vocabulary but struggles with spelling. She always made A's in spelling because she is able to memorize well. In reviewing her writing assignments, I realized that she did not HOW to spell (using phonograms and spelling rules). After researching spelling programs for several months I selected Rod and Staff spelling because it reviews spelling rules and provides practice in breaking words down phonetically. I was pleased with my selection of R&S but still was not certain it would be enough; so I sent out a post and was referred to All About Spelling. Both WRTR and SWR are popular, but we did not have success with either. In my opinion, WRTR is an outstanding METHOD but it is too cumbersome to implement as a program. I prefer that precious time be spent learning the subject not a marking system. SWR was more user friendly, but still did not yield results for my DD; and as an educator with a background in curriculum development, the layout of SWR drove me crazy. The main reason I believe these systems did not work for my child is that she is primarily a visual learner and most spelling/phonics programs are auditory based. The fact that All About Spelling is multisensory was very appealing to us. My daughter immediately commented about the color tiles and the fact that AAS teaches the rules through doing. AAS is a method for learning and applying spelling/phonics. I plan to infuse the R&S lessons with AAS based on which phonograms are being taught. With a 1 year money back guarantee, I felt very comfortable making the purchase. Sorry for the length. Hope this helps~ Update: DD is doing extremely well with this program and enjoys doing it. It only takes about 15 minutes a day. I do not see it as teacher intensive in any way. Dina :001_smile: -
Hello! I have a couple questions please: 1) Approximately how much time does it take to complete The Elements? 2)Approximately how much time does it take to complete Carbon Chemistry? 3) Are lab sheets completed in Carbon Chemistry? PS. I'm looking for Carbon Chemistry! Thanks, Dina :001_smile:

Hello ~ After researching all summer I had settled on Real Science 4 Kids; but then I started second quessing (didn't want to use the same curricula for chemistry I and II, physics, and biology). So I purchased the John Hudson Tiner series which we very much like, to provide an overview of these subjects, but DD 11 wanted to do more than read about science. So back to the drawing board. I read every post I could find about science and want to thank those that posted on this subject. I settled on . . . drumroll please . . . Chemistry - The Elements and Carbon Chemistry by Ellen McHenry/Tiner Biology - Real Science 4 Kids/Tiner Physics - Real Science 4 Kids/Tiner/Math & Science Wildridge Educational software Now the hunt is on again for Real Science 4 Kids and Carbon Chemistry by Ellen McHenry. My apologies to those who originally contacted me with RS4K to sell. Thanks for your help, Dina ETA: I was blessed to purchase the combined teacher's manual and all of biology and physics from a hive member! I still need Carbon Chemistry!

THANKS -- I appreciate your feedback and now have it figured out! Hello~ Unfortunately we are behind in science and need to get back on track. So as you can see from all the questions, I really need some help! Quick background: DD is 11, only had Apologia Astronomy (last year & loved) and some science readers Abeka 2nd. Watches Nova faithfully. 1) What do you think is a better combination and WHY??? McHenry's The Elements with Carbon Chemistry McHenry's The Elements with Elemental Science McHenry's The Elements with RS4K 2) Is Elemental Science meaty enough for this age? 3) Please name the best Physics program for this age. 4) Please name the best Biology program for this age. A thousand thanks no, make that a million. Dina:001_smile:

Hello! I have read the prior posts about Ellen McHenry's The Elements and Carbon Chemistry but was wondering if she has the children complete a lab sheet for the experiements. Also, how long does it take to complete Carbon Chemistry? Thanks! Dina :001_smile:

Thank you for your advice. I really appreciate it! Dina :001_smile: -
Hello ~ I just posted yesterday about the wonderful experience I had purchasing from this board; then, my second item purchased from the board arrived in the mail. I was extremely disappointed. The item had been listed in excellent condition but in truth was far from. The book had ripped pages that had been taped, the cornrers of the book were curled up and tattered, it was clearly worn. I didn't pay a great deal for it, but it bothers me that it was listed as excellent when it would be considered acceptable by Ebay standards. What would you do? Should I contact the seller or just chalk it up to experience? Thanks, Dina :001_smile:

Hello ~ Praise God!!! Let's do a Happy Dance  So very happy for you. Dina :001_smile: -
Dear Molly, I am new to the board, but the little I've read doesn't indicate a whimp in any way. From what I can see you are a loving, kind, beautiful, and strong women who is just tired out from a very difficult situation. I will be praying for healing, strength, and hope. PLEASE remember, things are always darkest right before the dawn; you are not alone, HE feels your pain. :grouphug: Next year at this time we are going to be saying "remember Molly's post . . . wow, look at her now" and we will all be doing a happy dance! Best Wishes and God Bless you, Dina
