  1. Thanks ladies! Due to the funky spring schedule for PreCal II (trig) he will be taking it as a double paced 4th quarter class. I hate that but that will give him the 3rd quarter to review again. We bought the Math Lab kit and have not cracked it open and will probably do that for review.....and just carry on to PreCal II in March and get it knocked out. Many thanks about the Biology math information. He's planning on pre-med for sure, not even a question about that, but is not absolutely sure he will be a biology major ~ but very possibly. His A&P instructor taught at a local medical school and for some mysterious reason, is starting teaching adjunct at the community college which is just down the road (?) She has advised him to major in something he really wants to learn besides biology (but take the required classes for the MSET), because medical school is long and hard and he won't get another opportunity to learn other things after that. That is a subject for a whole new thread (undergraduate majors for pre-med students ~ biology or other?). Again, many thanks ~ Debbie
  2. Yes, it's also one semester = a whole year's HS credit here as well. I'm mostly concerned with content and not credits though, if I'm making sense at all. He is taking Anatomy and Physiology (for science majors) and is the top student in the class (and one of the top students she has ever had), so I don't know that DE is overwhelming him as much as his sheer dislike for math.
  3. DS is taking PreCal I this semester at community college (DE). My understanding from the catalog is that PreCal I is basically College Algebra + and PreCal II (second semester) is Trig. So, here lies the question and dilemma ~ DS will likely make a high C unless he pulls a low B by some miracle in PreCal I this semester. He has not been diligent at all in keeping up with homework assignments and seemed surprised when he failed (58) test 2 of 4 this semester :glare: when he walked in and took the test cold turkey and had not done ANY homework for three weeks. (He made an 82 on the one he actually half way prepared for). So, we are wondering if we should continue on with PreCal 2 (trig) in spring. Let me mention that DS is almost exclusively an A student....except math. He really dislikes it. Geometry (in public school) was extremely painful for him. Our umbrella and local school district both count a one semester course of college PreCal as a full high school credit and they both tell me he can count PreCal 1 as high school precal. Really? :001_huh: It seems to me that a typical high school precal course includes trig and he would be getting shorted some math education if I tried to do that. Not being a math person (who has a BFA that required NO college math at all) I would not know. And I'm not one to cut corners. In the bigger scheme of things, he will likely be a biology major and may need nothing beyond precal except maybe statistics (so I'm told). Your thoughts ~ :bigear: Debbie
  4. Sue ~ DS improved by 37 points from 10th to 11th without doing anything to prepare at all. Just walked in cold turkey and took it. I think just the additional year of english and math made the difference for him.
  5. We got ours in the mail today ~ 221. Being our oldest child and new to this, I guess that's a great score!

  7. Ditto ~ we have a good friend who is hoping to attend Rose-Hullman next fall. My husband is an engineer and knows from the business that really great engineers come out of there.
  8. Another idea is to read one or two issues of each college's newspaper (generally available on line). I could not agree witn you more about that! We have been picking up the college newspapers from our visits and it allows you to get a completely different view of the school (some good, some not so favorable) from the inside. One school we recently went to that DS loved, he picked up the paper after the Preview Weekend we attended, and was completely turned off by the school by some of the things he read in there (things we had heard about, but to see it in print is another story). Thanks for the suggestions of the books. I am popping over to Amazon and loading up my cart :)
  9. DS is a junior this year and we have already started the previews at colleges that we may be interested in. One school admissions officer already warned me to be careful of how many duel-enrollment credits we end up with, because at their school (and some others), anything over 30 hours and he will not be elligible for incoming freshman merit scholarships, since he will be classified as a sophomore. Presently, he'll have 28 credits coming into college (for the colleges that accept them....some of them don't) but he was planning on taking 2 more classes which will push him up over 30 hours. Assuming I have to submit his community college transcript and can't hide any of the hours...... ?? Have any of you guys run into this? Unfortunately, one of the colleges he is very interested is the college referred to above. Many thanks ~ Debbie
  10. We were there for a football game and dropped by to see the campus (we are planning to attend a open house soon) and connect with several students we know that attend there. We did not talk to anyone on staff. I can not tell you really anything about the school, but DS was distraught over how plain the campus was. I grew up in TX, so flat and plain was nothing new to me. But we had just been to Sewanee a few weeks before......hard to even compare strictly on an aesthetic level :) He felt like he just could NOT go to Union based on the outside campus! So, Covenant is looking better than ever now! Anyway ~ nothing really to tell you about Union. Just our short experience there yesterday :) and wondering if campus beauty should really be one of the criteria for choosing a campus (?)

  12. Why do YOU want to continue homeschooling....seriously!? What reservations do you have about going to the CS? Have you been really specific about your reasons with your mom (and yourself)?
  13. I would check the NWS for Weather Spotting classes. He is underage to be "official" but can still take the course. That is one of the "projects" my physical science students can do for the year.
  14. So, I hate to ask this since I don't have the 3rd edition book. What does SWB recommend now for US History? I bought the first and second edition and passed on buying the third to prevent looking like a book trilogy on my shelf :)
  15. The options are: One semester of Intro to Physics - no lab. They use Hewitt's Conceptual Physics and my husband I thought we would add the labs (he's a mechanial engineer and you can actually buy the kit) to make it a "lab science" for high school. We are not concerned about college credit down the road for this. The other option is algebra/trig based Physics I and II - a full year, two courses of physics with labs. Obviously this would count as high school credit as well. Since he's taking Pre-Cal this year, he was going to take A&P (no math pre-reqs) and then take this physics course his senior year after he finishes Pre-Cal to meet the pre-reqs for that. But then I worry about ACT/SAT testing....if it matters about having Physics first. (?) I guess my real question is: if the one semester Conceptual Physics really equivalent to a high school physics course? I really don't know! Many thanks ~ Debbie in Nashville
  16. How much material is covered is the key factor here.....so if it's 1710 Pre-Cal I and 1720 Precal II....we'll just count 1 high school credit. Same would go for A&P ~ So, this leads me to question two: Physics. I'll post on a new line to make it clear.....thanks ladies!

I'm sure this has been discussed on the board somewhere before, but I have just spent an hour searching for it and cannot hit the tag words correctly to find what I need SO: I have contacted two different umbrella programs here in TN and they tell me different things about how many credits are awarded for a college class. One said that each 3-4 hour college course is worth one high school credit (one year of high school). Another said that a 3-4 college course (one semester) is worth .5 (one semester) of high school credit...in other words....one semester = one semester. How do you guys determine this. DS is taking Pre-Cal I (College Algebra +) and Pre-Cal II next year as well as A&P I and A&PII. Each class alone is not a complete course, so he will have to take two semester to "finish" the course. For example, A&P I covers half of the systems, and A&P II covers the other half. Thoughts? TIA, Debbie in Nashville
  18. Something that teaches history in a solid chronological sequence and teaches important events.. We did VP history all through the earlier years and have finished four years of VP Omnibus. Omnibus does not review the chronological sequence of the flow of events; so make sure you use something solid for prior years, because you won't get it in Omnibus. Omnibus has its strengths, but historical flow of events is not one of them.

Somewhere I heard/read that effective in 2007/2008 school year, that though a students may sit for the AP exam, they may not put "AP" on their transcript unless the student has been in an AP approved course. Homeschoolers can submnit lesson plans/syllabus and get approved in order to count the AP. Did I misunderstand and the above is not correct?
  20. I noticed on the book list for the on-line class (Omnibus III)that the Bob Jones US History, high school textbook in paperback, is a required textbook. Do you/did you (your child) actually use this book? If so, did you choose to use it and you, the parent, assign the reading or did the instructor assign readings from the book as they read through Omnibus? Many thanks, Debbie
  21. Having emailed the admissions office of a Tier 1 school that we may be applying to (DS is a sophomore) about homeschool applications, here is a portion (relavent to your question) that I received from them:
  22. We homeschooled from 3rd-7th. He went to a private Christian school for 8th (that only went through 8th grade). He was accepted at the academic high school magnet for 9th grade (PS) and he came home this year for 10th and will stay home until graduation. Not sure what info you are looking for ~ Debbie

Having owned 1st and 2nd edition, sent ds off to school later, sold the books, and now we are home again this year, and I'm planning our 11th adn 12th grade year.......I'm wondering about what is recommended that is new for the 3rd edition? I did read that the US History recommended text is America: A Narrative History was recommended which we were looking at anyway. What about lit and govenment. I think we are ok on everything else.   24. I hope they are done BEFORE school starts. Omnibus IV was a pain to read on line or print for half the year!
