  1. Does anyone know when Omnibus V and VI will be completed? I cannot find any indication on there website. Thanks!
  2. I have looked at the Verita Press website several times and am unable to see any notes about the completion of the series. Have they indicated when Omnibus V and VI will be completed? Thanks!
  3. We have been in a public school based Cub Scout Pack for 4 years. During this time I have been the Den Leader of my son's den. The pack meets at a church. I believe Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts function in the same structure. A church may hold the charter for the group meeting there but frequently that is the only affiliation they have together. In our pack, we have all walks of life present from Muslims to evangelical Christians. Our charter is held by a presbytarian church. Our pack does do nice things for the church (i.e. plant flowerbeds, etc) but that is for the privilidge of allowing us to use their facility free of charge. Now in answer to the public school aspect... In my experience (which is limited to our pack), things were fine when ds was a tiger (first grade) but things have gotten challenging as the years have advanced. The boys have just completed 4th grade. There is a definate difference in the "worldly" knowledge of the public schoolers and the home schoolers. There was not in the beginning but each year you could see the difference increase. Also, the lack of parenting (I am not saying that all public school parents are lax but my den parents are) is taking it's toll. The boys will mouth back, swear, and just be cruel. I frequently see the exact ill behavior of the boys in the parents. I would suggest visiting a few troops. See how the leadership is. I would not worry about it being a church or school organization. Actually one benefit of having it outside a public building (i.e. a school) is that usually they give you a place to store some stuff. Hope this helps... Kathy
  4. I am basically a lurker on this site and would like to add my two cents. In regards to families homeschooling and not being able to get to schooling, I think (and this is just a loose observation) that families in their second year or so often seem to loose track of their original priorities. They seem to get caught up in the tons of activities and field trips available to homeschoolers and just run out of time. I think this happens in the second year because you think you have gotten the "school" part down and think you need to join everything and anything. Schoolwork gets pushed to the backburner. I can completely empathise with these families. We got distracted one year with so many activities, school became an afterthought. I gently suggest that they write down their goals for what they want to accomplish. If goals and objectives are written down (no matter how simple), it is easier to look at your goal list and decline activities and classes that do not meet them. I think it helps keep you focused on the long term goal and not get sidetracked. I also try to support them in their efforts to decline leading and participating in activities. It seems a lot of folks feel guilty because they are not doing every single thing in their coop/church/scouting lives. Learning how to say no is sometimes a challenge. Just my two cents...
  5. Hi! I am a single mom who homeschools a ds who is 10 and have since after kindergarten. My son is a "young" 10 year old both mentally and physically. My question is...when do you tackle sexual education? I am definately a coward in regards to this topic! Having been a nurse for 18 years, my son definately has a thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Part of me is tempted to tackle the topic in such a manner that it is so above his head that I can check it off my "to do" list and yet never have to explain a thing other than every technical term (lol). Has anyone had to deal with this? At what age? Are there any age appropriate books that have been useful? I am under a deadline of summer 2009 because we go to Cub Scouts and will be transitioning to Boy Scouts. I do not want him to go away to camp with the public school boys and be informed of this (via the other kids). One last note, his Dad is not in our lives. While that may sound unfortunate, it is actually better for us. So Dad explaining these things is not an option. I apreciate any input.
  6. Regena- I would love to see what you have. I have been a lurker for years but I have never posted. According to the user control panel, my email is correct. If not, let me know. Thanks, Kathy
  7. Has anyone used the WTM format for science in the logic stage? I have started a rudimentary outline of topis but keep getting bogged down with the little details. I prefer to have heavy reading versus heavy writing. I have looked at the samples of Noeo science but thought after I tweak the whole thing to fit my ds needs, why not just start from scratch.
