  1. We are a Catholic family with many LGBTQ members. We also use Kolbe, with online classes. The only issue we've had was in Theology classes, where one teacher was very strict in his approach to dogma. Catholics come in many variations, just look at Pope Benedict and Pope Francis. Totally different approaches to the same dogma. So yes, one Theology course didn't work out for us. The rest has been fine. The science classes and curriculum they use are totally secular. In Biology, one reading was assigned over Christmas vacation, and one class was spent discussing it (It was about evolution, and the separation between science and theology). If you're not taking the online classes, you just don't assign that reading. Ok, there was also one joke in online Geometry about the shape of Jesus's cross - it was funny but I can't even remember it. Doh. Definitely not indoctrination :) There is no YEC, no mention of God/whatever in Kolbe's curriculum, unless specifically stated and in an outside resource. The books are all secular from mainstream publishers - no homeschool publishers. My eldest entered university last fall, in a place known to reject YEC, and homeschoolers who used YEC curricula. Now, in the online classes, my kids have been exposed to other kids believing in YE, and anti-LGBT propaganda. But it comes from the kids, not the teachers. But as you don't seem to be considering the online classes, then it's a non-issue for you.
  2. No designation means you choose your own curriculum. K means you follow their standard curriculum, and present their exams as proof of work. H is their Honors track, and you need to present more specific things for their evaluation. T is transfer from a recognized entity (they recognised Lukeion and PA Homeschoolers for us) OK and OH mean the online classes - regular or honor and AP is well, AP.
  3. Thanks, I've passed all those great suggestions to the marketing/sales team.
  4. Not sure what your question is? There's plenty of work and reading and assignments and quizzes in every course. Kolbe is run like a school and not a homeschool extension , and that's my major pet peeve with them. You can't slow down. If your child misses too much they can kick your kid out of the class. I totally hate that aspect as my last child is often sick. But the classes are rigorous and most teachers are great!
  5. Homeschool buyers co-op was already on my list. Nice to know I'm not so disconnected. I'll look at Rainbow Resource, which I had forgotten about. And the product is not available yet so there's no link to be shared. I wouldn't use the forums here for free publicity anyway
  6. I've been coming here for years (check my post count, not the highest but far from being a newbie) Well, now I have a child in college, and my youngest almost there, so I started working. My company has written a curriculum that would be of interest to homeschoolers interested in technology (robotics, programming). Not anything that comes in conflict with any of Peace Hill Press products. :) However, I haven't had the need to look into homeschool materials in many years, and I no longer know how to advertise the product. I am intentionally NOT referring to said product here, so this post is not an advertisement. It's really a request to be pointed in the right direction to places where I can advertise! So if you're looking for some technology related homeschool material, where do you look? CleoQc
  7. Be aware that those classes are distinctly Catholic. Not a big deal in math class, just an opening prayer but there were some assignments in writing class that were religious in nature. One or two, not a huge quantity but you may or may not feel okay with that
  8. My youngest took both of these classes. As a parent I loved the math class! (come to think of it she didn't take the algebra 1 class. She started with Geometry and is now doing Algebra 2) I've been very very happy with those math classes! My kid used to cry during math classes with mom and now she's actually getting math! The English writing class, I can't talk about too much. I was very hands off and didn't pay much attention to it. (I was working at the time) It was okay at the very least
  9. I'd say Latin 3 is probably the most demanding year. But this view of mine might be tainted by the fact child#1 was also taking Greek and Roman history the same year. But boy did we discuss Lukeion stuff that year!
  10. Be patient! For my eldest, we only learned of acceptance by July 25th! Two university applications, both of them answered at the end of July! So we had about a month to prepare. I envy those who get their acceptance right away
  11. It's with regrets that I have to withdraw my name from the list. After talking to the head of the department, and then being "tossed around", the university just doesn't know what to do with me. I'm too strong to start from the beginning (they said that after evaluating me), but they won't set aside the prerequisites for the more advanced classes. So my file was passed on to the graduate department, but I missed those deadlines for January. And they won't set aside that rule either. Plus I don't want a Masters, I just want some refresher courses. So let this list here be for our kids and let's celebrate their accomplishments!!!
  12. Yes indeed, faculty of engineering refers to the school of engineering. But Sue, you're not the first one who assumes I'm going as a teacher. When I mentioned it in the programmers group I attend that I was going to Concordia in January, they all asked which course I'd be teaching ! :) Oh, the power of grey hair...
  13. Not too sure if this is allowed or not... *I* am going back to university!!! Concordia University in Montreal, Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science. I meet with a counselor next week, and I start in January 2016
  14. FANTASTIC!!!! It's so hard to believe the end of the road is here... My own is now in college...Btw, what were your son's SAT scores??? My kid had great scores on the SAT and it still took FOREVER to get any answers... I'm thrilled for you that the scores worked to open doors. We just didn't see the same happening here.
  15. Latest news: a full year of credits awarded due to APs. Now dealing with a year 1 student instead of a year 0! (locally, our university degrees are 3 years instead of 4, but that's because we have two years of cegep - more or less community college, after high school. High school ends in grade 11, then 2 years of Cegep, and 3 years of university US is grade 12 (one extra year), and 4 years of university (one extra year). Those extra years got moved to cegep. Americans coming here have to register in year 0. Local students start in year 1. Long story short, I managed somehow to bring my kid to the end of cegep! Woohoo me! ;)
  16. Child #1 - Concordia U and McGill. Took a long time, but never waitlisted. Just a long process. I guess submitting 29 pages of portfolio didn't help the process ;-)
  17. One in college by now! One to go

  18. so to finish the saga: Offers from Concordia University and McGill University. No financial aid but who cares. It's less than 4K a year. All three faculties where applications were made said yes. The final choice is McGill in Biology
  19. Thanks for waiting for me, Laura. The wait was worth it!
  20. ooh, wow. thanks! I will still be around. I still have one kid at home. 2 or 3 more years to go (depending on which way she goes)
  21. I'll probably be the last to announce good news on this thread. Talk about stress!
  22. choice #1 said yes! Notoriously hard to get into faculty, known to frown upon homeschoolers (mostly because of the lack of real lab experience) , offered acceptance with no conditions! Woohoo! I'm over the moon!
  23. we're still waiting from number 1 choice. It's a good thing both unis are in our city and there's no moving out as classes start in about 6 weeks. Yikes! Child #1 had a huge smile and went back to videogames. Sigh
  24. we're still waiting from number 1 choice. It's a good thing both unis are in our city and there's no moving out as classes start in about 6 weeks. Yikes! Child #1 had a huge smile and went back to videogames. Sigh
  25. backup University said yes! Neuroscience and anthropology
