  1. It will be a mix of virtual labs (that come with the book and publisher) and labs in the house. Or so I'm told.
  2. Argh.. I hacked their page to be able to create an account (one field was mandatory, but it was also invisible...) So now I have an account. I go to this page: http://www.hhmi.org/order-materials/short-films/your-inner-fish and there's no "order" button....
  3. I've asked the question. At first, it was virtual labs, and now that's been removed. Or maybe I imagined it. I'm curious too, as my eldest is a student in the class. *and* the university he's applying to will not accept virtual labs.
  4. Some precisions. This is mostly a secular class. (Evolution is taught as fact) However Kolbe is a Catholic school. Classes start with a prayer. And one section of the course is on a book called "Chance or Purpose" which is decidedly Catholic. But it's a small part of the overall class.
  5. Kolbe announced today that their Advanced Honours Biology class has received the green flag from College Board for the AP designation. http://kolbe.org/news/ap-biology-course/ YEAH! I'm a happy camper! PA homeschoolers didn't work for us, as my kid truly need direct interaction with a teacher, not asynchronous interaction. Here's the link to the class description http://kolbe.org/online-courses/course-offerings/2014-15-school-year/high-school/online-science-courses/wcs-bio-ap/ The class meets twice a week, for an hour each time. Monday and Thursday, 6h25 -7h25 pm Eastern time. (yea it's a bit late, but it allows the West Coast to take part) My son is taking this class btw.
  6. again, what's your goal? If you want to read about Evolution, pick up any secular Biology book, it will be in there. Evolution is at the heart of modern day Biology and cannot be dissociated. Unless you have a specific goal in mind, it's hard to help out.
  7. I wouldn't read Darwin as part of a science class. History, Literature, yes, but not science Evolution has, well, evolved so much since he first came up with the idea, that his book is no longer the proper reference for current understanding of evolution.
  8. Well, that's not very descriptive now... Is the student a French speaker and you want French French curriculum? or your student has absolutely zero knowledge of French and is starting French as a foreign language from the very begining? Or anywhere in between. We have families here that would fit either end of the spectrum I just described.
  9. Kiana is right. It's not religion that is turned away, but the lack of scientific rigor and valid scientific content. As someone mentioned a little higher up, evolution is at the core of Biological Sciences. It cannot be more central that what it is. You don't teach it, you're not teaching Biology. You're teaching some sort of fake science, but it's not Biology. An approach like Kolbe is fine The book is secular, entirely science approved (minus any error that is found in such books once in a while). The religious content is on the side.
  10. McGill university is one. I went to a presentation a few years ago, and it was mentioned there. It was even mentioned that they were thinking of removing any diploma from anyone having graduated in the Faculty of Science and found to take a Creationist stance. To be fair, they also said it was highly unlikely that they'd be able to do that. (and they don't so far). I know of at least 3 homeschoolers who were turned away because of Apologia, one just this year. This only applies to the faculty of science. Engineering, Medecine, and everything else is not affected.
  11. Some universities will turn away students just for having used Apologia. Not all, but some. The one my kids will most likely attend is one. You list Apologia as one of your books, and you're out. This university is really, really, careful about young Earth Creationists in their science faculty. Young Earth is junk science, no way around it.
  12. Definitely what level and what age? If the child is fluent, CNED might be appropriate. French curriculum from France, free on the net. Heavy in literature especially in the last few years of high school. My kids follow those
  13. and now this makes me realize that next summer it's us. Laura has always been one year ahead of me, and I've followed her since we both started. ARGH! Now it's my turn to go berserk!!! This year is it!!!! Laura and Calvin did it, so can we... (ok, we're not even considering Oxford, but it's still nerve racking)
  14. 5 in Physics B this year, after struggling all year long with PA Homeschoolers. While everyone is extremely happy with the results, we've now learned that DS needs and depends on a live class. Physics with PA Homeschoolers is not live. And that made our year very hard. Still, can't ask for better results!
  15. Just so you know, Kolbe is adding a Calculus class this year. More interaction and accountability than DO or PA Homeschoolers. http://kolbe.org/online-courses/course-offerings/2014-15-school-year/high-school/online-math-courses/wcm-calc/ Twice weekly online video meetings. Firm deadlines. So quite the opposite of Derek Owens. I just love that there's something for everyone. Kolbe is a Catholic school, but apart from an opening prayer, there's no religion in their math classes.
  16. Voltaire's Candide is usually appreciated by teens. Funny read, but at the same time, a harsh study of French society. Alexandre Dumas père: Le comte de Monte Cristo (and many others) Alexandre Dumas fils: La dame aux camélias Paul Féval: Le bossu Edmond Rostand: Cyrano de Bergerac Stendhal: Le rouge et le noir
  17. inactive in Canada... Got my license while I was in college. Like many others, I've switched to the Internet. Local hams are still active in case of emergencies. A few years ago, we had a big ice storm, and some regions were without electricity for over a month. Hams worked with police and army to provide communications.
  18. No language at all, it seems I hope it won't be Scheme. And I'd prefer Python over Java. My son passed this exam last year, and CollegeBoard LOST his copy. So he doesn't have his results, and it would have been an easy 5. Sigh...
  19. You know, I do understand the question, but the way it's phrased does look a tad weird in the high school forum ;-)
  20. I think homework is counted too. At least it is where I live.
  21. khan academy has an app for cellphones, both android and iOS.
