  1. Well the fear was the house would burn down, but then a week ago we did have a fire. So that is what I am wondering how we deal with. His feelings/fears/concerns/regressions/etc since the fire we actually had.
  2. My SN son used to have this weird, irrational fear of our house burning down during the night. He used to get himself worked up into a complete panic attack over it. Well, last Sunday (fathers day) we actually did have a house fire. Now, he is SUPER clingy, and starting to revert back to baby talk (kinda, its like a mix between 'big kid' talk and baby talk) What on Earth can I do to help him through this? I am completely lost. Any sense of normalcy is gone right now. We are living in a motel room and its just a mess right now. Any ideas?
  3. We are YEC so I would like something that isn't SOOO full of evolution. I know that may be hard but there has to be something good out there. Any and all topics for Space Earth Science (weather, oceans, water cycle, archaelolgy, caves, fossile, geology, space... etc, etc) Thanks!
  4. I use Developmental Math with my 2nd grader. It is a great program for kids who need it. This may be the book your son needs. It is self teaching if you choose to use it that way. I personally don't, but my son has more issues that just 1 topic he is stuck on. Check it out. Not sure what book it would be, however, because my son is only beginning book 4.
  5. The upper level first version books were behind. They have since upgraded (v2.0) and I see nothing behind nor does anybody else I know. Teaching Textbooks is awesome. My kids do AMAZING with testing and understanding of math using it.
  6. We use the living books suggestions on this page (they recommend Apologia OR the living book titles) I add extra research, projects, or writing assingments. Depends on what we have in the house or what I feel like lol.
  7. Thank you so much! You all will make a very happy teenager ehen I tell her and put my mind at ease. I know she likes Fred because we have used it (and are using Beginning Algebra this year) for a few years. I just wasn't sure about dropping our other math to do this alone (I am not strong enough in math to evalutate that myself either, unfortuntely)
  8. Would you consider the Advanced Algebra enough to be a stand alone curriculum if we used all 3 books? (the textbook, home companion and zillions of problems book) My daugther wants to use that alone next year but I am hesitant. Thoughts? Another question- does LOF Geometry include proofs?
  9. I am not on here much but I wanted to pop in tonight to check in :) Ds is starting to finally make progress. He is slowly (sloooowly) starting to read. If I had to place a level on him I would guess end of 1st grade which is HUGE for him :) He is starting to understand math and is nearing the end of Developmental Math 3. After that, we will take a break before getting into DM 4 and do a time and money workbook I have (and lots of hands on of course!) He is starting to write better. Know what made him want to write? He has a pen pal :) He tells me what he wants to say and I explain any grammar concepts that are needed and I write down his words. He copies them. His printing is getting neat!! He still has a long way to come but he is getting there! Compared to a year ago he has made HUGE progress! So, how are all of you??
  10. I am looking for all topics within Space and Earth science. I need recommendations for grammar stage (I will have a 2nd and 3rd grader) and logic stage resources (for a 6th grader) Thanks!
  11. My son that struggles does have LD's. He has HFA, he is dyslexic, he has numerous other issues that may not be directely related to his reading struggles. He is getting it just at a slower pace. I am not doing much intervention-- he is reading just a bit below his brother. Compared to a year ago that is fantastic because be barely knew his letter sounds a year ago. I do, however, think it has to do with the specific child and the severity of LD's. This is a hard topic because there are mild LD's and there are extreme LD's. He is in OT, we do Reading Pathways and we will start using Dianne Crafts Brain Integration therapy book once I order it (once I have the $ to) but he is getting there with working on it. His working on it probably looks different than a child with no LD's though. All that said, I have no doubt he will read when he is ready. (I am not arguing, I hope you know that :) I am strictly going based on my son. 100 kids with the same LD will probably learn a 100 different ways, ya know? :) )
  12. My 2 oldest do Teaching Textbooks and love it. If your kids are 'behind'-- it isn't a big deal. Get them going where they are and go from there. You may be surprised! If they are ahead, start them where they are and go from there. I don't find TT itself to be behind at all. Not sure why it has such a bad reputation on these boards. Everywhere else you see GLOWING reviews of it. With 10 kids in school that would be a LOT of math to teach. Teaching Textbooks would save you a LOT of time. It is expensive (unless you find a great price used) but it is reusable (books are NOT necessary-- we have not used them once) and they hold their resell value.
  13. I am probably very different than most but I wouldn't worry. My 1st grader is 6 (turns 7 next week) and he reads ok. Not great but not bad. He is still learning and struggles at times. He is working through Sonlight 1st grade readers. My 8 year old *really* struggles to read. I used to panic but he will read when he is ready. My now 5th grader I am pretty certain came out of the womb reading. They all have strengths and weaknesses. Just practice, practice, practice but be patient. He will read when he is ready. Don't push or he will push back. One of the wonderful things about homeschooling is we are not bound by public school standards. My kids are all over the grid. My oldest HATES math. She is doing well but it is not easy at all for her. If you tested her knowledge of history she would probably score well into college years (think-- junior or senior even) She is a history NUT! Loves it. Devours is. I am going to say it-- she is a history nerd <3 Just give him time. He will read when he is ready :)
  14. My 6th grader will be using Math- Teaching Textbooks 7 and Life of Fred Physics the possibly start LOF Pre-A book 1 if she gets it. English- I am not sure if we will continue with Rod and Staff or move to the Queens Homeschool materials. That will be decided later I suppose but it will be one of those. IEW Geography Based writing lessons and Writing With Skill 1 I think. (not all at the same time of course) Unless I like and stick with the IEW literature based books. Literature-- This will be a good mix of history, science, and I will use Figuratively Speaking to make a curriculum for this (using books to point out the literary language being studied) I am also going to do something for poetry but I haven't looked that far yet. We will continue with Vocabulary Cartoons. I have all 3 books so not sure where we will be at that time. Spelling with CLP Spelling. History- Diana Warings Romans, Reformers, and Revolutionaries plus living books and documentaries and whatever else I find to add to this. Science- Parables From Nature (Discovering Nature Series) and living books on Space and Earth science thrown in there. I haven't decided on what ones yet for that. Getting Started with Spanish
  15. We use the new version (2.0) and I don't see anything lacking. I think it's fine and am happy with it. My daughter did state testing and tested 'above average' which is the highest score you can get (I would have to dig her acutal numbers up but they were really high into the 'above average' category.)
  16. No this is the only one I didn't. I did call, however, and when you put it on your computer it automatically registers it, so they have the number thank goodness!
  17. This is for my 9th grader. So far all she has done so far is Getting Started with Spanish and is doing fantastic. She loves it (that is why we chose that to start with-- to get her feet wet and see if she likes it) So, what would you follow that up with? Thanks :)
  18. I have TT 5 that I am ready to sell and I have a buyer but-- I don't have the cardboard sleeve that the CD's came in. I threw it away because I put them in those hard plastic jewel cases. Well, now I realized that the serial number is on the disk sleeve. Is there a way to find that serial number so it can be installed on a new computer or did I basically shoot myself in the foot on this? So frustrated right now. I didn't even think of that when I got rid of it :/
  19. When you pray that God would put a stop to something if it is not His will and He so clearly does is a wonderful feeling!! I copied this from a facebook group because it is a lot to type. OH MY GOODNESS. So, I met with the most ______________ high school counselor. You may fill in the blank with your choice of word when I tell you what happened. So, we walk in and he asks what he can help us with. I explain to him what I wanted (to enroll dd for the remainder of the year). He says "You homeschool, correct" I say yes. He then proceeds to laugh (LAUGH) saying "couldn't handle teaching high school huh?" So, as I sit there completely dumbfounded by this guy he says "That is why we hire professionals" ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? So, I am trying to compose my thoughts in a semi respectful manner because when we were there I was shaking and near tears anyways because I had to do it in the first place. I looked at him and said "Actually no, it has to do with something completely non academic. Her grades thus far are 90% or higher in all subjects" (because I don't allow less. If she gets less we go through the material again) and he says "Sure they are, well she won't be able to start until Jan 21 because that is semester break and we need to leave room for kids moving into the school district". We live VERY rurally. The entire school district has 1 elementary school and a building that is half middle school and half high school. Last years graduating class had 57 students (a 16 year high mind you) Their buildings are HUGE. I highly doubt overcrowding is an issue here) I was polite (frankly because I was completely dumbfounded by the idiocy of this guy) I think I will make things work with her at home. I am not giving her to that idiot. I am planning to email him when I am not so irritated by his... whatever you want to call it. He stood up and smirked when we left and extended his hand to shake mine when I left. I got up and completely ignored it. Jerk. I just got back from a Veterans Day program she is part of with the school (because she is in the band) and he saw me, smirked and IMMEDIATELY started whispering to the principal who then looked right at me and did a fake half smile. I am SO freaking mad (pardon my language please) SO irritated. When we left dd says "I am proud of you, you didn't smack him" LOL! So, she will be staying home and we will make it work :001_smile:
