  1. My husband has this, and after testing at the optometrist, found out he has some kind of divergence focusing issue - sorry, not the exact name, but close ;). You know that test where they have you focus on an object as you move it closer? It turns out one of his eyes was flaking out quite a few inches from his nose (which caused the strain, which caused the twitching, etc). They prescribed a computer-based therapy program to help with the focusing. He's been doing it for a month now and has noticed the twitching and headaches are occurring less. Sooooo the whole point of my long post is, if it's really bothering you and it's lasting for a while, you might want to have the optometrist check it out.
  2. I'm the resume go-to-girl for my friends. A couple of quick tips - - Make sure it's nicely formatted and has plenty of white space. Look through a couple of samples online until you find one that suits you - Start off bullets with action verbs ("Managed three major projects, Supported Windows computers") - Use quantifiable numbers, if possible ("Increased production 40% in three months") - Unless you've been in the field for more than 5 years, keep your resume to one page
  3. :iagree: with Kareni - explaining why you picked a particular book is a traditional inscription.
  4. I know the OP already decided what to do, but I'm just going to echo going for a lunch or breakfast item. I remember sandwich trays being nice. I still remember looking in the fridge one morning a day or so after my dad died. We must've had 5 gallons of orange juice, various assorted milk cartons, and tons of casseroles - but nothing for breakfast. :001_huh:
  5. I get allergy related pink eye every spring. Besides eye drops (I think I've used the ones teachaheart mentioned), a cold washcloth helps relieve the itching and burning. For a little guy, the hardest part may be getting him not to touch it - so an eye patch (feel like playing pirated for a while :) ) may help.
  6. I think the problem is they just need so much room - most sites seem to specify 18" apart in a row, and then 3-4 feet apart for each row. The roots (sweet potato) will only form where the vine touches the ground, so you'd need a big enough pot for the vine to spread out.
  7. We did a candy bar - mason jars / apothecary jars filled with our favorite candies, and little bags for the guests to fill up and bring home. Think it ended up being less than $1 per guest, but I spent hours finding the right bulk candy sites, lol. In my mind, if it's not edible or practical (like the bookmarks mentioned), it's probably a waste. But, if they don't want to do favors, don't! I doubt anyone will actually miss them..
  8. Yup, once a year for a combined physical/OB GYN with a pap smear. I have to do it for my meds, but I'd do it anyway. My insurance pays for an annual one as it's considered preventative care. IMHO, I've known too many people who had serious (and easily fixable) illnesses caught at their annual checkup to not get one.
  9. I typed up a big long post, and then the board ate it! Anyway, this might help: http://ipod.about.com/od/introductiontotheipod/a/just_got_ipod.htm Librivox is one site for free audiobooks, and Amazon also has a free Christmas mp3 every day until Christmas this month.
  10. This might help: http://ipod.about.com/od/introductiontotheipod/a/just_got_ipod.htm iTunes is basically the software that puts the music from your computer on to the iPod. For free audiobooks, http://librivox.org/ has some read by volunteers. Also, for Christmas music, Amazon has free MP3s for Christmas. Some of them are better than others :) .http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=dm_gw_25days?ie=UTF8&docId=1000453281&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=right-1&pf_rd_r=075BGH86YA9J36E66N2K&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=505692811&pf_rd_i=163856011 Hopefully that last link works!
  11. The biggest difference, I think, is in the book formats. The Sony Readers support EPUB, which currently seems to be the standard. Amazon mainly uses its own proprietary format (and doesn't support EPUB), though there are several places that offer free books formatted for it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Kindle#Content_sources). As for text-to-speech, Kindle offers it, but only on certain titles. It's pretty clunky - here's an example: I can't honestly imagine listening to that for the length of a book - give me a mediocre audio book over that any day! The biggest difference, imho, is that the Kindle 2 has a lot more features than what you're looking for. Here's an article with the comparison points: http://www.wired.com/reviews/product/giftguide_ebook On another note, there's rumors of an Apple ereader coming out in spring. But, of course, being Apple, it will probably be exactly what you need but hideously expensive :glare: Feel free to pm me if you have more questions about it - it's something I was seriously researching before deciding to stick with my Sony prs505 reader.
  12. What are the ages of your kids? Honestly, if they're young, a few months of non-stellar homeschooling won't hurt them in the long run. I think you've already gotten down to the crux of it - is it better to just say "oh well" and accept it as, say, an early summer vacation, or put them in school (with all the disruptions that causes)? Do you have a timeline for when your new house will be ready?
  13. We did that for my grandmother, who had dementia (pretty much, most of the time she thought I was my mother, and that it was the 70s). Since she wasn't able to attend my wedding due to her health, we gave her a digital picture frame with wedding photos and some other older photos that I'd scanned. It was definitely a success - the nurses laughed about it though, because Gram would start talking about the photos with them and then wanted them to sit down and watch the slideshow with her! The only caveat I would add is to maybe sit and go through a photo album with her first and see which ones are her favorites. My gram seemed confused by some of the photos (mostly ones from the wedding that didn't have family in them) and also her dementia seemed to bring up some old family grudges, so I ended up deleting all the pictures that had my half-siblings in them.
