Sounding board for thinking about next year?
SDMomof3 replied to Porridge's topic in Accelerated Learner Board
I would say that Intermediate NT definitely lives up to the reputation. It is a step up from the other Intermediate classes. NT took double the time of the other Intermediate class. I never saw ds so frustrated as when he took NT. -

The order that my son took the classes were Intermediate Algebra, Pre-calc, Intermediate C&P, Intermediate NT, then Calculus. But he told me that Calculus was easier for him than Intermediate NT. NT was definitely the hardest class my son took. -

My Ds has taken all the AoPS Intro and Intermediate class except for Olympiad Geo. When he took the first Intermediate class it seem like a huge jump. I would have to say that my ds's workload more than doubled with the Intermediate classes. The writing problems took especially long. I would also suggest that your daughter take Intermediate C&P first then NT, C&P has a text book. We had to find a college text book for ds to use for NT. AoPS has no text book for NT class. -
AoPS is planning to keep their virtual academy, they will be expanding their course offerings in the virtual academy.

Math After AP Calculus (and Where?)

Absolutely agree. My son took AoPS Calculus in 6th grade and he is retaking it this year at the CC. -
To worry, or not to worry?

My DH and daughter both have ADHD and there are days that they will say that their brain is just not awake. Usually those are days that taking the meds help. DH will have days where he will just not do anything until the meds kick in because his brain is just dumb. It could be that your son is at the point where he need the medication. Dd didn't start ADHD meds until puberty hit, she was 14 (late bloomer), when she started having the brain blips. -
If they are on Zoom, there are virtual backgrounds. My dd uses a virtual background when she works. I also use the virtual background, we even made a game of it, like pick a place that you visited or wish to visit.

my dd had a remote software internship last summer and all the interns just wore plain t-shirts. I also work in software and the dress code for engineers is very causal. Many of our engineers wear jeans and t-shirts to work pre-covid. This is for California.

History/ Social Studies Recommendation

@Seaconquest, I think our sons go to same charter. My son M is in 7th grade. I just wanted to tell you that your son does not need AStar to do well in USACO. My dd's friend was an instructor at AStar and when I asked him about ds taking classes there he told us not to take them. AStar uses past USACO problems as homework, they just change the numbers and names. If your son makes an account on USACO he can look at the solutions that USACO gives out and they are very detailed. I saw that HackerRank was mentioned, my ds used that site when he was learning C++ and some of the algorithms. Your son should consider C++ or Java or the competitions. At the Bronze level it doesn't matter but at the higher levels most competitors use C++, it's faster. It appears that your son is taking a very heavy course load, I just wanted let you know that USACO is a big time suck. Good Luck

SDMomof3 replied to Calizzy's topic in The Chat Board
the most I drove was 1hr each way to my dd swim practice 5x per week. We found another family to carpool and it was such a relief. -

History/ Social Studies Recommendation for 8th grade
SDMomof3 posted a topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I am looking for a history/social studies recommendation for my son. He is a rising 8th grader. Ds is a math a stem kid. He will have a heavy course load next year, so I am hoping to find a low output history class or curriculum ideas. We are with a charter school, so I am looking for something secular. -
We use the Stock Market Game, it designed to teach kids about the market and investing https://www.stockmarketgame.org/

Do you ever say please or thank you to her?
SDMomof3 replied to Teaching3bears's topic in The Chat Board
When my son was younger, he would say things like "Alexa, please tell me a story" or "Goodnight Alexa, can you turn off my book. Thank you" -

Ds test at high school/college level for English but he is not interested in humanities. He will have a heavy course load next year, so I am hoping to find a low output history class or curriculum. My dd found out she had a learning disability in high school, when she started taking CC and AP classes. She is gifted and was able to compensate for the learning disability at the high school course level, but she was unable to compensate when the classes were CC and AP level. Your son's story sounds very similar to my dd.

AP geography or Computer Science Principles were recommend for my dd when she started 9th. They are considered easier and a intro to the course load.

My son takes both ELA and Math at the Academy. This is our third year, he likes the classes, the teachers have been wonderful. They did a great job switching to Zoom. There was more social interaction before Covid, my son's teacher encouraged the kids to friend each other on Alcumus and on the AoPS forums. We've met several students from different charter schools in our area.

Best 1st CC classes to try :-)
SDMomof3 replied to mlktwins's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
My son's charter school teacher suggested retaking a math course he took already for a gentle introduction to the CC grading format. But he is a younger student he took PreCalc with AoPS in 6th grade and took the course with the CC in 7th. It was a good strategy for a student who is not use to studying, he gained a lot of confidence. -
Any advice would be appreciated. I am trying to figure out what is the best choice for my 8th grader. He is a math and stem kid, so we are looking for a class that has a reasonable amount of work. He is an advanced reader, I like him to work on strengthening his writing skills before high school. X-posted

Can anyone tell me the difference between Magic Lens I vs Magic Lens II? I hear that the material repeats. I wanted to jump into ML II and skip ML I.
