  1. This could be a huge part of the issue. I know some people do not view community college as college. And many don't recognize that the trades are a huge part of many community colleges. There is also a weird pervasive belief that anyone can get an apprenticeship. It's not that easy. You don't just show up and say "I want an apprenticeship" and bam you have one. There is usually a wait. When I looked at one decades ago I had to test and was ranked based on multiple factors and that determined where I fell on the waiting list. Trades now require more than a knack for being a wrench monkey, some have blurred the lines with IT and require programming. HVAC was mentioned and to do HVAC requires knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and programming these days. I discovered this when I wanted to improve my system. I ended up being ok adding returns instead. The person who came out was technically HVAC, but had to know more than how to install a system. They needed to take measurements of the rooms, look at where the supplies and returns are, look at the airflow ect. Now I have upper and lower and they are programmed to open based on the settings on the thermostats, yes plural. We don't have a smart house or a smart thermostat, those do not do what we need. Our set up required someone who knew how to install the motors, run the low voltage wires, and hook them up and troubleshoot between multiple furnaces and thermostats, trouble shoot everything and and and the difference in comfort is amazing. I will work on some of the errors listed. It is Sunday which is harder for me so it may be tomorrow. I will get links as well to the national standards. Though if one steps back and really thinks about it, fulfilling the minimum standards for the state with the least requirements isn't a way to move up in a field or have any job security if/when that state or area increases requirements. This is not the same world we entered as young adults.
  2. I understand that. I just hate all the misinformation, and many things are not just regional even if they look it. It is a waste of your time to have to chase down possibilities that are suggested from outdated and incomplete information. I have done it for young adults and it is an exhausting path that isn't helped by people putting out ideas that don't reflect reality anywhere. The differences between states isn't as big as one assumes, there are national standards for so many of the things listed. For those that don't have national standards, give it time, someone (probably my child) somewhere will do a thing and then there will be national standards.
  3. I agree with you re her behavior. However she is not wrong about how many of the things mentioned here are not accurate. I have gone back and forth about if I should point out all the errors or not. I haven't because I am not up for the debate. So many of the things listed require more than high school education and many things attributed to a 2 year degree are now a 4 year degree. Some 2 year degrees or a certification with the understanding that the person in the field will need to continue their education for their career to keep up with technology changes. To anyone looking for a no college career path talk with Vocational Rehabilitation in your state. You will likely be offered a warehouse type job no matter potential. If you want to know what the pay is in your area go to your state to find out what the pay really is. It gives a more accurate, and often depressing, look at the pay. Or look at job ads, though when I went to pull some up I noticed many didn't include pay.
  4. For stucco I painted the basecoat and while it was still wet I sprinkled cheap sand over it. I let it dry and painted over it to get the tones I wanted. For brick. I am too lazy to cut individual bricks like I see so many doing. I bought polymer clay and 3D printed a brick texture rolling pin. Air-dry clay should work as well.
  5. Congratulations! You have entered into the world of miniatures. There is no turning back. I spent months on Facebook market place looking for one to make into a Halloween house, I finally found the perfect one at a thrift store for a few bucks that was mostly complete. Then while looking for people/skeletons to match the size I found a second one on Amazon for under $20. Now I have 2. I cannot wait until Halloween! I am debating 3D printing a hearse car body and putting it over a slotcar chassis and having it driving around, but the closest scale isn't cheap so I will likely just buy a cheap Christmas train set on clearance that looks like it will fit in and paint it for a Halloween train. I watch YouTubers who model railroad and who build stuff for Dungeons and Dragons and other miniature war games for painting tips and to learn how to make different things I want to add to my houses that I guess is more like a village now. Unless you are rich, don't buy the model paint, buy the small cans of house paint used for testing, way cheaper.
  6. I set up a table and covered it with a green table cloth for them to live on. Made it easy to sweep and hid any additional pieces or people. It's not uncommon to have a table with houses and people on it. The middle aged dudes my object to calling them "doll houses" and insist on "model trains" instead, but same concept.
  7. I want pepperment candy canes.
  8. Christmas was canceled due to people having covid. They claim to not know where or how they caught it. IMNSHO if they have no idea then they are behaving recklessly. We know how it is spread. We know what steps to take to mitigate risks. Rather hard to have compassion for all the inconsiderate jerks out there.
  9. More than likely yes, but it would look different and be suited to their needs. To be honest, I doubt we would just outright give the irresponsible one cash. If we bought them a home it likely wouldn't be a freestanding house because they wouldn't be able to maintain it. I wouldn't co-sign for them either and they couldn't get a mortgage on their own. It would be a huge headache and I am happy it is hypothetical only.
  10. Honestly? Some people live in squalor or near squalor and are ashamed. I don't know how common it is, but it is common enough. It's also not considered socially acceptable to live like that so people don't invite others.
  11. My adultlings run the extremes, one will likely buy a house before 25 with a sizable down-payment, if not outright. Another couldn't manage on a million dollars a year even if they had no living expenses. My view on my hypothetical retirement situation is that I would rather give my child money for a house than give it to the nursing home or to spend down for medicaid.
  12. For those I know who don't feel comfortable or able to entertaining at home they set things up outside of their home at places like a park, restruant, or community center. I recieve fewer invitations now than I did precovid, but then I haven't hosted since precovid. The list of people I trust to be taking precautions is very short. The list of people I trust who are also local is even shorter. I am not shy or quiet about my views of those who brush covid off and don't take precautions and I suspect that plays a part as well.
  13. Replying isn't attacking and I am confused why you feel I attacked you. Could you please provide a concrete example of what I said that constitutes an attack? I am also confused by your statement that I "flipped out." Please explain where in my replies you see me "flipping out?" You gave an example of why you didn't unload it and then went on about your living situation and other people, so I explained my living situation and the choices I have made to prioritize a clean kitchen and included examples of choices that other people make that reflect their priorities. I never included any judgement about your choices and am baffled by your words.
  14. Let me explain a bit more. You have 24 hours in a day. You choose to argue on here about how you have no control of the dishwasher and your home cleanliness. You could have unloaded the dishwasher in that time. You made a choice. Good for you! Stop defending and making excuses for your choice and just own it. Here like me I logged on here this morning and choose to reply. I could have choosen to go for a walk, play with my cat, play a game, or do any of the other numerous things I could be doing. It is a small thing, but it is a choice none the less.
  15. You made a choice to accept a living situation that doesn't prioritize cleanliness. Just own that. Stop making the choice to keep making excuses and own your are a active participant in your life and circumstances. You are making a choice.
  16. I brought ADHD in because as someone who has struggled with it and learned to over compensate on my own I find the frequent attitude to be "can't do something" to be frustrating since IME people with ADHD want to and can if theybhave the right tool chest. I found the view of "currently doesn't have a workable strategy and is struggling and suffering and needs tools" to be a more effective mindset. Especially as a parent when I see a child struggling with anything that seems like it should be easy, I know they want to be able to do it, they just haven't found a workable strategy. I understand chronic illness more than I want to. It's why I mentioned that my husband unloads in the morning. Resetting the kitchen each day is part of managing my health. I don’t always have the energy to clean the kitchen before cooking so the night time clean/reset saves spoons. Not the literal spoons mind you. If you are interested, this book was extremely helpful for me in learning to live and manage my chronic illness better. I attended a series of classes about it and it has been incredibly helpful. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1945188316/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1703266448&sr=8-25
  17. It is a choice not to sit down and have adult conversations about it and to come up with a workable solution for all. You are not a passive observer in your life, you can do something. You are making the choice not to. God did not give you housemates. You chose a living situation that involves housemates. Choices. Not god.
  18. I did not say it was easy. I said it was a choice. There are strategies and medications to help, not all willcwork for everyone but that is not an excuse to do nothing. I spent *decades* trying everything everyone said and being gaslighted about all the things I tried that didn't work. And I made the choice to keep on trying. It is a choice I make to set the alarms. It is a choice to create and follow routines. It is a choice to try something new. It is a choice to evaluate and to reevaluate. Every single day I make choices to do hard things and to use skills that are hard. Per my psychiatrist I over compensate, and by doing so my life is much better quality. It is a choice. ADHD isn't a life sentence to live in chaos. I am not saying it is easy, I am not saying it is fast, it is far from easy, but it can be managed. Managing it is a series of choices. And medications if appropriate. Love me the meds.
  19. Household of 7, all but one formally ADHD and that one is just old enough not to be dx. No spare utensils, see my forks thread, I still haven't bought any more. I did find plates in the room of the uncle staying with us, guess who isn't dx with adhd. I prioritize a clean kitchen, including dishes so I make sure it is run every night and unloaded and put away every morning. Just like I choose to wipe all surfaces, sweep and mop the floor. This is a choice I make every day when I choose to not hit the snooze button and instead get up and unload the dishwasher. Or when my husband doesn't hit the snooze button and gets up and unloads it before work. Everyone prioritizes things differently. Some people, who are not me, wake up at 3am to work out. Some people choose to sleep in until the last minute. Some people forgo a second income so they can homeschooling their children. Some people choose private school instead of public. These are choices that reflect what we prioritize. I prioritize my sanity and starting each day with a clean kitchen. I do this by closing the kitchen at a set time. If all teens and adults cleaned up after themselves and left the kitchen in exactly the same condition they found it, it wouldn't be a problem. They don't. And everyone manages just fine for the few hours every night that the kitchen is off limits. I have raised three into adulthood and no one has yet to starve to death because they couldn't cook and eat a gourmet meal consisting of pizza rolls, nachos, and rootbeer at 2am. Priorities.
  20. See, I don't see them turning the magnet around or even paying attention to it. The rule was empty the dishwasher if you are getting something out of it. Never happened. That is part of the reason for the closed kitchen. Either the husband or I empty it first thing in the morning to ensure it is done. That signals the kitchen is open. Not that anyone else is up at stupid o'clock in the morning.
  21. Weird. I assumed that since the bottom of the barrel non name brand dishwasher that is falling apart after a couple years (the bottom rack's pins have all broken off), needed duct tape to keep it from flooding (seriously) has lights that it would be standard. It is a brilliant feature. The word "clean" and a light that comes on next to it when It's clean.
  22. I think I have mentioned here in the past about kitchen hours and closing it after X time. That means after, say 10pm, the kitchen is off limits. My insanely cheap dishwasher that is falling apart has a delay start so if I am going to bed before it is closing time I add the pod, set the delay start and walk away. People can still stuff dishes in it, but it will start and be clean in the morning. I admit that I can be a dick when it comes to the kitchen because I clean the kitchen every night before relaxing. The rest of the house gets daily spot cleaning, the kitchen gets a nightly cleaning. Counters, stove, sink, sweeping, mopping. After closing time if someone is hungry they can go someplace still serving food, pay a mint for delivery or deal with poor planning and do without until breakfast. If I have to clean before I can make breakfast/caffeine heads will roll. This is my hill to die on.
