  1. If you are looking longingly at HOD, why are you waiting?

For a few reasons actually, first it's a big hunk of money. Second, I already have quite a bit of curricula I love, I just have to put it together into a daily plan.

I love the looks of HOD- the notebooking pages, daily assignments already written out for me, etc..but not sure I am ready to give up the freedom that comes with that. I have always planned and did our own thing- just having a grass is greener on the other side moment as the catalogs pour in. So I thought I would ask if when in high school you still planned yourself or if you let someone else do that for you.

  2. Well, I thought so too. I looked for reviews and samples. What I came up with is TOG is too involved and the books are dry, and no one likes core 300- the books are too dark and the spines stink. Nothing is tied together, it is sporadic and just yuck! Lol so looks like I will spend my summer devising my own program! Lol my first searches were too specific so didn't turn anything up, but then I just searched Sonlight and turned up a few reviews, and people wanting to know exactly what I asked. One lady asked, choose Sonlight, and regretted it very much. I wish I could link for you.

  3. I am considering doing 20th century history next year. I have used a few Sonlight cores in the elementary/jr high level, but never highschool. Well, core 100 is considered highschool, but we have used it for 8th. I have never used TOG, and it looks like so much information! I have graduated 1, and my others will be 11th grade (also doing dual credit at Community college) 9th and 7th. Part of me wants something new to use, the other part says just continue with what you've done, it works.

All that said can anyone compare these two and give me your thoughts on them? Have you used them? Time commitment for parent? Student?

    Thanks!

  4. I don't find THM complicated at all. I know several people who have lost quite a bit of weight in this- myself included. I don't make it over complicated like Pinterest, and I am not perfect on it- but as long as I stay on it more often than not, I usually lose. I find it easier than measuring things, counting points, etc... All things I have done before. I feel better than ever, and all my numbers ( from a health screening) are good. Just my thoughts.

  5. I am not a strong math teacher. For my son I choose Saxon, he did it with no complaints and did well. My artsy daughter needed another approach, she uses Life of Fred. I prefer Life of Fred, but admit that even though it seems to be going well- it scares me. It's a non traditional program and with a skill subject, but it seems to be working. I will test her in May with another placement test and see how she does.

  6. He does go into word problems and how to set them up in the pre-algebra books, but covers it again in Algebra since as mentioned they were added later. It gives more practice, which I like. I don't think you could really take the economics out of LOF with Economics, it's part of the teaching, part of the entire book. So if you don't think you would agree with his economic policies, skip the book.

  7. Yeah, I don't do anything, either. My kids aren't really crafty, and the effort of doing the activities never seems to equal the educational gain, or even the enjoyment, so we just don't do it. I think the only thing they ever really liked was when we burned down London out on the patio when we did SOTW book 2. But that was easy enough. Color the picture. Throw down a match. London, up in flames.

Our favorite was the Guy Foxx (not sure I am spelling his name right, but too lazy to get up and look) where we memorized the poem, made the doll and burned it!
